The CNN conservatives seemed a bit aghast. I think they too imagined the ballroom attached to the East Wing, not replacing it entirely.

But I'm not going to pretend the wing was being used properly. FLOTUS benefits from having an office for their initiatives, but that was a lot of undocumented and unmapped space. Mostly offices and utility rooms. And that poor calligraphy office. We're going to have a damn ballroom over the emergency operations center.

If and when that ballroom gets built, I wouldn't be surprised if it has to be office space or storage between events. And then when Trump is gone, we get rid of all that gold leaf and moulding.

It doesn't. At least not something disgusting and gaudy that makes the executive residence look tiny.

That doesn't mean things are fine as is. We don't have a good permanent event space at the White House. Just a couple of staterooms for diplomacy and tents wherever we need them. It barely works. I suspect the West Wing becoming less of a dungeon is something to do over the next decade or two.
