It's more that I think the relative importance of certain issues has shifted. This is probably the wrong way to look at it, but if you took an average of my stance on the politically left/right scale it would probably fall somewhere in the middle or slightly to the left (which is still the case now). However, right now I consider social issues (which I was always pretty clearly liberal on) to be disproportionately more important than they have been in the past, when I placed them on more equal footing with other issues.
There's also the fact that for better or worse, "left" and "right" in modern American political discussion don't strictly refer to political beliefs, but also have some association with the Democratic and Republican parties respectively.
