Anyway to answer the question posed -

I think a lot of people have never been good at anything at all in life, so when they managed to be good at this one thing they might be inclined to gatekeep it. To them its not just enjoying a videogame, its validation that they're worth something.

Reddit is really good at amplifying these voices through its very structure.

I've only played Elden Ring so my experiences are limited. I do find it funny that since I'm not so good at it and I use spirit ashes and some of the top tier weapons depending on play styles and need, there are people who supposedly look down on me if not worse.

I feel like this meme image. Me on the right. Just imagine spirit ashes, Blasphemous Blade, and other things are above it. I'm too lazy to photoshop them in.

they added easy mode to elden ring and it was their most wildly successful game by an enormous amount
I would consider reducing "add an easy mode" to "has strong weapons" when it is clear that that's absolutely not what anyone is talking about to be very toxic.

And that's a good thing because you are interacting with the community. This breeds discussion and makes the game community come together, talking strats, talking about what part they found bullshit, etc.

Someone found a boss weakness or cheese stratergy, posted it online others used it and shared how they beat him.

It's the diffrence between.
"I can't beat boss #3! He attacks too fast and I don't do enougth damage."
"Try fire he's weak to it."
"Nah just use bleed he has a small health pool."
"I found a 100% pysical shield works well because all his attacks are physical."
"Dude you can break his ai by standing here!"

Vs a game that tries to ehm "fix" the diffculty.

"I couldn't beat boss #3, so I turned the diffculty down and beat him.... Any one want to talk about the game... Hello?"
A game having an easy mode doesn't necessarily remove the need for discussion. It just changes the focus of the discussion. People can still discuss the story, build ideas, hidden areas on the map, etc.

I think the pro-invader players are the most insufferable part of the community. Perpetual victims who think everybody else is the problem.

But my personal favorite is how protective they are on their reddit community. Complain about brigading and not wanting anti-invasion people there, when their whole schtick is forcefully inserting themselves where they aren't wanted.
The ball is round, the game lasts 90 minutes. That's fact.
Everything else, is theory.
Idk why people want so much validation for playing a game a certain way. Play how you want, why does it matter getting affirmation from people online?

Are Souls games are the only genre of thing in the entire world where people argue for it to change something fundamental about it to attract people who aren't really all that interested in it?

Maybe not 100% on topic but a related story that happened to me recently.

I'd never played a Souls game because I don't enjoy difficulty for the sake of it and, to be honest, the community put me off. I recently decided to give Elden Ring a try because it was cheap on sale and I'd beaten (and loved) Armored Core 6 earlier this year so how hard could Souls games really be?

A friend of mine who considers himself a hardcore gamer had started Elden Ring a couple years ago but never finished it (I don't think he even got very far). When I told him I'd started it, he immediately tried to tell me what the "OP build" is and how to play, reinstalled and started a new game himself, said it wouldn't count as beating the game anyway because I was playing on PC and would definitely be cheating, and then when I finished the game before him he uninstalled it and said it was boring and not worth playing.

I dunno, if a friend of mine started playing a game/series that I was a big fan of I feel like I'd be trying to positively engage with them rather than gatekeeping. By the end of my playthrough I was skipping a lot of the optional bosses/areas because I just wanted to finish it and wasn't enjoying the game enough to drag the experience out any longer, and I think a big part of that was it being spoiled by my "Souls fan" friend. I doubt I'll play any other Souls games in future

If accessing your "easy mode" requires going online, researching specific builds, bum-rushing areas out-of-sequence to get certain items, fighting midgame bosses to get the equipment behind them, looking up further out-of-sequence routes to inorganically rush upgrade materials, grind for hours to get the stats to actually equip all this shiny new stuff, etc... can it even be called an "easy mode" at that point?
This was something else that came up in my experience. Before I started, as a completely new Souls player, I ran a few Google searches along the lines of "Elden Ring beginner tips". I was hoping for general advice like "concentrate on levelling up vitality and one attack stat, this weapon is a good starting choice" (which I did see some of). What I ended up seeing more of was "run straight across the map from the beginning, hit this illusory wall, talk to the person there, go back to this area near the start, talk to this person, and then you'll unlock a shop that sells the best early game weapon" (paraphrasing, not a specific exact quote). Such a bizarre way to introduce a new player to your game: "skip all this discovery".

I'll never understand people who gatekeep.

How does it tangibly affect you if someone else plays on easy mode, uses a spirit ash, summons, or whatnot? Have you considered that they aren't playing the game for the difficulty but rather something else?

I've noticed a lot of these types feel special for doing something that is seen as difficult and when someone takes away that difficulty it takes away their specialness. This makes them mad.

At the end of the say it's kind of childish

I understand not wanting things to change because you just like how things have always been. gatekeeping, I think, is a sort of extremist version of that. if you're a huge fan of something and you like how it is now, you tend to be protective of it. I get that. but it's not your game and the devs are going to change it if they really feel that they need to.

Mage only really goes so far. I did a pure caster until about the time I went down to the underground city, then I transitioned to a Int / Dex Spellblade build with the Moonveil Katana, and I was using the katana most of the time thereafter. By the end of the game, I was hurting and considering a respec to a Bleed build with Rivers of Blood and so on, but I stuck it out.

I'm at Fume Knight in DS2, for the second time.

How? You ask.

No idea, although I think me not checking a room behind him caused him to respawn after I finally f#%^ing killed him. Which is a problem, because in 10 hours of trying to beat him I've only beaten him once. At this point, I'll use any summons or help I can get. I suspect my big bonk build hinders me (along with my not great reflexes)

Did I mention I'm level 157? Yeah...Help! I need somebody!

I guess my playstyle leads me to hate any and all gatekeeping in the souls series. By hook or by crook do whatever you need to to kill the boss and move on with life.
