That is fundamentally the difference between your country and ours. That isn't a "given" in the US.

The exception is if you are doing something that requires a license (driving, flying, boating, buying a controlled substance, etc.), then you need to be able to prove, when asked, you are who you say you are. Otherwise, you don't need to provide such identification.

Going to vote? Just provide your name at the polling place you are registered and they will look you up.
Getting arrested? Just provide your name and the police will look you up.
Getting medical attention? Just provide a name and healthcare provider and they will look you up.

That is why providing ID for something is considered such an egregious act in our country. There isn't a history of it being a requirement.
it's just like requiring a physical signature

random joe in receivables has no possible way to know if that signature was actually written by the right person or not, so what the fuck is the point of needing it
