When do you decide an employee's conduct needs to be reported to management?

As a customer what's something you consider a severe enough in your interaction with an employee that you won't tolerate it and expect some kind of consequence to be issued for the way you were treated?

We all know the frontline grunts put up with a lot of shit and reporting them over every little slight can make someone's life a lot worse than it already is but there are definitely limits.

Is it getting cussed at?

I have never encountered a case where I felt I needed to talk to a manager. But I also don't tend to get that pissed off about something. I would rather just make a mental note to never go back to that store or avoid that person next time I am in a store rather than tattle on them to management.
I feel like I need to put something here, or else I am one of those weird people who think that having no signature is a character trait.

Yeah, if someone's crossed that line where they've pissed me off, they've probably pissed off far more thin-skinned individuals than me who already reported them and gotten them fired.

Yeah ive never reported anyone to management but I have asked to speak to a manager on the phone because it seemed like the associate didnt really know how to handle the situation
The only times I've reported an employee's conduct to management was when I was also an employee working with them. Generally that took the form of reporting the conduct of one manager to a higher manager.
There are four lights.
I don't report anyone to the manager, because I assume the manager won't care. I just block all the doors and set fire to the building.

The only situation I can imagine is that it would have to be illegal (enough for me to feel I have some kind of duty to report it) but also not directly affect me (ie I don't care enough to either resolve it myself or get the police involved).
So I was standing still at a stationary store...

Absolutely true in my experience as long as its not something that could go to HR. The manager and staff will laugh at the customer together after they leave but mostly because the customer is a dumbass 98% of the time

True. Though the problem is, about 98% of the time the employee is also a dumbass or an asshole. And are just as narcissistic and self-centered as the customer, which is why neither party involved in the situation seems capable of anything resembling introspection.

I've been on both sides of the retail counter, and I've known people who've worked various retail jobs in various places. I can absolutely tell you from experience that it isn't always the customer's fault, even if the employee telling you the story makes it sound like it was.

Ha, I am the manager.

Pro tip: unless it's super serious and the calls are recorded, we do not care. the only thing you're doing is wasting your own time; we get paid to speak to you.

This falls into a category between annoyance (just not interacting with them) and criminal (they broke the law and are a burden to society), and I can't think any behavior that would land in between that spot.
Bells, bells, bells!
Never. Managers can eat a dick and I'll just stop going somewhere if I don't like the service.
Dunno, never reported an employer to a manager.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak out for me
At current job waaaaaaaaaay back in the day. This individual was not alright in the head. Talking down to me name calling classic middle school stuff. On a swing in the middle of rain lightning etc. I think about 6 months after they were gone. Doing same things to two others. How they lasted 13 years I haven't a clue.

I don't. Normally those type of people shoot themselves in the foot anyway. The last case was a security guard who asked if I bought a empty can of pop that I went outside to put in the bin when I got a trolly at a supermarket. It was a fair question and I said yeah but not from here. Besides that pop isn't sold here. He then proceeded to follow me around the store. I took my time on purpose when he did this and even then he decided to stand while I was getting severed on the self service watching me. At that point I said "can I help you?" He replied he was just doing his job and at that point the manager of the store told him to "get some work done and don't just stand around". I then just smiled at the guy and said "off you pop then". Needless to say I didn't see the guy at the store again after that. My guess is he was doing the same with other customers and the manager wasn't happy.

Yeah ive worked retail and restaurants as well and yeah... the associates are also prone to being passive aggressive assholes
I had a supervisor at a lumber yard that was a grade-A asshole. He was my age - we were both 26 at the time. We were only stocking shelves. He could be amicable, but conversation usually veered towards something strange. He'd say stuff like "hey, f****t" to me, almost daily. I had varying approaches towards 'keeping it real' with him - telling him to fuck off, telling him the way he acts is a waste of our time, ignoring him. He'd ask me which employees I'd rather sleep with, and include underage girls. I would tell him how gross that was, and he'd say "just answer hypothetically".

He wouldn't talk to you or greet you at the start of the shift, and just stare around with very wide eyes. He'd usually drink 3-4 energy drinks over the course of the shift. Once first break hit, he'd insist we all take break out in the smoke shed. He'd have his smoke, and tell us all about Joe Rogan episodes, because he said he'd watched them all. At that point in time, I knew that Joe Rogan had a podcast but didn't really know about the content, and didn't really care. This guy wanted to talk about sasquatches, aliens at Area 51 and "ego death" on psychedelics. I'd engage for a bit, but I found him arrogant in how he approached the topics. He didn't really want to discuss them, he wanted to tell us about them.

He dated a girl on our team - he'd always tell me that women liked being shoved against the wall without telling them it was coming. The girl he was dating seemed shy and withdrawn.

With regular work stuff, he'd withhold information, like how to print off price-tags. Buddy, we're adults - we can make this more efficient if you're not the price-tag nazi. At one point, he had me training a 15 year old kid on sticking stickers on different sales items - some 75%, some 50%, some 25%. I started with the 75% ones. He came over and questioned why I was starting with those ones. I explained that I could start at any set, and it wouldn't matter. He kept rebutting me. I threw all the papers up in the air, and looked him in the eyes and said "it sounds like you want to do it", and walked off. He came blabbering after me and I can't recall if he apologized. Regardless, waste of fucking time.

At some point, I transferred off the team. Dealing with him was a complete waste of my time and energy. They hired a 17 year old kid for the restocking team - he was actually quite smart and had enough roofing experience that he could answer customer questions on it very well. Of course, the supervisor proceeded to treat him like shit. He'd come and tell me about it, because I related and could take the heat off him a bit.

Eventually, this kid saw the supervisor having sex in a spare office with a cashier (different girl from the one he was dating) after-hours. This event was the straw that broke the camel's back. Me and the 17 year old dude went to HR with our 'findings'. I had all of my 'backup' info that I had already casually told managers about, and they didn't really seem to care. Him actively fucking around on shift got him fired. I feel like management should have paid enough attention to understand that he was wasting their time months previously, but they were a bunch of morons. I ended up quitting a few weeks after he got fired.
girls like my fa
As a customer, someone would have to actively do something fucked up (assault) for me to report it. If they were verbally going off I'd probably just leave. Depending on the severity I might call in to report it, especially if it constituted abusing the people around them.

Holy shit... if someone calls me a homophobic slur on the job, I'm going to HR immediately. Yall should've went to HR a lot sooner. Fuck people in management like that. I'm a manager at my job and cant imagine doing anything remotely in that ballpark lol. Lot of folks at my job are pretty protective of the work environment and would likely report someone doing anything close to that
I had a retail job over a decade ago and one of my coworkers always had the absolute worst BO, I doubt he showered or used deodorant at all. One day he smelled so horrid that 5 different customers filed formal written complaints that had to go to corporate.

Then a few weeks later we were all notified at work that corporate was asking all of us in our store to complete a hygiene module course and we all refused because we all knew exactly who the fuck the problem was.
