Eh, well, we're not so much worried about that, although he very well might. We live in a house that's now four apartments. It's us, him, and a hippie and a silent old man upstairs. I don't think he'd suspect them because they've lived with him for a few years now and haven't reported any of his behavior. He also burst into our apartment when we lived next door to ask us to move our car out of his parking spot. Like, just up and opened our door and walked up the stairs and into our kitchen and told us to move our car. So **** that dude, he's already screwed us over.

But all that said, no, I don't think he necessarily knows or thinks it's us. We haven't shown any dislike towards him, and one time I walked home from the local deli with him and we just chatted. I like the guy well-enough except for the way that he's totally sketchy.

Our landlord told us that if he ever caused us any problems or made us uncomfortable to call the cops because other people have complained about him, so I think he's looking for a reason to get rid of the guy.

Umm... I haven't heard anything about this at all. I mean, I can go a day without the internet, but if Anon legitimately shuts down the entire web for a day? I'm not sure it would do much good. I could see it polarizing the population to either side of the SOPA/PIPA/ACTA/PCfIPA debate. And I think that's a dangerous step to take, because most people are stupid and will lump Anon in with the people these bills oppose and will side with legislators.

But then again it probably won't happen.

I remember getting upset at my cousin when I was little and was playing Kung Fu for the NES and he called the levels "stages". No, a stage is what opera singers perform, a level is a video game level.

Maybe that was a regional thing, though. He's from Kentucky and I'm from Maine, and there are any number of dialectical differences between those two places.

It is sort of a legacy term I guess, but I see it like the evolution of any other language. What else would you call the extremely common video game cliche of having a particularly strong enemy at the end of levels? It's just "boss." The word "boss" means that now. In fact, I'd say the word is common enough in our overall language that the dictionary is being negligent in not including this definition of the word "boss."

(Other video game words that are funny if you break them down: enemy, level)

I agree, mos def. I'm not arguing against using the word, I'm just confused as to why we do. Well, the second definition that Azp posted illuminates it a bit, but that still seems a bit off to me. Sure, Bowser is ostensibly the boss of all the koopas and goombas and what have yous, but not all video game bosses are bosses. The first boss in Ninja Gaiden? The Colossi? Any Mega Man boss ever other than Dr. Wily or Sigma? Every boss fight in every Final Fantasy game other than Rufus?

I can kinda understand the first one, insofar as the difficulty of a boss is higher than that of normal enemies in a video game, and that if you drew a line graph with the Y-axis representing difficulty level and the X-axis representing different types of enemies the spike on boss would protrude higher than the rest of the line, but I really doubt that's the reasoning.

I assume it's a translation error from Japan. It has to be.

She's been over a few times before, they always argue about how much money he owes her, and he always says he's going to slit her throat or drag her behind his car or whatever.

Yeah, my neighbor's probably my city's Dexter.

But tonight he was thumping her against walls over and over so I finally called the cops. Apparently he had busted open her eye pretty badly and messed up her mouth. The cops had to take pictures. And apparently he's had an outstanding warrant for his arrest for God-knows-what - a Sheriff knocked on our door a few months back with a warrant for the guy. We overheard the cops saying that since he'd been charged with Assault before that they have to take him in overnight.

I feel good about having done this but the dude's a psycho so now we'll probably have to move out to make sure he doesn't slit our throats in our sleep.
