Maniac64: Another of my wrestling buddies. I'm also pretty sure you're one of about five people who's been consistently keeping up with my Nitro watchthroughs, so that's good! You've always shown up to several of the PPV watchfests, to boot. I would be very surprised if we could somehow get you, Bidoof, eddsv, and War in the same watchfest just once. It feels like I'm always watching a show with just two of you, but I digress.

Well, wrestling aside, you're a pretty good guy. You obviously have a job, and seem to do a great job at whatever you do, seeing as how you're usually on GameFAQs while at work. I can only assume you're some sort of work that relates to the internet. Maybe you work at a boring office job, and you don't have people bothering you 24/7. That'd be an awesome job, I guess.

Video showing the Souled Out Match between Nash/Giant.

Giant out being interviewed by Mean Gene. He cuts a promo on Nash, and says when he's back in the ring, he gets his hand(s) around Nash's neck, he'll feel the ride of his life. He then says that there's a bad case of 'Giant' on his back. Uh... That sounds disgusting.

Mean Gene interviews Brian Adams. Adams tells Mean Gene to shut up. Hey, I like him. He then cuts a promo on Bret Hart. That's not.. a good promo. Bret Hart eventually comes out. He challenges him and they start to duke it out. Eventually, Curt Hennig runs out to make the save when Hart has the Sharpshooter on Adams. Rude, Adams, and Hennig cause it to be three on one. Flair runs out and evens the odds.

Flair on the mic and puts over Bret Hart. Bret Hart then challenges Curt Hennig for Uncensored. Flair then points at a fat nWo fan, and gyrates saying 'that's where the nWo is at.' Okay then.

nWo out, minus Hall. They call out Sting, saying they'll leave if he decides to show up. Sting out, and the nWo starts to leave. A fake Sting (Scott Hall) is behind the real Sting. nWo beatdown on Sting. As Sting is getting the spray paint, Savage runs out and attacks the nWo, but eventually he's beaten down too. While Hogan is beating down Savage, a strange looking bearded guy gets in the ring. Looks like a biker. Hmm... Savage is spray painted as well. Luger runs out with a chair and the nWo bolts. Hey, we still end with Standard Nitro Ending #2.

Obviously, the weird bearded guy was the man of a 1000 Gimmicks, Ed Leslie. Was he the person in the limo earlier in the night? Who knows.

Lots of matches on this Nitro, but a good share of them were squashes. After the first hour, lots of jobbers showed up and competed. Technically speaking, the main event was Brad Armstong vs. Ric Flair. The last half hour was really nothing more than interviews, and an nWo beat down. Not the greatest night in the history of our shirt, that's for sure. 4/10

TV Rating: 4.6

Other Nitro Notes:

1. I don't know what's more bizarre about the first match. 1. Luger being in the first match. 2. Sting pulling the Standard Nitro Ending #2 at the start of the show, or 3. The Barbarian wearing a shirt and tie.

2. Heenan claims he's never seen one man wrestle for a title in back to back matches. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Heenan an announcer for WrestleMania IX?

3. Speaking of Heenan, Tony/Heenan have been arguing a whole lot more often. I guess working with him for three and a half hours every week was getting on Heenan's nerves.

Hour Two begins.

Nitro Girls, and Nitro Party shilling

Jericho out with Juvi's mask on. He gets on the mic and says that he wanted to wear the mask, but why cover up his face? He also says he talked to the WCW Championship Committee, and wanted the name of the show go from WCW Monday Nitro, to WCW Monday Jericho. I'd approve.

Match Five: Chris Jericho(c) vs. Lenny Lane for the WCW Cruiserweight Championship

Jericho decides against wearing the belt for this match.

Decent bout between these two, with Lane getting some decent offense in, but Jericho retains with the Lion Tamer.

Winner, and STILL WCW Cruiserweight Champion: Chris Jericho

We go to the announce booth as they talk about what happened n hour one. We then get video of Scott Steiner attacking Luger earlier, and Sting showing up.

Match Six: Vincent vs. Rick Steiner w/Ted Dibiase

Squash match as Steiner wins with the Steiner Bulldog from the rop rope.

Rick decides to bite Vincent. Guess Bischoff's bite me wish has been served. SQUASH

Rest of Hour Two/Hour Three Commentators: Mike Tenay, Tony Schiavone, and Bobby Heenan

Match Seven: Yuji Nagata w/Sonny Onoo vs. Saturn

Long match here between two heels. Naturally, this kills the crowd. Saturn eventually wins with the Rings of Saturn.

Match Eight: Renegade vs. Booker T(c) for the WCW World Television Championship

Renegade is a former TV Champ. He beat Arn Anderson of all people to win it. How the 'mighty' haev fallen.

Booker finally hits the 110th Street Slam. It looks like a Spinebuster. Eventually, Booker T is able to retain with the Harlem Sidekick.

Konnan with.. A-Team music? Odd.

Back and forth match that sees Konnan get the win with the Tequlia Sunrise after hitting the Cradle DDT.

Konnan grabs a mic and talks about Juventud Guerrera. He tries to put over Juvi losing his mask as a big deal ,and even uses Juvi's real name at one point. Funny how he mocks one guy for losing his mask, when he lost his mask as well. 1/2*

Match Ten: Vicious and Delicious vs. High Voltage

High Voltage have apparently been in Japan. I gotta say they do look better in the ring.

High Voltage with a surprisingly high amount of offense in, but a big reversal from Norton where he suplexes both men and Bagwell htis the Blockbuster proves to be the best for them, as they get the win.

Decent match between these two, but Eddie Guerrero proves to be the better man tonight as he wins with the Frog Splash.

Armstong has a fair bit more luck with against Flair did he did with Goldberg, but ultimately he still gets an 'L' after Flair wins with the Figure Four.

Airdate: Febuary 23rd, 1998
Arena/Location: Arco Arena in Sacramento, California
Hour One/First Half of Hour Two Commentators: Mike Tenay, Tony Schiavone, and Larry Zbyszko

We start Nitro off with words from DDP, Booker T, Ric Flair, and Bret Hart. Each one talks about how bad it is Scott Steiner turned on his own brother to join the nWo.

After the opening video, we go to the announce booth where we are informed Sting is now WCW World Heavyweight Champion. They also talk about Scott Steiner being in the nWo as well.

We go to Mean Gene in the back as he tries to interview Rick Steiner. Rick has just arrived at the arena. He asks Steiner about the break up, and Rick ignores him.

Luger out with taped ribs. Luger congratulates Sting for winning the belt, then Luger says he's upset at what Scott Steiner did to his brother. He then calls out Scott Steiner, but he actually has a match with fellow nWo member...

Match One: Lex Luger vs. Curt Hennig w/Rick Rude

Two minutes in, Scott Steiner runs out (now with blonde hair and goatee) and get attacks Luger from behind.

Winner by DQ: Lex Luger

Bagwell runs out when Luger is in control. Rick Steiner runs out, but he's blindsided by the nWo B-Team. Sting(?!) falls from the rafters and makes the save. WCW guys out now checking on Luger/R. Steiner. N/R

Match Two: Diamond Dallas Page(c) vs. Hammer w/Flock for the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship

Lodi Sign(s): Hug Your Intern (Ha!), Enjoy The Break (?) Toad Clean the Pad!

Loud Lodi sucks chant. Larry, paying attention to the crowd, wonders who the goof at ringside is.

Hammer gets a decent amount of offense in here. Guess Page was putting his friend over. Page doesn't last that long though as he gets the win with a Diamond Cutter wihel Hammer is on the top rope.

Winner, and STILL WCW United States Heavyweight Champoin: Diamond Dallas Page.

Flock tries to get the beat down on Page, but Benoit makes the save. 1/2*

After the break, we go outside the arena where Hogan, Bischoff and a third person in the back of a limo are exiting a limo, but Hogan/Bischoff tell him to stay. Vincent comes out of nowhere and tells them Sting showed up. Hogan/Bischoff are seen walking through the back. When they get into the arena, Hogan is furious and ripping people's signs down. Same stuff Hogan's been babbling about for a while. He does say though that Hall is going to get his shot tonight against Sting, beat Sting, and give the title to Hogan. Shouldn't Hogan know that giving the title to someone doesn't work? Hogan then says that he wants a match against Savage at Uncensored in a Cage match.

Savage shows up in the crowd with Liz. He says he'll kick Hogan out of the nWo. Hogan retorts he'll bury Savage at Uncensored. Guess we know who's winning.

Match Three: Ultimo Dragon vs. Kaz Hayashi

One of Kaz's trainers was Ultimo Dragon. So this should be good.

Kaz gets in some decent offense in on Dragon, but ultimately he falls to the Dragon Sleeper.

Winner by submission: Ultimo Dragon

These two duke it out for several minutes, but the Flock eventually runs in and causes a DQ. Wait, I thought every Raven match was Raven's Rules?

DDP out now, but Benoit accidentally clocks him. Page/Benoit/Raven duke it out, before Benoit/Page take out the Flock. Benoit/Page left in the ring, staring at each other. *1/4

NioraptH: Oh Nio. How can I do a write-up about you if I didn't mention that voice. Everytime I hear that voice, I end up in stitches. A voice like that shouldn't possibly exist in this universe, but it does. Your voice is hilariously awesome.

We haven't talked all that much, but when I used to (semi)-frequent B8Chat, you were usually the only one in there. Well, the only one who was active. We share some common interests, but I don't think we've ever had a fun or intriguing conversation. At least, if we did I don't really remember them. Blame the weed. Also, Kevin Conroy is Batman.

Anagram: You're another person I haven't had much contact with. Despite that I will say that I've followed a few of your projects. Like the one where you rated all the Main Star War's characters, or the watching of all episodes of the Pokemon anime. Did you ever get done with that one? I remember reading most of the Indigo League and I kind of stopped reading it after that.

You've been on B8 for a long while. Far longer than I have been. I know you used to have all sorts of hilarious topic posted, but for the life of me I can't remember many of them. Again, blame the weed.

Voltch: It's very obvious to me that you blatantly ripped off my watch every WCW Nitro topic and made it into a watch every WWF(E) PPV topic. Hell now that I think about it, you didn't start doing your topic until after you sat in on a few of the WCW PPVs! Hell, you even got a better deal than I did. Instead of having to sit through hundreds of TV shows hyping up the PPV, you get to the PPVs itself. I mean, you've went from 1985(ish) to 1997 in the span of four months, while I've been doing my own thing since January, and I'm barely two years into WCW. So, really you got the better deal there.

Excluding the blatant knockoff of my idea, you're a really nice, cool guy. We've spoken on AIM more than a few times, and I admit you're easily one of the more entertaining people I've spoken to. We have several things in common, and we usually goof around about wrestling related things, or we talk about American Football. Shame though that when you went on Serious Business and talked about the guys you wanted to put over guys to get more e-pop, I wasn't included. Regardless, you're still a good acquittance.

SuperBrawl had one of the hotter PPV crowds I've seen for a WCW show. That always helps to make a show feel better than they actually are, and this was no exception. There were a several good matches, along with only one really bad one. Sting leaving as champ was the right move. I'd say this was slightly better than Souled Out. While that show had some great matches, this show ultimately put Sting down as the undisputed champion. Plus, Hogan almost lost clean. That's a shocker in of itself. 7/10

PPV Buyrates: 1.10 - a slight increase from Souled Out. Not bad, but it is a big drop from Starrcade.

In case you missed SuperBrawl VIII, here's what happened

Booker T regained the TV Title from Rick Martel after a Harlem Sidekick. Decent match that only got ten minutes. The crowd was VERY hot for this (and every other) match. Martel suffered a torn medial-collateral ligament when Booker T hip tossed him, and Martel landed awkwardly in the ropes. *3/4

Immediately after the end of that match, Booker T was able to retain his newly won TV Title from Saturn after the Harlem Hangover. Great match between these two men. Considering they improved the entirety of the bout beforehand, it's surprising how well it went down. ***3/4

Disco Inferno was able to beat the Chairman of WCW La Parka with a Stone Cold Chartbuster. Lots of brawling outside the ring for this match. At one point, the chair got involved, but it was La Parka who went crashing into it after teasing a superplex onto the chair. Could have been better. *1/2

James J. Dillon reinstated Nick Patrick, but told him he wasn't refereeing the main event.

Bill Goldberg (30-0) won an unadvertised match against Brad Armstrong after the Jackhammer, and is now 31-0 for TV matches. SQUASH

Jericho was able to retain his title and demask Juventud Guerrera after Juvi tapped out of the Liontamer. At one point, it looked as though Juvi had the win, but Jericho was able to grab the ropes just in time. Here's a thought for you all: had Rey Mysterio Jr. not gotten injured, would he had demasked here instead of JuvI? ***1/2

The British Bulldog Davey Boy Smith made Mongo submit to an armbar after working over his arm for about three minutes. Apparently, Mongo actually didn't submit, and he's claiming the ref said he quit when he didn't. Bad match. Had I rated the Goldberg/Armstrong match, it would have been better than this six minutes of nothing. DUD

Diamond Dallas Page was able to retain his United States Heavyweight Championship from Chris Benoit after the Diamond Cutter. Good bout between both men, but it could have been far better. Twice it appeared Referee Charles Robinson was hesitant to count Benoit's pins on Page. ***1/4

Lex Luger was able to make Savage submit to the Torture Rack. The crowd had an audible Luger Sucks chant going at one point. Savage was able to work over Luger's ribs for most of the bout, but he's able to come back and puts Savage in the Rack. Elizabeth does a run in and eye-pokes Luger. The nWo B-Team guys (+ Hogan) run out then and.. .do nothing, as well. This was about the same as their previous match at Souled Out. 3/4*

In the 'they should have done this a few week ago', The Outsiders were able to beat the Steiners with Scott Steiner turned heel on his own brother. The crowd (which was definitely pro-nWo) gave one of the loudest pops of the night when Scott Steiner did that. Hall got the win for his team with the Outsider's Edge. *

Sting was able to recapture the vacant WCW World Heavyweight Championshp in his match against Hollywood Hogan. This match saw two different ref bumps. The first to Randy Anderson who was out the rest of the match. Nick Patrick ran out and proved he was a face by calling it down the middle. Sting looked like he had the win with the Scorpion Deathdrop, but Nick Patrick was knocked out by a stray kick from Hogan. the nWo ran out, but Sting kept them at bay. Savage snuck in and casually hit Hogan with a spraycan while he was still out from the Deathdrop. Sting nor the ref saw it, but Sting took advantage anyways. Not the worst match on the card, and the ending was actually sorta kinda.. clean? Well, about as clean as Hogan would like it. *1/4

Match Six: nWo (Hennig/Adams) w/Rick Rude vs. Neidhart/Smith

Less match and more of a slugfest. The bell eventually rings when Rude interferes, but these five men still go at it.

No contest

I hate to be a bummer, but only Jim Neidhart is still alive from that segment. N/R

Mike Tenay interviews the Steiners. Rick's the only who talks, as he hypes up the Outsiders/Steiners match at SuperBrawl.

The announcers talk about the Savage/Luger thing some more. We get a replay of what happened earlier.

Match Seven: 'The Chairman of WCW' La Parka vs. Super Calo

Lee Marshall off the announce booth as Mike Tenay joins the booth for this match.

Rest of Thunder Commentators: Bobby Heenan, Tony Schiavone, and Mike Tenay

Short match that sees Disco Inferno do a run in.... and walks back out of the ring. La Parka gets the win.

Winner by pinfall: La Parka

Disco runs back in, but La Parka uses the chair to hit Inferno. That was weird. 1/4*

Hype video from Benoit/DDP at SuperBrawl.

Chris Jericho gets on the mic, and tells the crowd that he wants them to want him. He then says that Juvi without his mask looks sorta like Quasimodo, and that after he takes his mask off, he'll have Quasi-Juice written on his tights. He even considers letting Juvi keep his mask cause of how ugly he is.

Match Eight: Chris Jericho(c) vs. Dean Malenko for the WCW Cruiserweight Championship

Good matchup between these two men, with Malenko getting close to winning at one point with the Texas Cloverleaf, but Jericho is able to come back and win with the Liontamer.

Winner, and STILL WCW Cruiserweight Champion: Chris Jericho

Replay of the DDP/Raven confrontation with the Flock running in and Benoit making the save.

Match Nine: Chris Benoit and Diamond Dallas Page vs. The Flock (Saturn/Raven) in a Raven's Rules match

Back and forth bout between these four men. Things turn toward Saturn/Raven when the Flock starts to interfere, but no win for them yet. Hell, DDP/Benoit have a couple of bad calls from the ref on them that cost them the win. DDP finally gets the hot tag after he went head first in a steel chair. After more fighting, Page hits the Cutter on Raven, while Benoit grabs the win with the Crippler Crossface on Saturn.

Winners by pinfall: Chris Benoit and Diamond Dallas Page

Good TV match that gets about eleven minutes or so (plus a commercial break thrown in.) Glad to see Thunder has had the token ***+ match on it the last few weeks. ***1/4

Main Event: Randy Savage vs. Sting

... Doesn't really happen as Hogan and the nWo carry out Savage (who has a Sting mask on.) The announcer aren't exactly sure if that's indeed Savage, despite it looking LIKE Savage and has Savage's tights on. Hogan says the match between Sting/Savage won't happen. He says that Savage knows he must run with the rest of the pack. Hogan says Sting won't come out cause he's afraid of the nWo.

On cue, Sting runs out and Sting beats down most of the group, but eventually the numbers are too much. Luger runs out to make the save. Standard Nitro ending #2 as Sting/Luger stand tall in the face of the nWo.

The ending is about what you expect from Nitro/Thunder. Discounting the ending we've seen dozens of times, it wasn't a bad show. Good matches, and a few last minute hype ups of some of the undercard matches, so that's good. Hopefully, SuperBrawl is as good as I remember it. 6.5/10

Other Thunder Notes:

1. Lee Marshall hyped up a new move Booker T had, but Booker T never used it.

2. Shilling the post-Thunder movie: Speaking of Booker T, he was on shill duty as he hyped up Delta Force II with Chuck Norris.

WCW Thunder
Airdate: Febuary 19th, 1998
Arena/Location: BJCC in Birmingham, Alabama
Commentators: Bobby Heenan, Tony Schiavone, and Lee Marshall

We start off Thunder with stills from the end of Nitro. Are they too lazy to show the actual footage?

The announcers hype up the main event of Sting/Savage. They then talk about a supposed Chris Jericho interview. We go to a pre-tape of Tenay talking to Jericho, before it cuts to the nWo grabbing the attention and beating up Savage and Lex Luger. Tony points out that for some reason, Savage/Luger were out in the parking lot talking. Considering all the people around, they might have been greeting fans.

Match One: Fit Finlay w/Mullet vs. Goldberg

Finlay is able to go blow to blow with Goldberg for only a few minutes, but eventually Goldberg proves to be the better man as he hits his spear, Jackhammer, and grabs the win.

Winner by pinfall: Goldberg (29-0)

Match Two: Psicosis vs. Chavo Guerrero Jr.

Decent match here. Chavo in control for the majority of the bout, but Psicosis capitalizes near the end as he has Chavo eat his boot (not literally) and grabs the win from a guillotine legdrop.

Winner by pinfall: Psicosis

Bischoff/Hogan out. Hogan's got a new nWo shirt on. Bischoff out grinning. Hogan and Bischoff claim Savage is fine, and back in the nWo, all while laughing and carrying on. They say Sting is going to have to be at his best tonight. Hogan rambles on, while they crowd approves with a Hogan sucks chant.

Match Three: Booker T vs Riggs w/ Lodi

Lodi Sign: Omega, watch and learn. - Or should that be OMEGA? Lodi's Back: Make Love, Not War

Back and forth bout between these two men, but it appears that Riggs injures his arm after a failed elbow drop. Booker T grabs the win with the scissor's kick.

Winner by pinfall: Booker T

The Flock yanks Lodi back onto their side of the barricade as Booker T celebrates. The Flock wants to attack Booker T, but Saturn tells them not to. Hmm. *

Lex Luger getting taped up after his beatdown. Mike Tenay walks in and tries to interview him. Luger is visibly agitated. The announcers wonder why Luger did that. He's hurt and wants medical attention to his injury?

Match Four: Kidman w/Lodi vs. Juventud Guerrera

Lodi Sign: Kidman: Cruiserweight Expert

Tony informs us that Giant might be at SuperBrawl for an interview.

Good cruiserweight bout, but Juvi grabs the win with the 450 Splash.

Winner by pinfall: Juventud Guerrera

Jericho (belt still on) out and beats up on Juvi. Jericho puts Guerrera on the top rope and takes his mask off. Jericho is celebrating, but Juvi still has a mask on! Juvi hits a dropkick on Jericho, and these two fight up the ramp as we go to break. *1/2

WCW Motorsports

Outsiders and Dusty Rhodes out to start hour two. Hall does his survey, but the nWo isn't that big in Alabama. Nash cuts a promo on the Giant, saying that he should retire at SuperBrawl. He then does a shout-out to Syxx.

Match Five: Outsider w/Dusty Rhodes vs. Mike Enos and Wayne Bloom

For those who don't know, these are a veteran tag team that's worked in AWA/WWF.

Not much of a match as after a few minutes in, Nash hits Bloom with a Powerbomb to cause a DQ.

Winners by DQ: Enos/Bloom

Nash is again taking off in handcuffs again. "Attica! Attica!" N/R

Replay of Adams/Hart from Nitro, where Adams turned out to be an nWo member.

Curt Hennig, Brian Adams, and Rick Rude out. They talk about how Hart isn't really the best there Is/Was/Ever will be. British Bulldog and Jim Neidhart out challenge them to a match. I assume we got a match.

^ You may not remember Rick Martel in WCW because his entire run outside a token match in July of 1998 was during this period.

It's a shame too, because despite him being in his 40's at this point, he was putting on very good matches.
