Is Bravely Second worth playing before this.

I know you probably don't need to story-wise or anything but is it a good game

I actually never got around to Second, I was thinking of getting it while I was in Japan but never went through with it (same happened to FE:Fates)

BD2 Prologue beated... wait what is that accent trying to be

It's good enough, though it repeats a lot of the same locations as BD (and considering how much BD repeats that's pretty bad).

Is it just me or is the performance in this game... pretty bad? RPGs are the one genre where it doesn't bother me too much but there's a delay on the menus that doesn't feel too good. Still enjoying it
What is this, some kind of joke?!
Go, then. There are other worlds than these.
I coulda sworn there was a Bravely Default 2, like, years ago

I still gotta go back and actually finish the first one :\

Yeah, its definitely noticeable. Its not a dealbreaker or anything but a nuisance for sure.
I've been meaning to play the first one. I own it but never actually played it.

Still hold up?

I just started the original game about a week ago. There's too much backtracking, but the annoyance is at least drastically reduced by the fact that you can turn off random battles whenever you want. I just finished chapter 3.

If I had one complaint about the design, it's that a lot of the regular mobs are way more dangerous than the bosses, as most of the bosses follow a set and easily exploitable pattern that means you just sit there cycling the same turns over and over again until you outlast them. There are areas where you can have 3 characters being crippled by a debilitating status you can't reliably block on the first turn of the battle, before anyone even moves. This can get especially bad if the enemy gets a first strike, and some of them just do absurd damage for the areas you find them.

The only boss to actually give me trouble was DeRosa - I had to go out of my way to learn Abate Lightning (Which is super easy to get - level 2 summoner). Once I had that, I was able to set up a pattern of 10+ 2-handed attacks at once --> everyone reequips shields and defaults twice to tank his counterattacks ---> everyone heals up to full on the next turn when he can't move --> repeat until dead. This roughly sums up most of the bosses so far. His charm attack was a nuisance, but it wasn't gamebreaking.

Also, I don't trust Airy at all~

It's a pretty good game that so far hasn't pulled many punches with storyline elements, with RPG mechanics that are both innovative and lacking at the same time. They honestly work better for random encounters than they do for boss fights, as the former tend to require more active amounts of strategy. Most boss fights so far have been 20+ minute slogs where I'm just waiting for them to die already. It doesn't take particularly long to figure out their patterns.

yeah this is why I don't like the first one and am not particularly interested in the sequel
while you slept, the world changed
I LOVED the original but never got around to Second. This one just hasn't interested me much from the what I've seen for some reason. I hope it's good though and I may pick it up later. I don't think the art style made the jump to console very successfully but maybe you get used to it after playing for a while.

Shit, I didn't realize the Exploration feature only counts during Sleep Mode with the game on. I typically end my sessions by y'know... save & quitting so I missed out on my first night's sleep worth of Exploration =|

also lame that it doesn't count while you're playing the game either, it's all specifically only with the game on sleep mode

Yeah I made the same mistake, I usually close out the game when Im done

never again
There seems to be.. Quite the balance issue in chapter 4.

I ended chapter 3 thinking I was slightly over leveled.

There are world map enemies in chapter 4 that can occasionally score outright OHKOs on most of my characters and always go first.

Um.. Ok.

I'm surprisingly enjoying this "card" game so far, first batch of available duelists in town beated

[Chapter 1 casino subquest job] Gambler beated... boy that was a challenge, mostly because of Bard v2 good lord all the counters, particularly phys damage+ buffs whenever hit stacking crazy and yet I can't easily do the same because Gambler counters Bard skills

... now what in the world this job's Specialty... I need numbers here

Bernard beated... woah

[story following spoilers] Totally caught off guard by this Castor reveal, his character being a royal childhood friend of Gloria was convincing, looking down on the other party members but apparently warming up to them... there was the super playing nice part that was weird but not suspicious like this. I figured we'd be in the dungeons what with being able to see the entrance from town but definitely didn't picture it happening like this! Castor's advisor being portrayed as a another backstabber like Halcyonia's Prime Minister was a good red herring, honestly after the Prologue chapter it seemed a bit eyerolling to have another backstabber in the next kingdom but good show!

Im just starting chapter 1 now and looking over the abilities my current jobs have...is White Mages drain attack passive as good as it sounds? Because Im considering grinding that ability out to give to all my physical attackers if it is.
Checking... it seems to consistently give 20% damage inflicted converted to HP. Using my Master Freelancer Seth on some mobs I had a few screenshots...

regular hit 345-dmg = 69-hp
vulnerable hit 418-dmg = 84-hp
critical vuln hit 690-dmg = 138-hp

keeping in mind it converts Attack commands only as stated

also somebody plz burn down the Wiswald Woods

Hmm, thats not terrible, but not crazy. Well see, Im grinding Freelancer to max on everyone first to get the JP boost.

Food + consecutive battles are busto
Damn, just finished watching Clemp's story video on the original game and it just reminded me how much I loved it and now I'm thinking about getting this one lol. But... Should I play Second first?

No connections on anything so far!

First 2 asterisks of chapter 2 down and I continue to really like their characterizations and stories so far sans Serene who well whatever at least she has Dag with her.

Neat with these two asterisks since you can do them either order and I'm playing side-by-side with my brother so we went different ways and got to see how they differ and come together.

Also hilarious how our play-styles differ, I was getting obliterated by the the physical attack barraging boss of in my path, but immediately nuked down the healing one that my brother was having difficulty witting down. Then on the flip side my brother tanked the boss I was having difficulty with like nothing was going on and gradually beat them with ease.

(this actually matches our different play-styles in most games where i'm a rusher and he's a camper)

Man why would anyone hate Ringabel? He's great!
TheRock ~ I had a name, my father called me Blues.
well that was always my impression from the SMFFFC threads!... among the people who like Bravely in there I mean, Ringabel had a lot of vocal haters. I think I remember that being the case in old BD days too with me being confused then

Not as much time to play today but man at this point I'm starting to think they really did just remove the dungeon map feature - I know one of the demos had it so I looked back and realized it was removed for Demo 2 but yeah definitely in Demo 1... so at some point they decided to scrap it? I don't remember any mention in the Feedback Video about this

I suspected it's just hidden behind a Job ability but I mean I'd have expected it by this point of the game I mean c'mon

Oof. Some of the side quests are good in this, but some are really, really bad. Literally just ping-ponging back and forth between areas with no actual content.
I'm more tired of some sidequests that really go hard in redeeming some bad guys

not that they're a plentiful number but any times it happens it's like geez slow your rolls there, yeah you got some complicated baddies but you don't gotta lump on the praise like this!

definitely a trope that gets overplayed in japanese rpgs a lot

(although also plz don't ever give me another sidequest of finding things in Wiswald Woods, I sword I would never return)

Just got the game, just got the first set of asterisks. So far, it's not as immediately engaging as the previous two.
This is an alt.
jeeeeeeeeeeesus chapter 4 bosses, at least first one beated and good lord that was something fierce

although uh lmao this asterisk user is nowhere near as fleshed out as the rest, and this quest's whole Murder Mystery plot was really... really bad and so not a mystery at all, the summation was sad to watch

laughed my damn ass off after beating Marla she slits her own throat... and the next dialogue it's just completely ignored and the party & Savalon officials just go on talking about working together

Ive heard this becomes an issue as you go on further in the game and tbh does not sound like much fun.
yeahhhh I'm cool with Counters as a way to slow your pace down and make you have to test the waters but... I'm not sold on the execution, when you're at the point that every action you could make gets countered it's just enraging

doesn't help that details of the counters aren't stored anywhere and if you got increased battle speed on you'll very likely miss what the heck happened.... let alone if something happened during a set of Brave actions
