Thank you.

That said. Do they get more interesting? My limited experience makes me believe that they are likely to be a lot worse than Y0 and Y7/IW
Haaa... well most of them are pulled straight from Yakuza 1, where they were not interesting at all.

There are about ten or so that are brand new, as I recall, and are up to similar standards as 0's.

I played Like a Dragon first, and found it to be an excellent introduction to the series.
This is also valid.

Don't get me wrong. 0 is my first choice, but there are other good choices for where to start the series. Heck, I started at 4.

The "most correct" answer is to time travel back to 2005 so you can play every game in order as it comes out so you don't get burnout.

Yes, 0 has sly reference to future games, and a lot of people got a lot of emotions given how certain established characters are "different" in 0, but personally, I think it's fascinating to see people who started with these characters in 0, then learn what they become later. It's still a valid experience.

I've beaten all of them going K1 > 0 > K2 ... 7, and K1 was by far my least favorite due to just how awful some of the boss fights are. The penultimate fight is the worst in the series, I hated it that much.

You are typing these words out and in the previous breath trying to convince new players to start with it.

I know of people who started the series with Kiwami and stopped because of the Chapter 3 boss fight and how they couldn't get through it.

You have to get out of the mindset of someone who believes everyone is just guaranteed to play every game in a series. Very few people have that kind of time.

Some people start with 0 and skip to 7. Some people literally play 0 and stop, and that's fine, so long as they get to experience some of the best the series has to offer.

Don't recommend people start a series at the worst game to "just get it over with" because these games are LARGE GAMES.

Question your own motives if you feel telling someone "start with the worst game in the series" is a good idea.

(It's not even the worst, IMO, and even then "worst" in terms of this series is a matter of 7/10.)
CyricZ He/him
http://twitch.tv/cyricz42
The chronological order of the main series is:

Yakuza 0
Yakuza Kiwami (a remake of the first game)
Yakuza Kiwami 2 (a remake of the second game)
Yakuza 3
Yakuza 4
Yakuza 5
Yakuza 6: The Song of Life
Yakuza: Like a Dragon
Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name
Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth

How does Like a Dragon fit in it?
"Like a Dragon" is the current series name in the west. It's just replacing the series title. In Japan, the series has always been known as "Like a Dragon".

Are there spinoffs?
Yes. First, there is the Judgment series of two games.
  • Judgment takes place after Yakuza 6 but references very little from that game.
  • Lost Judgment takes place after Yakuza: Like a Dragon and references an unavoidable plot point from that game, but it's not remotely the biggest spoiler of that game.

Honestly the Judgment series can be a good entry point to the series if you want a more modern game to start with.

There's also Yakuza: Dead Souls, a tough-to-get spinoff from the PS3 which is set between Yakuza 4 and Yakuza 5 but is non-canon and is about zombies. Don't worry about that one until you're WAY deep into the series.

There are also some entirely unrelated spinoffs:
Like a Dragon Ishin! is a spinoff set in the 1800's where you play as historical characters that have faces from the main series.

Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise is another spinoff only available on the PS4 which is ostensibly just a Fist of the North Star game in the Yakuza style, only many of the characters in the game use Yakuza series voice actors.

Do I really need to learn that tiles game whateveritisnamed that had a manga with SSJ Hitler?
Mahjong is a fun game and if you want to learn how to play I can teach you. If you want to teach yourself, check out Mahjong Soul as it has a decent tutorial.

Is GamePass missing any game?
I don't think so, but granted I'm not on GamePass so I can't confirm. There was a time where some of the games dropped off GamePass but they might be back on?

Neither of those are true. All my guides but one are my own and I remain the legal owner of my work. This was what GameFAQs was foundationally built upon, and that has yet to change, and we will know if it does.

I can choose to destroy my own life's work at any time.

But given the gravity of that last sentence, I'm exercising my own right to be cautious and not reactive, because it is MY life's work and one thing I won't suffer is people trying to use me and leveraging my work as revenge for the boards being gutted.

I think the combat in the Judgement games is my favorite in the series.
That's basically a function of it being some of their latest in action combat, particularly when it comes to the Dragon Engine. Yakuza 6 and Kiwami 2 were rough on action combat, and then it seems they kinda "got it" when they moved on to Judgment, then Lost Judgment, then Like a Dragon Gaiden which is also fun and awesome.

I think Lost Judgment might be the only one in the franchise to have a full blown expansion with the Kaito Files, but I could be wrong.
You're correct on that one. Kaito Files is the only multi-chapter DLC story content they've ever released and it's some of the best short-form writing they've ever done.

So yeah to answer the previous question, the Judgment series is action combat like the earlier LAD games combined with detective-style minigames, things like chasing, tailing, lock-picking, eavesdropping, and in LJ you add things like parkouring and infiltrating. Some of the minigames hit and some of them don't. For the most part, they do tend to overstay their welcome, but are not so bad as to ruin the experience.

0 is my personal recommendation for starting. It's a great sampling of the action, tone, melodrama, humor, and side content that the series is famous for. It requires no previous knowledge to engage in, as it's a prequel to the main storyline, so it exists quite self-contained.

It's individual page views, so likely a few from the same person, and yes it also counts people without accounts.

So what are our confirmed deaths so far?

We have Gyrich and Gambit absolutely 99% for realsies (that 1% being the margin of error inherent in every comic book death). 90% certain Bolivar Trask (unless he can be powered back up and even then, is life as a hidden Sentinel really being yourself).

And a very good chance that Sebastian Shaw, Dazzler, and Squidboy are dead from the Genosha attack based on Jean's psychic whatevers. Callisto also had a picture of her in memoriam so she's on the sliding scale towards deadness.

Am I missing anyone named?

Hiding bodies is simpler than you might expect. As long as they're in a location where Garrett would be invisible (completely darkened Light Gem), they're invisible unless they're touched.

One of the earliest things to learn is that guards in Thief games are bliiiind as heeeellll. Or perhaps Garrett just has a more finely tuned visual acuity than they do.

But they have really great ears and they can detect when footsteps are yours versus when they're the footsteps of other guards lol.
