No sound on monitor or TV

Board 8 » No sound on monitor or TV
A few days ago I've stopped getting sound through either the TV or monitor my PC is connected to (both through HDMI). I've literally tried everything I can think of to restore the sound - checking all connections, uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, getting any and all available upgrades (even upgrading to Windows 11) - nothing brings it back. It is especially frustrating on the TV side of things. What could be the issue here?
I've decided to put my fears behind me. I'm not going back.

Do you replace the HDMI cable?

have you proven that something else can output sound using those HDMI cables to those devices

Are you getting sound any other way, e.g. if it's a laptop then right from it, or any other external peripheral like speakers?

...is it possible for sound cards to just crap out?

Yeah I have speakers that work just fine (and headphones work too) it's just the HDMI sound specifically not working.

If you're getting sound everywhere except through the HDMI port, could it be that the HDMI port itself stopped working? I get sound on my PC through USB headphones and on one of my older computers the USB port itself just broke one day.

That is a possibility but just the sound aspect? That's so specific if true!

Also my PC is only a year and a half old

yeah if there are other HDMI ports it's worth trying one. I don't know anything and I'd be in the "googling to try and find an answer" mode too... ideally it is some random port because if not it's what, some driver associated with HDMI? or if there's some aspect of the sound card associated with HDMI (if that's even a thing)... very strange!
I feel like this is the kind of thing computer stores cant figure out nowadays, is that true

Is it disabled in sound devices

It is nowhere to be found in sound devices strangely enough

make sure you can see disabled devices

Yup I checked all of that already it's just not there

Have you checked Device Manager? They might be disabled in there

Yup did all that, it's not there either in disabled or enabled

Where it shows the devices did you right click in the blank area and check show disabled devices and show disconnected devices

If you make a Linux USB/DVD and boot into that, you would likely be able to tell if its a hardware issue or a windows issue. If Linux has no sound either, your hardware has an issue. If there is sound, maybe windows needs to be reinstalled.

I also had a weird issue over 10 years ago, where my mouse was going bad and causing windows to make disconnection noises and eventually all my USB ports would stop working until I rebooted. I had my computer all boxed up to send for repairs...until I heard the same noises using that mouse on my mom's laptop that I was borrowing. I changed the mouse and I'm still using the same computer today. So sometimes computers do weird things.
Thank you, that's a really good suggestion, I'm going to try that in the morning

Wow, so made a Linux boot, and yeah the sound is restored both on my monitor and TV! So I guess it is a Windows issue after all. So I will reinstall Windows next.

Yeah, that did the trick! All's fixed now! Thanks everyone

Nice. I'm glad that my idea worked.
Whilst I couldn't offer any advice, I followed this topic with interest. Glad it's fixed. Good work all!
Well done to azuarc for finishing 67 places above me in the 2020 GOTD Guru Contest!
Glad to hear the problem was resolved, though still a bit unsettling that it needed a full reinstall... I don't know shit about Linux so I would've been boned on testing that out too.
Was going to say reinstall windows. I had a similar issue when i switched from windows 11 to windows 10 on my new laptop. It was something to do with the sound drivers not being supported on windows 10 so no matter what you did there was no way to get it to work. In the end I had to just install windows 11 again.

I don't know too much about Linux either, but I figured this didn't require anything other than making the USB/DVD. Once that was done, you basically just have to boot up without installing, go to a web browser and watch a youtube video. Since we just needed to know if the sound worked or not, it's an easy thing to test, with minimal Linux knowledge required.
I'm like mid-tier when it comes to computer stuff so I'm usually not too worried about trying things like that. I find it's actually pretty hard to totally fuck up your computer with how many warnings and such you're given at every turn.

Yeah I remember spending a summer (I think it was 2013) using Linux through a flash drive because Windows corrupted and I just didn't have the time to figure out how to salvage all my files before reinstalling. I had my trepidations at first but I ultimately found it very easy to use.
