Only 4 months have passed and we already have one of the best years in gaming history, with more still to come.

What is your pick for GotY so far?

so far of what I've played from those choices

Breath of the Wild > Persona 5 > Resident Evil 7 > Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Zelda revolutionized open world games again much in the same way Skyrim did. I was fully engaged for the 150+ hours that I played it and still wanted to play more even after I did essentially everything

Persona 5 is another great Persona game in the vein of 3 and 4 and probably would have been #1 any other year

Resident Evil 7 I think would be higher if my mind could handle not getting sick in VR because this game is really VR's Mario 64. As it stands though it's a borderline Top 3 Resident Evil game for me. I loved every moment of it.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe really shouldn't count but it's still a great game and fun to play!

I have played the demo of Automata and I expect it to be great but that's not enough to judge a whole game yet.

I did not like the Nioh demos but people say the main game is much butter so I'll have to see.

I probably would have been starting either one of those two games or Horizon soon if not for Trails in the Sky the 3rd coming out this week

Persona 5 > Nioh > The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild > Resident Evil 7 > Horizon: Zero Dawn

I have only played about 10 hours of Zelda and about 3 hours of Horizon though. About 80% done with Persona 5 but I plan to do a second playthrough right after.

Persona 5 looks like it will break into my Top 10 list and Nioh is already Top 50 at the very least. Two incredible games. RE7 is also another game I absolutely loved. A true revival for the Survival Horror genre. Amazing year already.

Breath of the Wild's almost certainly going to win, but I like RE7 the best from what I've seen

It's always fun to see who the trolls are...

One is the second highest rated game ever, and almost assuredly game of the Decade unless something beyond mind blowing comes out the next 2 years, the others are not. And in the case of some, are in fact unmitigated disasters that didn't remotely meet expectations.

Sure but just because it's totally broken and empty doesn't mean you can't enjoy the new zelda. The charm makes up for a lot of its faults.

Persona 5 > Berseria (close though)

not really interested in the others besides maybe Breath of the Wild eventually
ISFJ. A VN, Anime, Japanese food and video game guy. Dubs > Subs. MajiKoi the best ever.

It's Zelda, purely due to how large a time commitment it's been. It has a way of absorbing my thoughts. You start to see the cracks once you get 60, 75, 100 hours in, where the game could be improved in iterative sequels, what should have been changed in the final version, but the game never falls in on itself. The core gameplay loop of hunting around for shrines or using your resources to tackle encounters, the excitement of swapping stories with friends or experiencing the game through someone else's eyes remains consistent the entire game. The only other times I've been this enamored with a Zelda world were with Link to the Past, because I was 5 and that game seemed as impenetrable to my young eyes as Breath of the Wild is large, and Majora's Mask, because a clockwork world where I have infinite time to get to know the ins and outs of a city and its inhabitants is the entire reason I adore adventure games. It's a special game for sure.

I know I'll enjoy other games more when I get around to them. Nier and Trails the 3rd are games I know I'll love just as much if not more than Zelda. Persona 5 retains everything I loved about Persona 3 + 4 but added more urgency and heart. When I wrap that up I'm sure it'll compare to Zelda. There are other great games I enjoyed almost as much as Zelda. Torment follows up on one of my favourite games ever, and is just as weird. What Remains of Edith Finch and Night in the Words are excellent character stories with detailed worlds I loved exploring. So yeah, it's been a pretty great year. But man. That Zelda.

Literally Mass Effect Andromeda lol.

P5 is the obvious winner, but very high props to Nier, and to Berseria, the first truly great Tales game since......the first Nier came out, lol.

Only played P5 so far which was pretty great aside from lack of amazing cast chemistry/interaction/etc. Want to get Nier 2 at some point. Don't have anything to play Zelda.

I haven't played any of the titles on the list. Instead Mobius Final Fantasy is the only game which has kept me busy (whenever I have time) since its Steam-release earlier this year.

I disagree because BotW is literal god mode...

However I'll say this. With how good KH 0.2 is, for that short of a game, and it being pretty much just a yeh demo for III, it 100% locks up KH III for game of the year when it comes out in like 2025....

BotW does look like it could be kinda neat, but I have a hard time believing I would really care about a Zelda game. None have been bad of what I've played, but none really get me invested in anything. I liked Twilight Princess, but that could be because Midna carries that game.

Honestly this year's been fucking stellar so far, can't remember the last time there's been this many legitimate GOTY contenders.

Well, it's not a Zelda game so....

I think it was 2013 Inquisition came out. It was the best game, but I remember there being like 4 or 5 games that year I wouldn't have been pissed if they won.

This year is BotW in a landslide.

Not wrong, but there's nothing I can do that's worse than thinking Andromeda, a 3/10 game I 100% completed because I guess I'm a masochist, is GotY, so.... I'm content with that kniwledge.
