"Octopodes" is pretentious but there is a linguistic case to be made for it.
"Octopi" is unarguably wrong.

I feel like people will generally know what you're talking about with "octopuses" and "octopi" and so they're both fine. "Octopodes" will probably be understood but by less people and so is less useful regardless of its correctness.
