Dragon Quest feels weird to me. mostly because of how many redux/remixed/remade versions there are. like i would've guessed at its base the mobile/DS ports of 4/5/6 would've been the best, but then we have stuff like the SNES/GBC ports of 3 vs the mobile one? heck, all that i've seen of the HD2D remake of III so far seems to try really hard to avoid any elements of later remakes like the thief class, or showing specific classes (mostly since some versions, some classes lacked MP?).

Dragon Quest in a sense, kind of has a mild oversatuation with the ways you could even play the games. they went full-out with the Switch ports the moment XIS was announced. surely something must've been lost between mobile ports. they're in that position where a majority of the older games can be played on mobile devices, but it's a series that has tradition so they can't just say, remove all the games like they did with every final fantasy game (besides the 3D-remakes of 3/4) since that would hit their bottom line (japanese audience) HARD.

weirdly they updated the chrono trigger Steam/Mobile ports. assuming one motivator for Chrono Cross' remaster's update is that i think that game is probably going to get a mobile port and simply didn't touch the game until they had to, by then they may as well roll in any fixes to everyone else. removing a lot of the original content added in the PSP/GBA versions of FF1-6 is kind of bad, even if you do have orchestrated music, 8-directional movement and even a map. still counts as digital destruction. they even sat on a potential Switch release for like over a year+ only to sell a scalped physical release on their own store.
