Guns are more dangerous for murder/suicides not just because they're better weapons, it's because they give people less time to reconsider.

Or maybe he forgot to kill the kid. The guy uh... obviously wasn't thinking rationally at the time. That goes double if it turns out he was under the influence of drugs/alcohol at the time (which is pretty common in familicide-suicides)Or maybe he was so effed in the head that he didn't think of saving himself for last.
