The reviews are pouring in, and the consensus seems to be this is still an Illumination movie and they tricked you into forgetting that.

Could be site problems. I still see the number of reviews and the RT score. Just not the reviews and summaries themselves.

I would imagine a lot of people are curious about the RT score.

They made one decent movie, their first one.

It has been nothing but crap since then.

They are the joke of the CG animation industry, but since they made the Minions they have infinite money.

Illumination dont have a good track record for releasing great movies. Someone else can probably sum them up better, but outside of animation/visuals (which they usually do good on), their writing and storytelling are generally nowhere near as good and some are put off by it (partiucarly their humor). They have made a few enjoyable/decent movies IMO (though nothing spectacular), but nothing that I would strongly reccommend and half of their library is not worth watching.

Their best film is probably Despicible Me which was their first film back in 2010. They've been riding on its success since. They also notably made that Lorax movie which completely missed the point of the original source material's intentions.

Illumination make technically competent but otherwise mediocre animated films that appeal to kids and usually get huge box office takes. Audiences will probably like this just fine but it is not especially surprising to see a meh critical response.

In any case I felt like judging a Super Mario movie of all things based on critics is absolutely not what you should do. Audience matters way more here. I'd honestly be worried if critics agreed this was great, that half of them ish does sounds more promising.

Not that could ever be an amazing film, but it seemingly being a love letter to the franchise is the best it could ever be.

Audience is for sure going to be in the 80-100% range. They just want to see Mario say Wahoo and Bowser go Brrrr whilst having it all look pretty. And that's what they're gonna get.

Do they care if they get anything else worth actual substance? Of course not. Because Illumination doesn't do substance. They do money.

Also there isn't much substance to be had from a Mario movie, regardless of who's making it. Jack Black chewing the scenery as Bowser is going to be plenty good enough.

I dunno, I feel like I keep seeing that going around and just feel like it's an excuse not to even try.

Take Puss in Boots 2 for example. It's a sequel for a side character from a franchise that died off 10 years ago. It's cute and funny, visually gorgeous... but also had a ton of heart and real messages that people can relate to, as well as character growth.

And then seeing people just say... well that's not what Mario is. Mario should just be stomping... GOOMBAS and Bowser being Bowser.

Why can't we have both?

I'm just trying to understand the argument. Are people saying that there's absolutely no way possible for a Mario Movie to get 95%+ by both critics and audience? I just think that's a lazy way of thinking I guess.

I'm not saying it couldn't be better, but if you were hoping for that high of a score from a video game movie, you were always going to be disappointed.

Like sure, I'd love for them to take the story seriously, but Nintendo stopped caring about that after Super Paper Mario.

Unpopular opinion, apparently: I think critic reviews of animated movies, as an aggregate, tend to be pretty spot on, and I think they're going to be spot on for the Mario Movie

I would MUCH SOONER trust the critic reviews of the Mario Movie over the audience reviews, though I would sooner trust a friend's review of the reviews of a community I'm associated with like B8
