How do you feel about SELF-DRIVING CARS?

Forgive the duckbeary sensationalism in the title. I was wondering what everyone's opinion on self driving cars is? Aside from my machismo coming to surface, (give me a clutch and a 6-speed H-gate for the rest of my life, please), I'm actually extremely concerned about losing the human element to safe driving and decision making.

Yes, it's true that 99.9% of all accidents are caused by human error (either not paying attention, underestimating distance needed to brake in relation to momentum and weight, underestimating weather effects on traction even in an AWD car, etc etc etc.) but there are certain situations where computer failure would lead to extremely deadly accidents. A human knows not to drive a car off of a bridge, or not to change lanes if you can physically see another car (provided they aren't in a blind spot). But what if the sensors fail, and give bad feedback? There would obviously be fail-safes in place for all kinds of sensor failures, but what if they failed "just enough" to not be "off" but simply tell it bad data? And the car suddenly decides it's going to go over a bridge? I have worked on cars long enough to know that all kinds of funny things happen with computers and sensors. Of course a self driving car has a FAR more sophisticated set up of sensors and feedback than just a simple O2 sensor for example, but if your O2 sensor is bad, your car might stay in open loop and run a little lean or rich. If a self-driving decides it's going to ram the whole vehicle 50MPH into another vehicle and kill somebody's kid...

I don't like it. Call me old, but I don't like the idea at all.

We should use self-driving cars for the exact same reasons we use computers for everything we possibly can.

Theyre testing a lot of them out here and I see them on the roads sometimes. The only accidents theyve been involved in were caused by human error from other vehicles. Theyre safer than having your average person behind the wheel.

Theyre the way of the future. When they become mandatory, there will be little to no traffic accidents/fatalities, no more traffic tickets, severely reduced auto insurance cost, and no more drunk drivers. Cant wait.
Im sure they probably are safer than a human driver but Id like to know what itll be like when most cars on the road (or even a lot of them) are self-driving.
I know it sounds kind of odd for me to say this about myself, but you should know that my mood changes with the wind.

I'm fascinated. The Ex'Driver anime seems prophetic, with a corps of skilled drivers in classic sports cars to intercept and stop malfunctioning self-driving cars.

I agree with TC, I'll keep my P-Type Supra with 5-speed, limited slip, stage 1 performance mods, etc.; but robot cars for the idiots that can't pay attention to their driving might be a good thing.

I voted for the first option. They work, but they'd work infinitely better if everyone on the road was using them. I say this even though I like driving.

I agree with this. As long as they don't ban mobile driving, I think I'll be fine.

Imagine having a single car for your household. You wake up, drive to work, send the car home, it grabs the kids, takes them to school, goes to the grocery store and picks up your groceries you ordered online and takes them home, your spouse empties the car, and then just before your work is done, it drives back to you and picks you up.

Or simpler example, your going to a football game, there is no parking anywhere near you. So you get dropped off at the door, and the car goes off to find parking on its own. When the game is done, you call the car back.

And let's not forget road trips. It would be really nice when driving down a long straight road for hours, to go take a nap in the backseat or watch a movie.

Driving is one of my favorite activities. Turning a wrench for 8 hours over a case of beer with friends (and my wife before she passed), and then testing it the next day to see what I shaved on my 1/4 mile time. And just driving in general. Feeling the g-forces, the clutch engaging and your right foot opening up the car into the power band. It's always been my #3 hobby in life after boxing and guns. Ever since I was a kid. There's just something about this visceral connection between man and machine as your car becomes an extension of your hand, knowing each engine rotation sound and feel in each gear. Especially high performance driving at a track (either drag strip or an actual circular track.)

How do I get something I love so much with what you're describing?

There will still be enthusiasts and places for drivers to go. Maybe auto cross will become more popular in the future.
Well for most to get enjoyment in driving they are the type that ideally would enjoy racing and stuff like that. I mean I never met say an Uber driver who absolutely loved driving and that was why he drove Uber. I would say about 95% of the US population would prefer if their car would drive itself assuming it was made 100% safe.

This is one of the most advanced self-driving cars I have seen, it was made in France partly due to the laws they have on self-driving cars there. If they can make something like this today, we are pretty damn close to making these 100% feasible for a moderate price point.

Yep, how dare we ask for more safety in the automobile world. I'm sure the fact that 1.3 million people die in auto collisions every year across the globe is completely worth it so those that love driving can experience that.

Dont ruin other peoples lives by their love ones getting killed or greatly injured in an auto accident for your satisfaction of driving. If everyone was mandated to have self driving cars, auto accident deaths would be extremely rare. Like someone else said, there will be places you can still drive fast and have fun while not endangering the safety and well being of others.

It would also be completely demolish vehicular enjoyment, spike purchase cost to the point of being prohibitive, collapse motorsport (that relies heavily on homologation) which kills R&D, make trains redundant (despite vast economic and environmental advantage) except for the filthy peasantry who once supported motoring now relegated to basically even shittier self-driving cars. And you know where a lot of those vehicular deaths happen? India and Africa where people can't afford train tickets so sit on the fucking roof so sure as shit can't afford a wheeled robot butler.

It is common for older people not to trust technology because they don't understand it. They don't care to learn it because they don't see the need when they've been doing it the same way for years with few issues. I see this attitude as an unnecessary way to handicap yourself. New technology is being developed every day for the exact purpose of making our lives easier. I look forward to the day when old people don't have this irrational fear of technology. Sure there will be issues, but nowhere near enough to swear off technology for the sake of being old fashioned.

Also they're not going to ban manual driving. That's just stupid.

I can speak only for myself, of course... but I just horrifically lost my wife in a car accident (including partial use of the left side of my body; we're hoping that's temporary), and I still love driving and racing. I don't like rain as much (someone lost control in the rain and hit us head on in a Truck vs our little Fiesta, you can see the result in the other topic if you want), but general driving is still a hobby of mine. Both for speed/pleasure/cruising, or just the meditative experience of connecting man/machine with the wind in your hair. That, and if the same thing happens (something completely out of my control causes me to be in a serious accident), I'll be with my wife. So I don't really care either way. I don't want anyone else to get hurt, though. I'm super careful in the rain, especially since I'm RWD.

We understand AI, the issue is taking control out of the hands of the user. Would you be okay planting cameras in your home connected to the internet to control your AI house to stop you doing things that might be dangerous? Because that's just as invasive, it's for your safety, surely this nannying pleases you?

Traffic isn't caused by bad driving, it's caused by bad infrastructure relative to traffic flow. No matter how automated you make driving, nobody would be willing to take a 30 minute detour because the main road is full of cars.
