The tariffs are actually generating quite a bit of revenue. But they have also resulted in higher costs on a lot of consumer goods and damaged our trade relations.

Thanks. You can see the contradictions right there. The Treasury Secretary and Trump himself have said the tariffs will pay down the national debt. But even ignoring the fact that after Republicans extended the Trump tax cuts the chances of actually getting to a surplus are nonexistent, the tariffs can't be used to pay down anything if they're going to stimulus payments. If you assume the top 10% of earners wouldn't get these then paying $2,000 each to 90% of US citizens would cost somewhere around $550 billion while the figures I've seen for how much tariffs have brought in so far is less than $200 billion.
