yeah, no problems with summons here - just have an idea of what they are/what they can do. jeffrey's detailed them mostly as support with basic descriptions, which works, though there's also the route GANON took and trying to measure it by just 'final fantasy mage', leaving that to whatever you want to think. if it's part of what the character can do, go for it.

well, the easy answer is that if you don't fight... you lose. i mean ringouts are perfectly viable ways to win (and if anything, THOSE the most out of the legit wins) so if you actively choose to not fight, losing makes sense too. using an example here - if Jesse Custer made Superman utter the words "I quit," i'd would take that as a win for Custer, just as i'd take him telling Supes "Kill yourself" to be a win for him. you know you're in a fight, but if you don't want to win that's... entirely reasonable to allow. not every fight has to be kapow kablam after all, so we pretty much just disagree there. if the would-be battle ends up being like what happened with Darsh/Morrigan, so be it; that's a far better answer than going "NO! YOU TWO DON'T BE LIKE YOU ARE AND FIGHT!"
but yeah, characters once submitted in bold to being done = characters are done that's how they'll be through the contest. no need to do it now since we have 3 (technically 4 if anagram's gets fixed to... not be like it is) entries that seem to work and all are on roughly the same level too. like... the furthest sort of game-y thing i can think of that could work is if a character somehow powered up through the contest with said powerup clearly stated (e.g., 'he's a tournament specialist and gains a new power after each win, being in the order from the list below'), but i'd rather avoid that too for now. start with the simple format that doesn't make things too weird and if it takes off well, it's free to be experimented upon with written-in powerups, tag team matches, etc. but for now, yes, what the character starts as will be what he ends as, no midway powerup. (unless all of a sudden every character ends up being that way. in which case...) -- The King Wang. Listen up Urinal Cake. actually i disagree on the "wants to win" part - that opens itself to out of character behavior. like... if courage the cowardly dog were nominated, knowing he's in a fight would result in him bailing, not wanting to win. knowing there's a fight should be enough, especially when we're actually MAKING them after all. if a character is super powerful but doesn't want to actually fight then it lends itself to 'well, can the opponent win without fighting directly?' which i think is fine. of course that'd have its own set of problems - the issue of "Well, either they talk him out and win or they don't, pick a fight, and lose." but the idea is being forced to want to win always seemed... unnatural.
and yes, terrains will always be what decides fights a majority of the time. we've seen it in the spell contest too. with that said though, if we have a list of possible terrains and some that are favored, some that aren't, you can have a fight in the element for 2 people, or not a bad place for 1 of them. snake vs. sam fisher is more interesting in a place with stealth than on neutral after all, but snake vs. wolverine would suck on 'neutral', despite it being more interesting if you included stealth (even WITH the damn nose). if there's options, it'd help. like... i understand it exists for stuff like the good guys who may or may not want to insta-win (supes, flash) and not go all out, but i'd rather they be themselves. "Flash knows he's in a fight" leans on Flash being how he always would be. "Flash knows he's in a fight and wants to win" leans on GameFAQs Flash. after all, he wants to win. i do agree with nothing wrong for speed blitzes fundamentally and everything wrong with that it's usually not a balance made. Ichigo vs. Ryu Hayabusa isn't interesting because it's a case of "speed from 1 is better than speed from 2 and that's all that matters." that though ends up being a matter of scale - if Hayabusa had a more appropiate person to fight (e.g., movie Luke Skywalker) then it's better because the gap isn't as big and the other tricks come to play. they want to speed blitz, but it's not entirely possible. or if you have the classic speed blitz vs. tank, where the question is can he do it before he gets tagged, can he take a hit, etc. basically, i agree that 'knows they're in a fight' is enough because it lets the characters be themselves. i disagree with a speedblitz problem, because i neither see it as a problem nor do i think it's relevant for most people (most aren't Flash or Courage and will try to win if they're in a fight anyway). -- "Maybe it's a tentacle, molesting the planet itself. - Aschen Brodel. |

TRE - reading it over, seems fine honestly. assuming since nothing's really specified you mean to mean human akin to our world. don't really know anything about this guy - his personality or style, so that could be fleshed out, but fundamentally he seems reasonable. fleshing him out is an option if you want to make him focus on certain things (e.g., track opponents then start the cat summoning or something) but i see no problem there outright. personally i'd also see the long casting time relate to the number of cats summoned, but if you mean something different feel free to specify. mostly just details and character specifics remain, but that's obviously something that can be interp'd.
Jeffrey - badass. even though not everything is specified, it paints a really clear picture, tells us about him, and details on how he works. obviously you're free to flesh things out as you want (and who knows where we'll end up so it's nice that you've a range to play with), but i personally can't see any real problems here and rather like it a lot. viviff - <_<; i don't think i need to say much on magneto-but-not-magneto. i mean it could be a fun story detailing the life of someone who got a superhero/villain power in the real world (and had a zombie fairy do it) but... yeah. that boils down to less 'how does this character work' and more 'so what can magneto do', which goes against the spirit of the contest here. -- "Maybe it's a tentacle, molesting the planet itself. - Aschen Brodel. |

reading through them now. yours is uh... bluntly, bad. will explain. parameter-wise, extreme super strength, mach 10 speed (whether that's high or not remains to be seen), low durability. 500 million pounds is... 250,000 tons. for a reference point, the empire state building is about 365,000 tons, so you're saying she has the strength of one.
regarding Azure Cascade: you turned her to a one trick pony by definition. it's quite literally a "if this character can do it at all they can do it without any effort or problem." so it's a single question you're left with the equipment furthers this. like that 'cut anything' sword mixed with her skill and other equipment. who cares if you can do something that tanks nukes when you have bracers that would auto-absorb the magic that does that? who needs to bust a mountain when her sword can literally cut through it and in enough pieces cut through the mountain anyway? even the teleporting has a drain on this because she can be somewhere, then somewhere a little later, and a little later after that... which as a results lets her be there instantly. not the same as teleporting, but very close to it. and a cut-anything that's physical sword ends up running into the problem that most things are physical. psionics are one of the few that often aren't, and you have her immune to that. the limit on azure cascade being "needs to be aware of something to do it, so it's a conscious effort." ends up not REALLY being a limit. if she's on a terrain and can't see stuff, then nothing says she can't just repeatedly slice everything up instantly. and then you make the really powerful sword halfway useless (it's glass, but it can cut through anything, so as long as it's not hit on a bad angle it's fine) and the mountain-busting spell completely useless by putting in the dagger that literally hits with a comet's strength. as a result, you're left with 2 scenarios for her at all times: - if she can do something to win the fight, then should she be able to use this single move she wins. - if she can't do something to win the fight, then you go into the magic question. yet being able to do anything instantly, regardless of how long it would take, results in the magic not REALLY mattering due to the equips being able to do anything there + azure to access multi-step actions. the only one there that may be useful is teleportation, assuming she just doesn't want to superspeed there + superspeed there 2 = superspeed there 3. i assume she needs line of sight for azure to work at least. but that's... really not much of a limit because she'd just repeatedly use it. her strategy for combat doesn't entirely make sense either. unless she conciously makes and effort, the bracelets will absorb. therefore if there are magical barriers that aren't physical and cast in whatever her vacinity counts as they'd auto-absorb anyway. they'd have to already be up (since they aren't cast) but even then, she can literally 'find a way' by just being able to comet blast the ground, be under them, stab them under it. or she can drop them in a ditch into the mantle of the planet and bury them. summing it up, you basically made 2 big mistakes. 1) you turned her into the very definition of a one trick pony. it's hard to see how that'd actually be interesting in a fight. interesting to write about, but when combat comes around it's a single question that'll determine a good 99% of her fights. 2) you made her too perfect. you made her a glass cannon but in order to compensate gave her immunity to magic, psychic attacks, and a power that is exclusively enhanced by two things: strength and speed. and she can do anything so long as it's in her capabilities as far as strength and speed go. it doesn't matter what her opponent's capabilities are either, simply 'if it can be done then...' -- "Maybe it's a tentacle, molesting the planet itself. - Aschen Brodel. |

whoo good thing to wake up to.
by all means, there's still a spot. even ignoring that we haven't even gotten close to the needed number yet, it wouldn't make sense to stop at 16 entries either by the very nature of the contest; realistically you'll have someone as an outlier, characters who are good creations and nothing wrong with them, but based on everyone else create a mismatch of some sort. the more entries there are the bigger the pool the better things can get. i just pick 16 because i know it's asking for a lot. and if you want to make more than 1, go for it, just that for any contest-purpose there'd prob be a cap per person to avoid it being "5 people run this contest of 32" or something. i'm pretty glad to see there's interest and a few entries already to read. there should be some sort of point based system based on previous results and powers, destruction scales, etc. as for a point system - i'm trying to avoid that. i initially thought of something fate/stay night-y because there's a general level, it already has stats, and there's a certain amount of points to it. but within the hour i realized that's the wrong way to go with this; the entire point is freedom of creativity. a point system bogs you down and while that's helpful to establishing certain levels it changes the balance from "Make stuff up and we'll run a contest based on that" to "We're running a contest so make stuff up to fit it." i'm not even sure which results in something more balanced either as while you can have strict limits and, by definition, balanced characters it doesn't necessarily mean that in practice the situation's balanced. it's entirely dependent on if you were right or wrong by your setup and there is almost always a loophole. done this way where it's open and very loose, the content itself determine what you do. of course, and something that's also to worry about on other boards to, that does make it easier to troll or copy things that already exist (e.g., if i didn't know anything about Mistborn and someone made a "Fin", then 'whoops'). i think this way works better though and the pros outweigh that of a point or stat system. it's a gamble, but i think it has legs to it, especially if people are genuinely interested. it also helps bring in some people as not everyone's a big fan of the style of the MPFC contests as they've become since it's new and fresh. it alsowidens the available pool to "so are you interested in making stories or characters?" even if you aren't interested in a vs. contest, you can find creation much more interesting and an incentive to participate. besides, "destructive scale" is at times useful, at times not. fact is a city buster can job out to a guy who can barely take out a car under the right circumstances. the most broken things usually end up being not as a matter of level of destruction, but personell ones (Gae Bolg, Balefire, Shiki Ryougi's eyes) that just have these wildly broken effects and defended on the basis that it's not widespread damage. there's a connection between the scale and how powerful the character is in a lot of series, yes, especially in shounen. but you'll find that even in those you have outliers (Krillin's destructo-disc immediately comes to mind - a crapton weaker than everyone else yet the only one with a move that could actually can kill Frieza). -- "Maybe it's a tentacle, molesting the planet itself. - Aschen Brodel. |

short answer, no real set format. write out your character and how you think he fits best. organization can happen afterwards and you'll eventually have a writeup on just the guy that's easy enough to post.
long answer... thought about making one or a template, but ultimately figured that anything i'd come up with just is good for me, not necessarily for everyone else. so it's a bit of a copout - the general format is "how the character can be best represented." basically, write away. tweak accordingly. it doesn't have to be set in stone immediately and there's time to tweak, work on, and edit your entry. some stuff you'd want to cover in there, like how's the world he's from, what can he do, how does he do it, what has he done, what special rules does his universe have that are relevant (e.g., star wars and the force), if there are any specific traits or features to him that are relevant (e.g., a special mole that seduces women *cough*). so long as you flesh things out, the format will generally come together and eventually a 'standard' that people like will be used. -- "Maybe it's a tentacle, molesting the planet itself. - Aschen Brodel. |

who knows, they might! but now for wall of 4 rules. all mostly stuff you'd expect, but feel free to point out if something don't make sense.
1) don't make your character too perfect. give him a sensible weakness, a flaw, notable and relevant limitations. a mary sue is lame. it's fun to think of a character who has a solution to everything and can do almost anything, but "the hero always wins!" is terrible and results in boring characters who give boring matches. you can see this with the complaints superman has - he's strong enough to palm a black hole, fast enough to escape a double black hole, can stop a collapsing multiverse by singing, all while being the bestest guy ever. all absurd, all happened, all used as feats, and all reasons why people hate him. he can be interesting at times but what gets brought up leaves him as being simply too much and too perfect. actual characters with actual flaws/limits, despite being really powerful, helps. it's fine to have them good at a lot but don't make "Mr. McPerfect but-he-has-bad-hair." 3) avoid one-trick ponies. Balefire. timehax, invincibility, speed force, there's a long list of "oh well there's this move and there's asdfsadg." not all of those have to be a move either - if your case is basically "with this he's invincible but without it he's lame" then you have a bad case. there's also stuff like Flash, where he rarely ever shows those specific powers used in conjunction, yet he just so happens does it all the time here. it's not entirely out of character, but it's entirely unusual. just try to avoid stuff that boils down to "if he does X" or "well, his power is Y and it results in X" because nobody really likes it and it serves no purpose beyond being annoying. the point's to have fun, not make the most broken thing imaginable. yes, i see the hypocrisy in the name. you're half a decade late. 4) be original. this isn't a '100% creativity!' rule or something - if you like a certain power or something that's fine. inspiration's good and all, but don't go along mooching off characters that already exist. no making superman-that's-not-superman or making a character who just so happens to have 90% of the the same backstory, powers, etc of someone else. if you have a certain world in mind (e.g., Mistborn or Fate/Stay Night), try to detail it and picture your character in a vacuum, away from the source, because that's where he'll be in. he's not from that material, but from what you described. no, going "he's from __" isn't gonna work: if you want your character to be a servant or something, explain how it works in your setting. you don't have to follow the same rules, though if you do, you still should detail them. because... 5) create what you want, but once you say you're done, you are done. this keeps consistency, originality high, and keeps things moving. once you're comfy with your final version, just bold in clear terms that your character's completed and be sure to include a writeup that matches what you said, otherwise all that'll be taken is a frankenstein mess of what you said with minimal editing. the important part here is that when you say you're done, that's it. the character is no longer in your hands, he's out there and if you thought that his powers work one way, but others don't, that is perfectly fine. if you weren't clear on something then you don't have "word of god" to say "oh no it works this way!" and people have to accept that, they can instead agree or disagree with you. think of it like the random spell contest in that regards, because interp matters quite a bit. if you want less interp and people to see exactly what you have in mind, then write it out better, ask if anything's missing, etc. -- "Maybe it's a tentacle, molesting the planet itself. - Aschen Brodel. |

terrains i honestly don't know what to think of yet. "neutral" translates to boring or not really neutral.
<_<; halfway thinking of spirit of the contest can take that over too. make the terrain. have people voice opinions on it, see what can work. when it comes to matches a couple ideas stand out - if your character ends up being selected to compete then you can pick up to <insert number> from a list of eligible terrains. if two match up, that's the terrain. if they don't, randomizer ahoy. ain't perfect, but does make for better terrains and fits thematically. -- The King Wang. Wanglicious 05/25/12 6:35:00 PM #1 |
so the last topic got me to thinking that maybe this can work. all depends on user effort more than anything else. on the most basic level, the whole most powerful character bit is kinda played out. yes you can have interesting matches, yes you can have an interesting contest, and it's good to have what's usually well defined characters - all true. new blood's a great thing too as it helps spice things up a bit. a couple attempts to make it a little more interesting has happened over the years with subtle and not-so-stuble ideas of how to do this, and most likely within the year we'll see someone try it again and enjoy watching it spiral to its death or be an okay success.
but this isn't either of those. this is a create-a-character take on this and primarily serves as a create a character topic. character creation is the most important phase and by far the longest, and the contest itself is a flexible idea so eventually a competition can be made with user-made characters in a way that will fit. obviously most characters are expected to have a nod towards combat, but we'll see how that works as i've no idea what level of power to expect, but so long as it fits and we don't have crazy mismatches like superman vs. rambo or something, we should be fine. hopefully there'll be some actual entries worth a damn too, not just 2-3 throwaway lines. creativity's the game! and probably where the game ends but still...! so to be clear, this isn't a case where you pick characters to fit the mold of a contest, it's you make the characters and a contest will be made to fit them. if a character won't be a good mix in one run, then fine, he'll be sidelined. if a character is more focused towards a tag-team battle then if there are enough entries you could make a tag-team duo (mpfc contest based on this in 3...2..). hell, if somehow there's enough entries of fighting cats with guitars then i guess that'd be the contest too. so, how will this work? let's start with the basic part: character creation. to one line it: the best way to solve a boring contest is to have interesting competitors. you make a character and edit it accordingly during the start of this, call it the "character creation" phase. if you think your character is too weak, ask. too strong, ask. if you're looking for ways to make him more interesting, ask. but once you're done, bold that your character's completed and that you're done. from there you have no creative control on it and if someone sees something differently, that's their call to make. from there with enough entries to fit the mold, we'll be able to start something up. ideally it'd be from a range of users - last thing wanted is a contest made up of 4 people with too much time. for now, thinking of shooting for a smaller one due to the necessary effort, so 16 entries seems like a good figure to start with. if things go well then maybe it can be increased. for some general tips, describe the character. tell us their strengths, weaknesses, and try not to be too vague (e.g., "the greatest warrior on the planet!" means what, how good is the tech, the other warriors, the magic, what can a "standard" person do, etc). some backstory, facts, feats, and specific traits can be helpful too. tell us what they can do, why they do it, where they're from, and how. if there's a problem of frequency (e.g., can only use this skill once) then say so. have a couple basic rules that exist really to not make things boring. mostly simple stuff - don't make them these flawless creatures, give them a weakness, avoid one trick ponies, and be original mostly. will flesh out the rules in a bit. -- The future must protect the clone's past. ...in thta case yeah, upgrade away to the elite. it is very much so a mediocre phone and seems to be fielding specs resembling the Optimus T, though a bit better in some areas (so a slight upgrade of that). having used a T before, it's "good enough" to do most of what you'll want for a smartphone. some of the bigger tasks aren't really wanted with a screen that small (though emulators still prob work well enough). it's basically a midrange to upper range 2010 phone. not great, not terrible, and an improvement over your mid 2009 phone. it's the missing year - 2011 - where the growth was utterly insane. if you can't upgrade later, then upgrade it now to the newer model.

well, Wii U is a given yeah, there's a lot to be interested about it. and the 3DS future should be something else as they're shooting this year to be godly.

Wanglicious 05/24/12 5:13:00 PM #12 |
canon-wise, it's before Ys 1.
release-wise, it was made in i think 2006. around that time anyway. so yeah, it's basically the 2nd most recent Ys that isn't a PSP or DS port/remake. -- The future must protect the clone's past. "Maybe it's a tentacle, molesting the planet itself. - Aschen Brodel. |

Wanglicious 05/24/12 5:11:00 PM #10 |
yeah, Origin is 1) Japanese only until now, and 2) PC only.
so this is a pretty big step for 'em. if this gets money then we may be able to get the other Falcom games - especially wanting to play the Legend of Heroes games as i doubt PSP is getting anything else. -- The future must protect the clone's past. no seriously, the pirated version can be equal by any level you want from a technical standpoint. that's really not an issue, you'd just need to get the higher quality stuff. fact is you can also get it at a variety of other, smaller levels too. like sure you can get the fully uncompressed 1080p vid with FLAC, or you can compromise here and there.

interesting that the jury was on google's side all along it seems. most people really don't like patent law with electronics either, and apparently if you try to explain it to a layperson their reaction is the same as a learned one: this is stupid, does not work, and is a curse against the english language with how much spin there is to try to make things the goddamn same.
i WISH the message here would, along with judges going in this direction, be that parents + electronics = terrible mix and you need to seriously reform the law to fix this crap because it's not working. but for now, this win will do. -- The future must protect the clone's past.
