this is well put. i dont know that it would completely eliminate discussion, but a lot of Lies of P discussion did turn into this once they added the difficulty options
they added easy mode to elden ring and it was their most wildly successful game by an enormous amountI would consider reducing "add an easy mode" to "has strong weapons" when it is clear that that's absolutely not what anyone is talking about to be very toxic.
And that's a good thing because you are interacting with the community. This breeds discussion and makes the game community come together, talking strats, talking about what part they found bullshit, etc.A game having an easy mode doesn't necessarily remove the need for discussion. It just changes the focus of the discussion. People can still discuss the story, build ideas, hidden areas on the map, etc.
Someone found a boss weakness or cheese stratergy, posted it online others used it and shared how they beat him.
It's the diffrence between.
"I can't beat boss #3! He attacks too fast and I don't do enougth damage."
"Try fire he's weak to it."
"Nah just use bleed he has a small health pool."
"I found a 100% pysical shield works well because all his attacks are physical."
"Dude you can break his ai by standing here!"
Vs a game that tries to ehm "fix" the diffculty.
"I couldn't beat boss #3, so I turned the diffculty down and beat him.... Any one want to talk about the game... Hello?"
oh god ppl got TURBO buttmad at the added difficulty options for lies of P to the point of canceling their pre-order and leaving a negative review.. despite them leaving the game's original difficulty alone...i do think adding the modes broke Legendary Stalker mode for the DLC, but that could just be correlation
souls game gatekeepers are 1 of the worst facets of gaming and u can't convince me otherwise
I've only played Elden Ring so my experiences are limited. I do find it funny that since I'm not so good at it and I use spirit ashes and some of the top tier weapons depending on play styles and need, there are people who supposedly look down on me if not worse.lmao yeah. i love that image, its exactly right
I feel like this meme image. Me on the right. Just imagine spirit ashes, Blasphemous Blade, and other things are above it. I'm too lazy to photoshop them in.

Yeah this really chaps my ass too. People be beating these games on invalid difficulties.what does this mean?
"The game doesn't need an easy mode! All the tools you need are already in the game! Also, don't use any of those tools to make the game easier!"i dont have any reason to believe those are the same people tbh

Ive never quite understood the attitude to be honest. Souls is tricky but its bosses are pretty far from the most difficult bosses Ive faced in gaming.this too. of all the things to hinge some ego on it. i'll never understand
idk man sitting back and spamming that big laser has always been really lame. i didn't even find that spell on my int playthrough, i ended up using the clayman harpoonyou know that meme where spongebob and patrick are on a baby ride that goes over a speedbump and they're tense/scared as hell? it's just that. just because its boring or lame to us doesnt mean its that for others. for some people it's exhilarating and intense as hell

If accessing your "easy mode" requires going online, researching specific builds, bum-rushing areas out-of-sequence to get certain items, fighting midgame bosses to get the equipment behind them, looking up further out-of-sequence routes to inorganically rush upgrade materials, grind for hours to get the stats to actually equip all this shiny new stuff, etc... can it even be called an "easy mode" at that point? This was something else that came up in my experience. Before I started, as a completely new Souls player, I ran a few Google searches along the lines of "Elden Ring beginner tips". I was hoping for general advice like "concentrate on levelling up vitality and one attack stat, this weapon is a good starting choice" (which I did see some of). What I ended up seeing more of was "run straight across the map from the beginning, hit this illusory wall, talk to the person there, go back to this area near the start, talk to this person, and then you'll unlock a shop that sells the best early game weapon" (paraphrasing, not a specific exact quote). Such a bizarre way to introduce a new player to your game: "skip all this discovery".
Are Souls games are the only genre of thing in the entire world where people argue for it to change something fundamental about it to attract people who aren't really all that interested in it?Probably because there no fundamental law of physics that injects the Conjuring into every discussion about everything.
You don't see people asking people to tone down the horror of something because they want to enjoy the Conjuring franchise but I just can't get into those movies because they're too spooky
The Souls community is pretty much the most toxic community. Yes I get that it's a minority who are toxic but that minority are EXTREMELY toxic and obnoxious.prior to elden ring i dont think id be able to disagree. nowadays i think hate groups are worse than annoying fan groups. like dedicated nintendo haters or naughty dog haters
Weird nerds having pissing contests is always bizarre but not unexpectedsomebody tried to dox me because i said "why do nerds fetishize difficulty"
I'll never understand people who gatekeep.
How does it tangibly affect you if someone else plays on easy mode, uses a spirit ash, summons, or whatnot? Have you considered that they aren't playing the game for the difficulty but rather something else?
I've noticed a lot of these types feel special for doing something that is seen as difficult and when someone takes away that difficulty it takes away their specialness. This makes them mad.
At the end of the say it's kind of childish
Me realizing how stupid this discourse was because one of my friends who is *worse at games than me* tried to give me shit for using the Jellyfish Summon in ER XDNot the jellyfish!
my jellyfish summon dies 90% of the time before it can be useful... or at least proc it's poisonIt's a good distraction.
It's a good distraction.true, i do get some decent charged r2s usually.
I play mage AND use summons in Elden Ring. Hope the elitists don't have an aneurism or whatever.Mage only really goes so far. I did a pure caster until about the time I went down to the underground city, then I transitioned to a Int / Dex Spellblade build with the Moonveil Katana, and I was using the katana most of the time thereafter. By the end of the game, I was hurting and considering a respec to a Bleed build with Rivers of Blood and so on, but I stuck it out.
Probably because there no fundamental law of physics that injects the Conjuring into every discussion about everything.
"How can you make a top X bosses list without Ornstein and Smaug?"
"Why doesn't this game glue the camera to your back like in real video games?"
"How come the shield doesn't work exactly like in Dark Souls?"
"Ha, this movie is like that one random bullshit area in Dark Souls 8, lol, you know which one I'm talking about, RIGHT?"
"Well, I might give it a try if it were more accessible..."
"Holy shit, not everything is supposed to be for everyone!"
