I've been watching the show for the first time. I got done with the 70s episodes and up next is the 80s revival.

Columbo doesn't really need a grand finale. Although a good one was in the episode Last Salute To The Commodore , which from what I've read was intended as a finale, but that was the worst episode and thankfully they didn't end it there.

Columbo doing what he always did best is very fitting though.

The topic made me want to watch some Columbo, so I did. Seems like many dislike or even hate Columbo Goes To The Guillotine , but I thought it was fine. Not perfect, but fine. I'd compare it to some of the mid tier episodes of the 70s. It's sort of a mix of some of the old episodes in terms of plot and characters, but that's also fine for a comeback episode. Also like how the victim is pretty much James Randi.

I think it's mostly that ending sequence that was dumb

Might have worked better if the guy forced Columbo rather than him doing it voluntarily but Columbo isn't that kind of show

Yeah, that's a fair flaw, but I didn't hate it. I do wish it was changed to where Columbo had the thing rigged to where no matter which side was put on, it was safe. And to be fair, he did something like this before where he had dinner with that critic who poisoned his victim with fugu.

I've never actually seen any of the Columbo revival episodes and that video in the OP is giving me extreme whiplash.

That fucking song they played 400 times in the episode honestly ruined it for me. I don't really remember if anything about it was good because all i remember is that one song they licensed.

The final episode is not as bad as commodore but it's pretty bad regardless and it was an awful end to the series. There was another episode/movie planned written by Peter Falk but his health took a turn for the worse before he could get it approved.

It would be pretty hard. Biggest problem is getting Columbo assigned to the case. He's a homicide detective so at first he wouldn't even be investigating since Light made it all look like heart attacks. He's solved some "impossible" murders before though like the one where the murderer used a robot to pretend to play a wargame to set his alibi and he is religious so he probably wouldn't immediately discount a supernatural murder if there was evidence of it.

If he ever somehow managed to track down Light in person though it's over. He's super perceptive and would immediately be able to pick up on Light's social cues that the book was really important and he has a habit of grabbing shit that is relevant to murder even if he has no idea what it is (see: Suitable to be Framed). Because nobody knows his first name and he refuses to give it when asked, Light could not use the Death Note on him.
