That other topic having this come up for debate made me want to settle it. I had not realized this answer was uncertain. Perhaps it's a regional thing but I was always quite sure it was definitive that one of these I won't say yet to not add bias to the responses. I put the choices in alphabetical order to not show any favoritism; so you can't say which I prefer from how I wrote it.

I'm from the northeast too, Queens born and Jersey native, sure you could say plain pizza but everyone also says cheese pizza and it means the same thing.

Yeah. I went out to Colorado a year and a half ago for work and we were ordering pizza and I said I'm fine with plain. He had to ask cause he thought I meant just bread basically lol

And another time I was in Amsterdam at an alleged NY pizza place and asked for a plain slice and the guy had no clue what I meant for like two minutes

plain makes sense but i feel like it would be more of a "what toppings do you want?" "oh just plain" kind of context around here. still, everyone would know it means cheese pizza.

I assume you mean with just sauce and cheese. I would call that a cheese pizza. I wouldn't be confused if someone called that a plain pizza.

If it's just cheese on crust then I wouldn't call that a pizza. That would maybe be cheesy bread.

I say "Pizza" when I want Pizza.

I would only say "Plain pizza" if other people are order pizza around me and asking for toppings, so I would say plain to signify I do not want any extra toppings.

It's always been referred to as a "cheese pizza" here. But yeah, it could be regional. Like how some parts of the South call every soda a Coke. Or how up north it's called pop.

It's called both cheese pizza and plain pizza around me, but since I was a kid I hated the term cheese pizza. Like duh that's the default just call it "pizza" at that point with no other words attached

I'm not surprised different regions have different terms, but that topic was the first time I've ever seen people actually confused by the term "cheese pizza".

To the people who call it a "plain pizza", what if you order it with extra cheese as a topping? Is that now a "cheese pizza"? Is it still a "plain pizza"? Or do you just jump straight to "extra cheese pizza"?

A plain pizza is a pizza with no toppings (and not a white pizza), in the NY/NJ/Philly area, which also happens to be where the best pizza is located. Therefore, this is the correct term. By extension, if you've NEVER heard anybody say it, you have never been exposed to the best pizza.

Cheese pizza is only something I've heard people on tv say. Always called it plain. Which is weird, cause iirc you lived in the Bergen/Hudson area at one point, same as I.
