For me, tiers don't really matter at all.

I used Marth in Melee and Xianghua in SoulCalibur 2; I later found out that they were considered among the best characters in their respective games, but I didn't stop using them. On the flipside, I also used Mewtwo and Link in those respective games, and they were considered among the worst characters in them.

Then in Smash 4, I main Shulk, who was my most wanted character. He's not considered to be a very good character, but I try to make him work. I also like using Cloud, despite his being one of the best and one of the most controversial characters in the game.
In MvC3, one of my mains was Amaterasu, another wanted character for that game, and I don't think she's considered to be all too good, either. I also used Zero, who I believe is one of the best characters, but I could never use him optimally (as much as I like playing them, I'm average at best in most fighting games).
not really

for example, I recall Nightmare being considered mid-tier in SoulCalibur 2, but I still managed to beat Weapon Master mode with him (both times) and I did well with him when I played against friends, anyhow
Ave, true to Caesar.
Never, i'll always main Pikachu and Cyrax.
I'm bad enough at righting games that it really doesn't matter so I just play whoever I like the most. If I was playing in a really strong competitve scene, I'd care about tiers but I'm not so I don't.

I go for the highest-tier character that I can actually play well.

In the case of melee that ended up being...Captain Falcon. Because I lacked the patience to practice with anyone else.
This is LinksLiege's signature. It is fantastic.
Somewhat. If I like a few characters, I'll probably pick the highest one. But it depends.
I pick Bryan usually in Tekken because I prefer him over Heihachi since I find him too difficult to learn even though I enjoy him more on a casual level
sometimes i main bottom tiers, other times mid tiers, though it is rare i have top tier mains

it is pretty much entirely dependent on who is fun. sometimes that fun character is like NightWarriors Rikuo or Kabal and is good. Other times you have things that are bad like Bowser or Xrd Potemkin.
Certified bandicoot enthusiast.
If I know character X is really common, I'm not going to play a character who has an actively bad matchup against that field.

Not even a lil bit
Sometimes competitive use might be a tiebreaker between two characters I enjoy using equally, but I always prioritize a character's design and fun factor over competitive status. I actually don't think I've ended up maining a top tier character in any of the fighting games I've put a lot of time into... let me check EventHubs.

Soul Calibur 2 = Necrid (high-mid tier) and Talim (low-mid tier)
Soul Calibur 5 = Pyrrha Omega (high-mid tier) and Ezio (low tier)
Smash Bros. Melee = Pikachu (mid tier) and Kirby (shit tier)
Smash Bros. 4 Wii U = Corrin (high-mid tier) and Charizard (shit tier)
Pokken Tournament = Chandelure (mid tier) and Garchomp (low tier)
Tekken 7 = King (high-mid tier) and Alisa (low tier)

Nope, looks like I never have. Closest I've come to maining a top tier is Corrin just after release, before that down-B counter move got nerfed.

I suck at fighting games and don't play them much, so nope not a consideration at all.

0 - 1 thus far (after like 2 years)
Not really. I mostly play as whichever character is most interesting. But sometimes, I guess.
I'll consider it, but I don't immediately go for the top tier characters. A lot of my favorite characters are mid-tier. I'll opt for playstyle over tier list position. Some of my favorite characters from fighting game series I've played:

Guilty Gear: Ky, Anji, Millia, Jam, Johnny
Street Fighter: Ryu, Guile, Cammy, Chun Li
Soul Calibur: Siegfried, Nightmare, Raphael, Ivy
Tekken: Jin, Kazuya, Lei, Nina, Bryan
Super Smash Bros: Marth, Ike, Link, Ganondorf, Ryu, Robin, Mega Man
Tiers are fun but I don't play competitively so it doesn't matter.

Other: I don't even have mains. Rather, I have reverse-mains: Characters I would never touch unless I need to for some specific reason, or get unlucky when picking random fighters. And I never look at tiers, either, so I don't even know which characters are best competitively.

Tiers are generally reflections of how quality a character's kit is, so yeah. It's not really fun to use a lower tiered character that just isn't well equipped to fight the best characters. I don't let it control my decision and I play characters that suit my playstyle, but I don't undercut myself.

No. Hakumen was garbage-tier in CPE but I still played him
I would never put money on the line at a tournament, while playing a mid or bottom tier character. You're basically telling everyone here, take my money and enjoy it .

That said, I do play with whatever character seems fun or cool, regardless of tier, when I'm just playing casual games with friends.
