How often do you use subtitles?

Been using subtitles all of the time since my wife is ESL and most films are English

It used to be rarely but now its pretty much always, even for shows shes not watching. Just got used to it and helps me pay attention to the dialogue more.

If there are subtitles i tend to focus on those instead of whatever else is happening on the screen

If its in English then no.
Yes, always.
Only if it's non-english material.

I used to throw them on for particularly dense movies, but I've started keeping them on for everything lately.
It's necessary for live-action non-English, so of course for that.

But for anything else, it throws off the timing of the scenes, both for dramatic moments and comedic moments, by being able to see the information before the delivery. It muddles the director's intent a bit in key sequences, so I try to avoid it when possible.

This. At that point I might as well just read a book.

I'm also so averse to spoilers that it aggravates me when I can read ahead and see what a character will say before they say it. Ruins delivery and punchlines a lot.
I don't kill... but I don't lose either.
Always. I have a hard time catching everything people are saying and it just makes everything more enjoyable for me.
I'm not sure who this MI guy is but he sounds sexy.

This almost exactly

Playing: Final Fantasy VIII Remastered
Reading: Memoirs of a Geisha (12)
Im a little bit hard of hearing. I use subtitles on most movies and tv shows on DVD and streaming stuff. Also with video games.
For non-English stuff, and maybe I'll turn them on for a second if I can't for the life of me figure the hell out what someone just said.

Yep, this has happened to me more than once. I always try to keep them off.

No I have ears
Yes usually, it actually helps me focus more on what's happening. The opposite of distracting
DPOblivion was far more determined than me.
The only time in recent memory I can remember putting on subtitles was Season 2 of Luke Cage. We had so much trouble with Bushmaster's super thick Jamaican accent/dialect.
Change is weird.
almost always if possible.

it makes it easier to watch things with bad audio balancing, makes it easier to follow the dialogue without potentially missing anything or statements being unclear, I can turn the volume down really low if needed. oh yeah, and accents. helps a lot with bad accents.
all the rest weren't so unfortunate

Yeah because English is not my first language.
So why we exist? What happens when we stop existing?
Nice job Hylian Knight 3, you were better than me in the Guru Contest!
Movies yes, TV shows no

I got into the habit in my teens because I listened to a bunch of audio commentaries and I still wanted to follow along with the dialogue. It's been my default ever since

normally no but I accidentally put subtitles on while watching the simpsons and I'm legit catching jokes better or stuff I didn't hear
No except for non-English stuff, obviously.

For the folks who say they have trouble hearing - I used to be in the exact same situation. A decent audio set up and/or a clear voice setting works absolute wonders. Movies especially (but plenty of TV too) is mixed with the expectation of being listened to at movie theater levels of volume, and vocal audio gets totally crushed when you listen at anything lower. It's exacerbated by lower quality sound solutions (built-in TV speakers being the absolute worst) that can't replicate the sound correctly to begin with. Clear voice settings (available on most modern TVs and sound systems) help enormously with that issue.

I never did, but the past two girls I dated have subtitles on 24/7. Went from hating it to being fine with it. I now immediately put subtitles on every game I play, and don't mind it for tv or film.

Except comedies - I do find myself catching some jokes I might not have gotten before, but sometimes it ruins the joke because I've read it before the actors sell it with their delivery.
