Finally saw it. I have the same gripes with it everyone else does. But man, that Rainbow Road scene was pure CINEMA. That alone was worth the price of admission. Loved all the action sequences, really.
I hope in the sequels (because we'll be getting a LOT based on the box office) that they are able to add more depth to the story and characters, but as a starting point, this worked. I really hope one of the sequels is a huge Mario Party tournament.
