Was just thinking that right after the contest we ended up having some really incredible years for video games.

Feel like my favorites are 2017 followed by 2019 but admittedly I havent gone through everything I wanted to in 2022 or 2023 yet
I live on, THROUGH THIS SEASHELL!

2017 is my favorite year in gaming period

2023 has been really good too though. Probably takes the #2 spot here

They all blend together

I guess 2019 would be the one because of Outer Wilds and RE2

I have a lot of positive memories of being cooped up during lockdown playing TLOU2 and FF7R though so 2020 would probably be up there too.
Not to be confused with XIII_Minerals.
2017 currently, but I haven't played BG3 yet, and that could sway things.

Breath of the Wild
Super Mario Odyssey
Ys VIII
Persona 5
Nier Automata
Divinity Original Sin 2
A Hat in Time
Hollow Knight
Dragon Quest 11
Yakuza 0

All make for one hell of a year, not to mention other good stuff like Xenoblade 2, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Resident Evil 7.
All the stars in the sky are waiting for you.
2017 has nine games in my all-time top 100, which is insane. No other year has more than six. Admittedly, two of those were released later in the US, but that still leaves seven.

Nier: Automata
What Remains of Edith Finch
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Super Mario Odyssey
Hollow Knight
The Great Ace Attorney 2: Resolve (2021 in US)
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
Prey
Dragon Quest XI (2018 in US)

And if you just want to go off US release, Persona 5 and Yakuza 0 slip in instead

2017 is stacked. 2023 is a not-so-distant second though.

This is actually tough! I think the only weak year is 2021 but even that year had some amazing games.

I think it's a toss-up between 2018 or 2019 for me, leaning towards the latter:
Resident Evil 2
Devil May Cry 5
Devotion
Pathologic 2
Metro Exodus
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
Sekiro
Control
The Outer Worlds
Plague Tale
Days Gone
Outer Wilds
Disco Elysium
Bloodstained
Blair Witch

Like damn that's a lot!
I've decided to put my fears behind me. I'm not going back.
Halloween 2023 - https://letterboxd.com/crossbonesgt/list/halloween-2023/
we waited 22 years for a worthy follow up to sonic 3 & knuckles, so 2017
I'm the original TomNook7 from the old days. The other guy is just TomNook. Know your TomNooks.
I guess 2018, since that's the year SSBU released

2019 has Outer Wilds, Disco Elysium, Slay the Spire, and Bug Fables.

year of the ever

I've gotta go with 2018 here. I mean, who could forget classics like Celeste, Return of the Obra Dinn, MUSCLE WORLD, 0_abyssalSomewhere, Charge Cycles, LONG LIVE THE AXE, Rym 9000, 10 Mississippi, Donkey Kong's Revenge, Rising Dusk, Ludus Antioch, The Loss Levels, or You Are Jeff Bezos?

Other highlights include:
  • The first chapter of DELTARUNE launching under the guise of a survey on Halloween
  • 428: Shibuya Scramble finally being translated into English
  • The launch of the Frog Detective franchise, catapaulting Grace Bruxner into the Australian mainstream
  • The initial release of Bacon The Game, one of the greatest mobile games of all time, which continues to be expanded today
  • Five incredible games by the enigmatic spacepuppy (the phone rings, comfort zone, night thoughts, tip-toeing around an empty house, and quietly)
  • The creation of entries IV through X in the BINKY series (as well as at least four excellent fan games, including Binky CVIII: Binky gets 500 vases in the mail)
  • Probably the most complex Bitsy game ever, almanac of girlswampwar territory & the _girls who swim as fertilizer through the warm soil cloaking the roots of the glorious tree of eugenics (giving birth to a black hole in a walmart parking lot at 1am)
  • All of caeth's initial forays into the Bitsy medium, investigate, Kleus music, and Their Share

Truly a stellar year for the medium!
2019 is stacked and is the first year ever to deliver a new favorite all-time game for me (Outer Wilds) so I kinda have to go with that

It is true that since 2017 though gaming has been really really good, I thought 2008-2016 was a pretty significant dry spell for the medium
I couldn't tell you what games came out what year off the top of my head, but this year has been pretty good.

2017 is ridiculously loaded.

Definitely 2017, especially if going by US release date. All of the following games are excellent:
Yakuza 0 (US) / Yakuza Kiwami 2 (JP)
Xenoblade 2
Fire Emblem Heroes
NieR: Automata
Persona 5 (US)
Danganronpa V3
Super Mario Odyssey
Tales of Berseria (US)

I guess 2018, since that's the year SSBU released

Bells, bells, bells!
2020 has FF7R, Yakuza LaD, AC:NH, TLoU2, Crash 4, and Miles Morales so probably that.
