What is your usual strategy in stealth games?

For whatever reason I always feel compelled to kill/knockout everyone. Hell, many of missions in Deus Ex I would sneak in and when leaving, kill/knockout everyone. Deep down I think it is my desire or compulsion to collect everything, guns, ammo, datapads, etc.

As the joke goes.....

Ah but do you do so in a loud and guns ablazing manner or do you silently take out each guard? I prefer the latter. Slowly taking out all the guards and hiding their bodies.

I try to kill/knock out everyone. However I do try to do it without getting noticed.
I am a senior software engineer. If you see me post here, I am tired of writing TPS reports.
It depends on the game. Like in the Hitman series I try and only kill the target because I'm a world class professional killer and I only kill those I'm contracted to kill.
Where as in the Tenchu series I kill everyone because it's feudal Japan and it's only fair to give samurai the honorable death they deserve seeing how I'm killing their master.
Or like in the Thief series I won't kill anyone because I'm a thief looking for loot not murder.
Basically I play every stealth game a little different depending on what the games story is.

when I played the Tenchu games, I tried to kill everyone, through stealth. I was a serial killer
I shoulda split up that option to "Kill/Knockout everyone with guns/fists ablazing" and "Kill/Knockout everyone silently and hide bodies"
"You must gather your party before venturing forth"
"Go for the eyes Boo! Go for the eyes!"
In games like Deus Ex and Dishonored, where I'm given a no-kill option, I will leave everyone unconscious, but never kill. I try to do it as sneaky as I possibly can.
First time through I will try to KO everyone because artificial/forced game length isn't fun. If it's blatantly obvious that it's impossible to do (a la security cameras that send you back to the start when they see you), then I go with stealth. But if it's doable (a la Breath of the Wild), I'll try it over and over until I get frustrated, take a break, and go for it the stealth way.

Depends on the objective.

Like, unless Assassin's Creed explicitly says to do otherwise, I'll kill (and possibly hide) other targets in the area (at least on the way to the destined mark) to make getting to and from the target much easier. If the game hands me a means to put other targets to sleep, then I'll use it where necessary.

No one will see you if you don't play.
Knockout everyone. Kill no one.
I knock out everyone possible for the lols but don't kill anyone who isn't required, well, as long as the game doesn't count it as a kill .

I went around Metal Gear Solid 3 throwing poison Spiders and Snakes at everyone, feeding hungry soldiers poison food, and dragged unconscious bodies off of cliffs and into the water, because the game doesn't count that as you killing them since it wasn't direct.
The only fool bigger than the person who knows it all is the person who argues with him. They're all complacent sheeple. Passion fights, but reason wins.
I tend to kill/Knockout everyone. I try the stealth route first by just knocking people out but at times that doesn't go to plan so it ends with their death.

Kill everyone. If you get bonus for non-lethal takedown then I take them down for the bonus and then kill them after. No one lives.

actually you are a person playing as a hitman.
I normally KO everyone, because if I try to sneak past anyone, that's always the exact moment they decide to look my way and give me away.
Stupid signature!
Silently KO as many people as possible.

Kill everyone silently. Once I inevitably fail that, go in guns ablazing.
"You rat! How dare you sell me so cheap." "NO ONE CALLS ME THAT WITHOUT SOME CHEESE!"
Life is uncertain. Eat dessert first.
Reload any time I get found out, spend 10x as long to finish the game as I should, end up hating it in the end.
It's okay, I have no idea who I am either.

Knockout anyone that gets in the way but no kills. Preferably no KOs either if possible and I always appreciate a hide the body mechanic.

Very cool. I think I'll try to incorporate a little more role playing in stealth games from now on.
Shame the devs didn't think of a reward system for this sort of behavior, unless I've missed any notable examples?

Same as my strategy for survival horror. Kill everything in sight.
I honestly enjoy stealth-kills even if it's less convenient than just sneaking by them. One of my favorite parts of Skyrim was sneaking around laying waste to forts, making use of my Khajiit's night vision perk to spot people even in darker areas (and also so I didn't need to risk being seen because I was holding a light or something). Then I'd use a bow to kill them from a distance so I wasn't ever at risk.

You know, that reminds me... I've tried changing up my behavior in Metal Gear Solid (1), but no matter what I do, the dialogue remains the same. Damned if I do, damned if I don't.

Like at the beginning of the game
Guard: "He's killed three people?"
Snake: "There's an intruder besides me?"
Me: "Snake, you killed at least 5 people already."

Or at the end of the game
"It's because you enjoy all the killing!"
"I saw the look on your face when you did it!"
Kill no one. Pacifist runs.

Never get tired of the Arkham games.

I had a more perverse approach. Using the pickpocket level 100 passive, stripe them naked, and leave em be. I wish the game woulda adjusted the dialogue accordingly to reflect the situation.

Move past those that I reasonably can.
Subdue those that are blocking my path or patrolling areas I intend to frequently move through.
Kill anyone I can't subdue.

Basically, I like to clear a hole in their defences and just use that as a central highway into all the areas I need to get into without having to clear guys out of the way each time.

It depends on the game, though. Payday 2, for example, limits you to 4 guard kills but unlimited civilian kills (though it costs you in game currency). The maps tend to not be to big. However, there is usually a guard overseeing the cameras. Because of that, one kill is reserved for him, the other three I generally pick out depending on the map and objective. I then try to avoid any casualties, but if I run out of wrist ties or the person would be difficult to move out of the way, I'll take them out and bag their bodies.
I remember in Hitman: Blood Money, most of my newspapers at the end of the stage tended to say "terrorist" and "no witnesses"...

On the matter of stealth games, has anybody tried Shadow Tactics yet?! It looks cool. I heard there was a demo but it's apparently gone now, from the looks of it.

Not play them. Or when I have to because of a sudden genre-shift, rage a lot at the screen and take ages.

Windwaker for example.
