I remember hitting a difficulty spike in the first one and giving up on it. I think it was the big dudes with the shields?

I know which enemies you're referring to, and they're not so bad. You can't attack them from the front, so you need to get the from the sides and behind, or stomp on them with Mario, and use Rabbid Peach's or Luigi's Sentry. Plus you can reallocate your skill tree at any time outside of a battle to deal with the situation, like having more HP. If you still have Kingdom Battle and are willing to give it another try, I'd say go for it.

Now there's a blast from the past. That game was like a straight FFT ripoff, but actually quite enjoyable.

Suikoden Tactics is fun even if you dislike 4,though if you have a perfect save data of 4 you can get the best character in the game in Tactics.

It has a steep learning curve, but the first few chapters are easy enough you can get away by equipping basic masteries and play it simple. Only the violent cases require extra effort. However the story's difficulty ramps up later

I did buy this one myself, the translation seemed very bad when I originally tried it though. Has it improved since then?
Most of the great ones have been mentioned. I'll add Battle For Wesnoth, Dark Wizard, and the Growlanser series.

They changed it but it is still like early 2000s jrpg. Playable and comprehensible but dont expect anything more.

arc the lad series still my all time fav series 1st game is a prologue while the second is the best in the series 3 is a fun plate cleanser and 4 is decent as for 5...... ignore it and pretend it doesn't exist

Seems obvious, but a surprising number of tactics fans don't check out XCOM because it's not in the same fantasy circles. For sheer refinement and content variety, XCOM2: War of The Chosen can't be beat.

I'd second a few of these, but would also recommend Banner Saga. I think the trilogy is amazing.
