I dont know about Canada, but parts of the southern US are like this as well.
everyone i know here in florida that's native to florida calls it soda, but if they want a certain variety "Coke" "Pepsi" or "Publix Cola".
But in restaurants, if you ask for Pepsi to drink and they have Coca Cola vendor, they'll say so. Fun watching people get huffy over Coke vs Pepsi. especially since I haven't drank a single soda in over a decade.
snowbirds and their kin call it pop usually.
