I'm tired of putting up with noisy neighbors with their own problems. I can't believe this woman up above from me. Who spent 7 hours yesterday cleaning every inch of her whole apartment room, and constantly walking back and forth loudly. I couldn't do anything I like during that time like gaming or watching shows, as I'd have a hard time concentrating.

I don't know why people can't be more quieter, can't walk softer, or even realize they're being way too nosy for a long stretch. After 6 hours of it, I yelled for her to "quiet down", and talked to a property manager about it, but according to manager that seemed normal of that tenant to be cleaning. Though I'm suppose to come see the manager today, if she's still being nosy.

I'm one week into living in my new apartment, and I already kinda wish I was living back at my Grandparent's house. Even though I had different problems with them as well.

Yeah, I hate it when my downstairs neighbors are too nosy as well. I mean really, mind your own business what I get up to.

Chivalry be hanged, and so will you.
Good luck getting a property manager to take your side against a tenant spending 7 hours cleaning the property.

Honestly sounds like your building has shit soundproofing. She should be able to walk around her apartment without tiptoeing around.

had a situation where an upstairs neighbor was just super noisy. like, when he came back from work, it sounded like he threw his boots across the room. then, after walking his dog, he let the metal side of the leash slam on the ground, then let it drag around. and of course, his dog just running around at 2 am and them not doing anything about it for 30 minutes. he also sounded like he stomped pretty much everywhere. there were also days where it sounded like he was rearranging all his furniture, scraping and dragging everything for hours.

now, if i have to get an apartment, it's always the top floor or i'm not moving in

Yeah it does have lousy soundproofing. I do remember the property manager, when I first was moving in, saying the walls we're thin.

does white noise help at all?

sometimes I turn on a fan in whatever room I'm expecting to spend an extended period in, and it helps outside sounds feel less intrusive.

at least, to me.

Many leases have rules regarding a percent of the unit that must be carpeted, for noise suppression. Of course, they are never enforced unless somebody complains. If TC wanted to escalate, they could verify that such a rule exists, then request an inspection for compliance.

But it might be simpler to get headphones.
get some active noise cancelling earbuds or headphones cuz loud neighbors in apartments is a permanent thing

I might try that the next time I'm on the computer and it's nosy. I already sleep with a fan running, which I got into doing that a decade ago due to neighbor dogs constantly barking.

It definitely depends on the building. Where I live now I barely hear my neighbors. Where I used to live, my downstairs neighbor would slam his apartment door as hard as possible seemingly every time he closed it and it got annoying.

Yeah, in all seriousness, Ive lived in a few apartments and noise has literally never been a problem in any of them, but I think its been because of the buildings themselves.
The last apartment I lived in had a live taping of The Jerry Springer Show taking place in the apartment above me every night around 1:30 AM. Or at least it sounded that way. It was annoying at the time, but now I just laugh when I remember choice quotes like "I CAN SLEEP WITH WHOEVER I WANT!" and "NOW I KNOW WHY YOU'RE ALWAYS DOWN AT HOOTERS!"

This. A pair of quality ANC headphones is the best investment I've ever made. I end up wearing them most of my waking hours around the house.

Yeah, it sucks. Spent 3.5 years at the same apartment before moving into a house back in March. I hated my downstairs neighbor so much. She would scream at her boyfriend and kids all the time, calling them motherfuckers. Plus, there was always trash around the property because people had no respect.

High end apartments aren't as bad where peace is maintained better, but I had to try to find a 3 bedroom (I have 4 daughters part of the time) for under $2k a month, which is really hard.

I love being in a house again even if a lot more work. But even though I make good money, I can only afford it because my new wife makes good money too. People shouldn't need a combined income as high as ours simply to buy a nice house with enough bedrooms and space for a family. The real estate market is fucked up.

You know, I don't live that far from my Grandparent's house. I should just set up a TV and chair in their guest room. So I have somewhere to go too and relax, when I need a break from apartment living.

I live in a house, and have a neighbor who spends like 8 hours every Sunday running a combination of their lawnmower, trimmer, leaf blower, power washer, chainsaw, whatever. EVERY SUNDAY. ALL DAY.

Yeah, all my stuff is electric. Not only less noisy and better for the environment, it also means that I am not breathing in fumes. Plus, trying to get gas powered stuff to work again in the Spring was always a nightmare.

well that sucks cuz most of the apartment i lived in didn't have those issue here tho my recent one has a asshole landlord
anyway ether TC can get his manager to soundproof his apartment or get white noise machine and headphones cuz that helps

Yup. My lawn mower and trimmer are both electric.

I think my neighbor just likes hearing the sound of a motor revving, because not only does he run stuff all day, but it's never just "on", it's just hours of VROOM VROOM VROOOOOOM

they do help. just enough to drown out the loudest noise but not completely (helped a few days ago against fireworks so i could sleep).

when my uncle passed away the upstairs neighbor kept asking for money, i had to say i had medical bills to pay and they stopped coming (it was leaving me short on cash plus my living situation is still unstable).

I too have a stompy upstairs neighbor but I'm thankful that's the only thing I have to deal with regularly. I've had to deal with 2 separate downstairs neighbors that were a screamy, bickery couple and someone who played loud music late at night, respectively.

But headphones during the day, a sound machine at night and anti-vibration pads under my bed have worked wonders for me.

For apartments, the top floor is always best.

I stayed with my mom for far too long but it allowed me to save up lots of money. Unfortunately I live in a townhome with crappy side neighbors. The neighborhood is new and ritzy and the home next to mine is being used as rental property. They'll just let anyone in nowadays

My wife and I want to move out but Cali prices are through the roof. 1.2 million for a detached home built 40 years ago at 1500 sq ft? Wtf. I'm in 2400 sq ft so I'll have to weather this insane price gouging.

Apartment life doesn't really bother me but it's mostly all I've known. I grew up in a house but since moving out I've only ever had apartments. I had no choice but to get used to it.
Save for your doomed future
I have the same issues at my current apartment. I moved into a 1 bedroom apartment 2 years ago that's decent but the walls are very thin. My downstairs nabour gets into fights with her boyfriend or dog every couple of days and all I hear is cussing and doors slamming. This will go on for hours in the middle of the night.

The worst part is she blasts music after every fight and it's the same damn playlist every time. She's mental and I've confronted her about it. Sometimes I hear the dog walling with her threatening to abandon it. Last week I was close to calling animal control it sounded like she was fighting the animal last week.
I lived in an apartment for about 4 years when I first got home from the military and before I bought my house in 2004. It was right next to my work and I work on a college campus so these apartments were filled with 99% kids going to college.

i expected it to be noisy and it wasnt at all. Couldnt hear any neighbors in normal conditions. They would often have a party on Thursday nights as that was the big party night and I could hear music and people talking outside but it wasnt that bad and even back then I used a 5.1 speaker setup with my tv and Id turn it up just a little bit and then I couldnt hear them.

I didnt mind at all. I pretty much had quiet and respectful people everywhere which again was really surprising for a college campus. Plus I think the building was just built really well and masked most of the normal sounds. You never heard people walking or closing doors. It was just quiet.

All in all it was a pretty relaxing time in my life. I like having a house way better out in the middle of cornfields and cow pastures way better for sure. But I did enjoy the no lawn care part, no snow removal, no cleaning out gutters or needing to be responsible for any maintenance. It was really easy to keep a small 1 bedroom apartment tidy and clean. I didnt accumulate so much shit like I do with my house.

And even though I currently live quite cheap there was no beating that back then. Where I live is some of the lowest cost of living in the U.S. even now but man back in the early 2000s my apartment was like $450 a month and came with free cable and high speed internet and free garbage and water. My only other bill was utilities which ran me like $45 a month. I had a lower level apartment sunk into the ground where my living room window was even with the ground outside. It was so easy to heat and cool.

So yeah other than buying my food I lived on less than $500 there and I didnt need to drive to work since I was right next door practically. That was a pretty good setup for me from like 23 to 27. Didnt hurt being surrounded by college women either.

Should blame the shitty build of the apartment. Not necessarily the neighbor.

If simple cleaning is making that much noise, that's a horrible build that isnt all that soundproof.

not without it's downsides tho if you move on the top floor then you must deal with leaking water during raining seasons and then there are some apartment that have shitty water pipe work where you don't get a decent flow of water

I just moved back into my own apartment again after living with some buddies in a townhouse for 6 years. I was dreading it at first because it kinda sucks going from a house to an apartment again. But it's been a couple months now and it's been good. My downstairs neighbor slams their front door hard though. I think it's so their dog or cat isn't trying to run out is what I've chalked it up to probably being.

I live in a neighborhood where most people have to show up for work every morning. This creates a vibe that you do not make noise. I live in an old brick building where the bricks provide the structural support. And of course floors are insulated by a dropped ceiling under the Victorian ceiling.

This said my problem has been air quality. This is much aggravated by households with surreptitious extras. And people violating the non smoking clause.

I have an air intake using the bathroom window to create a positive pressure. I run my mila cares air purifier on 50% fan because higher than this it just pulls in bad air from the building due to structural aging. Before I just had to let in outdoor air --- and yes the aq in this building is way over 100. 150 seems to be average. People just do not open windows

i hate when people smoke in the house while they have that in play. i almost lost my deposit because my uncle wanted to smoke in his room because of his sciatica pain and the cold air outside didn't help things.

if the apartment manager found out i would've forfeit my security deposit and gotten evicted. but crime scene people helped clean the room so it became like new. people on CE know about that story that happened in april last year (uncle ended himself while under the effects of math psychosis after 4 days of going crazy).

Wtf is up with the furniture thing? Why the hell do people rearrange their furniture for like 16 straight hours a day
Even with a house you get neighbors who play music so loud it can be heard multiple houses away. Though depending on where you are cops actually respond and ticket them.

People are just assholes.

I don't want to live on this planet anymore.
that's why i refused to even look at apartments. they're too expensive for how crappy most are. most friends i've visited that lived in apartments usually had quiet neighbors but my friends were the loud one with kids and stuff so always wondered how much their neighbors got annoyed by them. then had another friend that lived alone but whenever i'd stay over there cause he lived far away i'd always get woken up early in the morning from their neighbors yelling at each other. some couple so guessing 1 worked midnights and as soon as they got home shit would hit the fan. happened like 3 different times i stayed there.

The last apartment my wife and I lived in before buying our home wasn't the greatest experience. Noisy neighbors directly above us with questionable behavior; we'd often hear arguing and screaming between a man and woman to the extent that we considered calling the police. We complained multiple times to the property manager who did nothing of course.

Now we are in our single family house - glad to no longer share walls with anybody.

All I can suggest to you is to look for a semi-detached apartment/house that was built in the past 20 years. Living codes updated around that time, at least up here in Canada so noise and fireproofing were top notch. When I was living in my semi-detached, I didn't even know I had neighbours, that's how quiet it was.
My first apartment was in a shitty neighborhood and had terrible soundproofing.

- My direct neighbor had a yappy dog that would endlessly bark and howl when it was left alone, which happened several nights a week. It would just keep barking for hours until it collapsed from exhaustion halfway through the night. Luckily she moved out quick.

- The guy who replaced her was a raging alcoholic who would regularly pass out drunk in the hallway. He had the habit of spending his nights LOUDLY vomiting his guts out. Oh how I missed that shitty dog.

- The guy two doors down was a drummer in a metal band and he had a drum kit in his apartment. Wish I was making this up.

- Neighbor on the other side had some mental issues and was kicked out after he set fire to his balcony for the THIRD time.

Getting tf out of there was great for my mental health.
