How to Watch It?

I remember watching the original 12 episodes about 3-5 years back. I have a general sense of what was going on (a crazy thing in ep 3 or 4 turned the show on its head, then a lot of Akemi Homura stuff near the end). I never got around to watching the movies though, so I'm kinda starting off from scratch again. Apparently the first two are retellings of the show.

I'm just throwing a poll out there. Netflix has everything up there. I know for sure I'm watching the third, but are the two other movies better versions of the original show? I put a third option, just in case I'm curious about any easter eggs or extra stuff the series doesn't show, but I may want to catch.

Don't do option 1 unless you just really want to watch everything. The first two movies are retellings though as you said, so I don't think there's a need to watch those and the TV series. I never watched movies 1 and 2, so I can't say how they compare.

What I wonder is if the movies change things like Evangelion's movies did. The first movie didn't redo much, but I know the second threw in a new character and even changed what was going on with Asuka. Kind of like how FMA: Brotherhood or Hellsing: Ultimate did things. Blow through similar things really quickly before following the manga more closely.

The way the reviews mention is Magica doesn't change anything, just changes the pacing to flow way better. I didn't see anything wrong with the series though. It was pretty dark and didn't dwell on things.

There are no major changes. I think there's like 1 or 2 scenes which are added or taken away, but it's definitely nothing like how the Eva movies worked.

I'll get to this around 8, when I'm done studying. Looks like the episodes are the way to go.
"Misguided mortals, you'll burn with me! Spirit of man cannot be freed!" - Black Sabbath, When Death Calls
I feel like the first 2 movies fixed the pacing problems the series had

So I enjoyed them more

Rebellion (the 3rd movie) is incredible though

Sequel when
Watched it recently with just the movies and I felt like it was paced a thousand times better for it. Movies really trim the fat and you don't really lose anything except for just one thing that makes more sense if you saw the series. ( The dream )
Let the voice of love take you higher,
With this gathering power, go beyond even time!
Magia...good god. I love it. One benefit of the episodes is I know that's the last thing I will hear nearly each time.
"Misguided mortals, you'll burn with me! Spirit of man cannot be freed!" - Black Sabbath, When Death Calls
Would watch the movies if I were you, just for the new experience. They have some great new music too (Mirai is awesome).

Looking back, it's not a shock that Mami dies in a few episodes. She's got quite an arrogant streak. Not like the redhead, but damn if she isn't like, " I got this crap" all the time. This show has a great sense for being 75% happy/25% distressing.

FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY! Those bastards. Saving that switch flip for tomorrow. I'd rather not have a nightmare.
"Misguided mortals, you'll burn with me! Spirit of man cannot be freed!" - Black Sabbath, When Death Calls
It's only not a shock if you already know what type of show it is going in.

People expecting a standard (albeit, slightly weird) magical girl show wouldn't even think to expect one of the seemingly main characters getting decapitated
I remember feeling a lot more affected by the scene before. Maybe it's because I assumed they showed everything in graphic detail.

Ah well, Episode 4 doesn't fuck around with the gravity of the situation. Happy time over.
"Misguided mortals, you'll burn with me! Spirit of man cannot be freed!" - Black Sabbath, When Death Calls
i enjoyed the show, but was too embarrassed to recommend it to others

mostly because of the copious quantities of over the top anime girl crying and squeaking

had no idea there were movies!
You did indeed stab me in the back. However, you are only level one, whilst I am level 50. That means I should remain uninjured.

Red Garden does this exact same thing, but 10x worse. It's like scream porn or something.

But that's the best part
Nothing quite like watching for the first time, but at least you seem to have forgotten enough for it to still impact.

Rebellion should be the real treat.

Going back and watching this makes me think, "How did I not recognize these actors when playing Ateiler and Persona 5 when they were all here first?" Then again, some of them were in DanganRonpa, and I never noticed either.
"Misguided mortals, you'll burn with me! Spirit of man cannot be freed!" - Black Sabbath, When Death Calls
Uhhhh, wait, are you watching in English?

Madoka's dub is one of them famously bad ones.
**** Netflix
I always watch dub, aside from cases where the direction is bad or shitty acting. I can easily tell when the dialogue is stilted as fuck or the actors are playing people they aren't suited for (Love Hina was really bad, even with good actors. I couldn't watch it after the sub was so good). You could say Madoka and Sayaka's English actors are SQUEE levels annoying, but they don't act like shit. At least Sayaka doesn't. I've heard far worse dubs in my life (Get Backers, Shuffle, most late 90s/early 2000 games, Arc Rise Fantasia). This doesn't even come close to that crap.

I would like to ignore this becoming a dub/sub thing. I get enough of that stupid debate shit on other boards and Youtube.

I meant avoid...goddammit GameFAQs. Stupid edit button went away.

Watching the dub means you get the cake song dubbed and it's one of the best scenes in anime
LtM have you seen the dub? Obviously it does have that reputation, but based on the three or so scenes I've seen it actually seemed fine or even good to me.

(To clarify, I am asking because I am curious and place noticeably more value in the opinions of Board 8 Anime than in the anime community as a whole on the subject of dubs.)

Episode 12 was great, or whichever it was with Homura destroying the city lol.
Fuhlt nicht durch dich Sarastro Todesschmerzen,
So bist du meine Tochter nimmermehr-- eeeeeeeeeeeeeeehr.
Not gonna make it a thing, just surprised. It's usually an immediate turnoff for most people.

I have, just the main series, not the movies. I've watched Madoka 4 times now and once was dubbed. It made me more.....uncomfortable than anything else.
**** Netflix
By the way, I was wondering if there would be any interest in a "Strife rewatches and discusses favorite anime" kind of topic (or just keep this one as it once Madoka is over). I actually started with a couple other shows, but I have a huge backlog of things I'd be interested in watching again. Just checking if a topic is something cares about.
"Misguided mortals, you'll burn with me! Spirit of man cannot be freed!" - Black Sabbath, When Death Calls
This show has already turned the corner, but they insist on the creepy "light and dark" shots and the extreme close-ups of Kyubei. These guys do not quit, even when they've grabbed people by the balls.
"Misguided mortals, you'll burn with me! Spirit of man cannot be freed!" - Black Sabbath, When Death Calls
Oh. God. Now Sayaka's went berserk. Just what Madoka needs right now: more potentially dead friends.
"Misguided mortals, you'll burn with me! Spirit of man cannot be freed!" - Black Sabbath, When Death Calls
You've got more restraint than me watching at this pace.

Sayaka's #1
**** Netflix
I actually wanted to finish in one day, but school assignments and junk. On weekends, I can bust out a lot more episodes.

See, I didn't even know that show existed, and now I feel like I'm not supposed to watch it

What are you doing!!
You did indeed stab me in the back. However, you are only level one, whilst I am level 50. That means I should remain uninjured.
Saving you from a show that Madoka surpassed in every way.

"If you ever feel like dying for the sake of the universe, call me."

You goddamn furry, cat, rabbit thing. I feel like throwing up.
"Misguided mortals, you'll burn with me! Spirit of man cannot be freed!" - Black Sabbath, When Death Calls
It's rough buddy.

I've never even heard of Red Garden, certainly a striking art style.

If you finish up Madoka and are looking for something similar, there are a lot of shitty copycats out there. The only two that reallu managed to stand out are Yuki Yuuna is a Hero and Magical Girl Raising Project. Neither are as good, but they're both still solid.
**** Netflix
Only three more episodes, then the movie. I think I will finish tomorrow.
"Misguided mortals, you'll burn with me! Spirit of man cannot be freed!" - Black Sabbath, When Death Calls
Holy Groundhog Day, Batman.

*Throws bombs everywhere*
"Misguided mortals, you'll burn with me! Spirit of man cannot be freed!" - Black Sabbath, When Death Calls
I finished the series. Soon, Rebellion.
"Misguided mortals, you'll burn with me! Spirit of man cannot be freed!" - Black Sabbath, When Death Calls
yesss Rebellion
Um...this is just like the intro episode. It is kinda creepy.
"Misguided mortals, you'll burn with me! Spirit of man cannot be freed!" - Black Sabbath, When Death Calls
I should rewatch Rebellion one day.

It's... quite the interesting watch.
xp1337: Don't you wish there was a spell-checker that told you when you a word out?
I've watched Rebellion more times than the show!

Drove 3 hours to Tennessee to see it in theaters.

Oops, I spoke too soon. It is different.

MY BRAIN!

Cake song best song
Kyubei...distraught? If this movie does anything right, that was it. I was waiting to see that moment. Everything else was a total mindfuck.
"Misguided mortals, you'll burn with me! Spirit of man cannot be freed!" - Black Sabbath, When Death Calls
So am I able to make a "vindicated" post here? I actually can't tell.
Congratulations to BK_Sheikah00 , this year's guru to achieve contest enlightenment!
Depends on what you're vindicating, I think?

I'm finishing homework, so post whatever you want. The movie was fucking great, if a little long and too nutso.

I'm going to watch Psycho-Pass next. I never got around to the second season, but I remember thinking the first was pretty impressive.

Edit: And of course Netflix doesn't have it anymore. I'll just find another way.
"Misguided mortals, you'll burn with me! Spirit of man cannot be freed!" - Black Sabbath, When Death Calls
First series is still great, same writer as Madoka!

Second....don't watch it.

I've heard that a lot. Is it really that bad?
