Main Event: Curt Hennig(c) vs. Diamond Dallas Page w/Kimberly Page for the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship
At one point, Hennig has DDP in a submission and barely has his foot on the rope, and Page is acting like that much leverage is hurting him. Odd. DDP starts to come back, and looks to hit the Diamond Cutter, but Hennig reverses. Flair is being held back by security. Hennig is distracted, DDP gets the pinfall. I think? Winner? and Er... WCW United States Heavyweight Champion: Uh.. **1/2 Pee-Wee Anderson counted three, but claims he didn't? What the hell? Roddy Piper (who apparently has made a quick recovery) out now with Anderson and the US Title. DDP is still in the ring. Piper holds up DDP's arm and says DDP wins. As he does this, the nWo guys are AGAIN out and beating down DDP and Piper. Hogan is out there hitting Piper and DDP with a belt. Savage hits the flying elbow as well. Sting appears in the crowd. It's obviously another fake Sting, as well. There are more fake Stings as well. About a dozen fake Stings are getting in the ring now, but keep getting attacked. The nWo is attacking each one, one by one. Three come out from the entryway at the same time, Bagwell hits one and.. It's the REAL Sting! The Real sting drops Bagwell, the nWo backs off, and Nitro is over. Alright show, but the ending was really confusing. According to Wikipedia, DDP didn't beat Hennig for the belt, despite there being a three count. Further, we get two Piper beatings, two Piper promos, and other stuff that could have been put together in one segment. That was bad. On the plus side, there was some nice matches, one squash, and a good Main event that technically ended clean, but I guess the referee sort of screwed it up. Maybe. A step down from the previous Nitro. 5/10 TV Rating: 3.8 Other Nitro Notes: 1. Hilarious in Hindsight Moment of the Night: WCW tried to book Jeff Jarrett in a match despite his contract coming up? Oh, I'm sure WWF would never do something that stupid! 2. Sign of the Night: Kevin Nash is my Sex Slave - I wonder how long it takes for him to surrender after abuse to his quad. 3. Quote of the Show: A tie, but during the same bit. After the kid threw the mask back at Rey Mysterio Jr.: "Hey look, that kid just unmasked himself!" - Bobby Heenan. Also, "There's nothing like live TV." "Yeah there is: Radio!" - Tony Schiavone and Bobby Heenan 4. Something I haven't brought up that much, but these two hour Nitros have been creeping up into more 'overtime' lately. This Nitro for example was nearly two and a half hours long. -- Hell, I'm not telling you anything that you don't already know.. Hour Two Commentators: Mike Tenay, Tony Schiavone, and Bobby Heenan
Hall and Syxx out. Syxx is wearing a tag belt. After Hall's survey. The crowd is pro nWo. While Hall is cutting a promo against the Steiners, a wadded up cup hits Hall right in the mouth. Good accuracy! Match Five: Wolfpack (Hall and Syxx) (c) vs. The Steiner Brothers w/Ted Dibiase for the WCW World Tag Team Championships Back and forth contest here, but the Steiners are getting control near the end of the match. The Steiners hit their DDT on Syxx and.. the ref is pulled out of the ring by Hall. Zbyszko out and taunts Hall, and Scott Steiner attacks Hall. Zbyszko runs in and does the pin. Winners, and NEW WCW World Tag Team Champions: The Steiner Brothers Zbyszko celebrates with the Steiners and Dibiase as the announcer are more than happy to point out the belts are in WCW again. **1/4 Tony Schiavone informs us that Larry Z. is indeed a signed official, and that Bischoff CAN'T reverse the decision. Hmm. Match Six: Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Dean Malenko Rey Mysterio Jr. again takes off his outer mask and gives it to a little fan. The fan, no older than a year old, throws it BACK at Mysterio. I WISH there was a gif of that online. Mysterio appears to have this match won several times, and even hits is finishing move on Dean Malenko, but Guerrero runs out, snatches the mask off of Mysterio, and Malenko takes advantage of it by winning with the Texas Cloverleaf. Winner by submission: Dean Malenko *3/4 We get a Diamond Dallas Page vignette where he's in the WCW Power Plant. he talks about his feud with Savage, and the match at Halloween Havoc. Great hype job. Piper out.. Again. He tells the crowd Larry Zbyszko is an assigned official now. Again, we know this. Bischoff and Savage out. Again. After some jawing back and forth, the nWo (Bagwell, Norton, Konnan, Vincent) out now. They stand off with Piper, as 'Sting' shows up. It's obviously a fake Sting. After this Sting threatens the nWo, he pulls his mask off and.. It's Hollywood Hogan. Big beatdown on Piper now. Of course no WCW guys out. We get a video pacakge for the Hennig/Flair match at Halloween Havoc. Not bad. Match Seven: Ray Traylor vs. Scott Norton w/Bagwell and Vincent Bagwell with the spraypaint. Gee, I wonder who's winning. Also, Billy Kidman out and wearing Raven-style clothing with eyeliner over his eyes as he sits with Raven, Saturn, and Sickboy. He looks so out of place. Of course, that above is the most interesting bit for this match. Norton is able to win with him hitting Traylor with the spray can. Winner by pinfall: Scott Norton Traylor gets a beatdown and spraypainted for his trouble. At least he's not feuding with John Tenta over hair. 1/4* Match Eight: Alex Wright vs. Disco Inferno(c) for the WCW World Television Championship I don't know what's worse, the fact that half the crowd does Wright's dance, half the crowd does Disco's dance, or I remember Disco's theme thirteen years after last hearing it. Wright in control for the majority of the match. Jacqueline out partway through the match. She taunts Inferno. She however fails at having the belt change hands as Disco still wins. Winner and STILL WCW World Television Champion: Disco Inferno *3/4 -- Hell, I'm not telling you anything that you don't already know.. WCW Nitro
Airdate: October 13th, 1997 Arena/Location: Ice Palace in Tampa, Florida Hour One Commentators: Mike Tenay, Tony Schiavone, and Larry Zbyszko We start Nitro off with Bischoff, Hogan, and Randy Savage. Savage has a neckbrace on. Hogan without the belt. Did he lose it in the 'other company' he competes in every week? Damn, there's a LOT of signs tonight. Hogan cuts a promo against Piper, and demands he give him his title back tonight. We then get a replay of DDP hitting the Diamond Cutter on Savage the week before. The Trio talk about Piper and whether he'd give the belt back. Match One: Psicosis vs. Eddie Guerrero(c) for the WCW Cruiserweight Championship Eddie has new tights, and theme music. The song is his more traditional music, but damn is it pornographic sounding. Also, the Inferno/Jacqueline match is non-title. It's also worth nothing that Psicosis is sans Sonny Onoo. Further, Charles Robinson is debuting tonight a the ref of this match. Short contest that sees Eddie win pretty easily with the Frog Splash. Winner, and STILL WCW Cruiserweight Championship: Eddie Guerrero. Guerrero tries to take the mask off of Psicosis, but fails. *1/2 We get another Lucha Libre video package. Tenay blatantly points out that the mask is a huge part of the culture and is very traditional. Both Psicosis and Rey Mysterio Jr. note that they don't want to lose their matches as 'it could be the end of their career. Mean Gene in the ring with Roddy Piper. Piper cuts a promo of on Hogan, and again states that Hall and Nash WILL defend the belts tonight. Nitro Girl dance off. At least their definition of dance. Match Two: Steve Regal vs. Steve 'Mongo' McMichael We are told that Hennig/Flair will indeed happen at Halloween Havoc. Mongo makes short work of Regal as he wins with a Tombstone Piledriver. Winner by pinfall: Mongo McMichael SQUASH Mean Gene out again with Debra McMichael. Debra informs us that Jeff Jarrett is no longer in WCW. Mongo makes a misonigyst remark, to a f ace pop. Uh.. Debra says she has a backplan for Mongo. Match Three: Yuji Nagata w/Sonny Onoo vs. Chris Jericho Sonny Onoo cuts a promo on Ultimo Dragon, and says Yuji Nagata will destroy Dragon at Slim Jim's Halloween Havoc. USA chant to start off this contest. I'm sure Jericho appreciated that. Both men end up outside, where Jericho attacks Onoo. This proves to be Jericho's downfall as he climbs the turnbuckle, Onoo pushes him off, and Nagata wins with a reverse figure four. Winner by submission: Yuji Nagata *1/4 Needed more time. Raven promo where he cuts. He's in a nursery near a crib. Interesting stuff, at least. Match Four: Bill Goldberg vs. Scotty Riggs Goldberg now has Invasion, but his intro lacks all the crazy pyro. I gotta admit that one is weird. Also, no more American Males for Riggs. In another strange bit of foreshadowing, Raven, Saturn and Sick Boy are together in the crowd. Last week it was Kidman, now it's Riggs. Riggs dropkicks Goldberg, but Goldberg has to propel himself over the ropes to fall out. Aside from that, Goldberg still wins with a delayed standing suplex. Winner by pinfall: Bill Goldberg (4-0) - He had a Saturday Night match against Roadblock Tony informs us that his finishing move is the Jackhammer. Still no sign of the spear. SQUASH We get more shilling of Nitro Parties. Of course this is followed by more Nitro Girls. Talk about Shake and Bounce. -- Hell, I'm not telling you anything that you don't already know.. Match Five: Disco Inferno(c) vs. Diamond Dallas Page w/Kimberly for the WCW World Television Championship
DDP in control for the majority of the contest, and even hits the Diamond Cutter on Inferno, but Savage is out and causes a DQ. Winner by DQ: DDP (Disco Retains) *1/4 Savage pulls the protective covering off, and looks to piledrive DDP, but Piper is out jawing with Savage. Things look heated, but DDP hits Savage with the Diamond Cutter for good measure. nWo members checking on Savage as EMTs are out checking on Savage. Tony and crew, being the compassionate human beings they are, insult Savage. While it stays in kayfabe, it really paints the trio as complete asses. Mean Gene in the ring interviewing Piper. After a few minutes of rambling about he announces it will be Hall and Nash defending the belts next week on Nitro. Savage/DDP at Halloween Havoc will be a last man standing match. Hogan and Bischoff out now. Hogan talks down Piper for several minutes, talking about how Hogan is the true icon. Hogan and Piper shove each other, Bischoff interferes and.. Hogan start stripping Piper of his clothes. Hogan then proceeds to choke Piper for the hell of it. Piper and Hogan duking it out as the rest of the nWo out and pull Hogan away from Piper. Nitro Girls again, before we get some more info on the Lucha Libre. Mike Tenay talks briefly about El Santo, and Gory Guerrero. They even talk about When Worlds Collide. Good stuff there. Match Six: Eddie Guerrero(c) vs. Ultimo Dragon for the WCW Cruiserweight Championship We are told that Savage won't face Benoit, and instead it'll be Hennig/Benoit. I approve. Great TV match between these two, Dragon looks to win with the Dragon Sleeper, but Eddie gets out, hits the Frog Splash, and wins. Winner, and STILL WCW Crusierweight Champion: Eddie Guerrero **1/4 We go to the announce booth where they talk about Benoit/Hennig that happened on WCW Saturday Night the other night. That match ended when Konnan and Norton came out and it ended with a three on one. Main Event: Chris Benoit vs. Curt Hennig(c) for the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship As Hennig greets fans, Benoit attacks from behind! Another good match that that sees both men put it all out in the ring. Despite having the early advantage, Chris Benoit falls to the Hennigplex. Winner, and STILL WCW United States Heavyweight Champion: Curt Hennig ***1/4 Clean win for Hennig, but the nWo out and are destroying Benoit. Ric Flair is out! Flair knocks out Vincent, Bagwell, and Konnan as he chases Hennig to the back. Hennig runs as far as he can, and Flair eventually goes back into the arena. Mean Gene with Ric Flair. Flair grabs the mic and cuts a promo on Hennig.and the rest of the nWo. He says that's he's gonna destroy Hennig at Halloween Havoc, then says Hogan is next. What a Nitro. WCW actually looked good against the nWo the entire night. Yeah Benoit lost in the end, but it was for the most part all WCW. Lots of good matches, good buildup to Halloween Havoc (which I still have two more Nitros to go through) and good storytelling. Good Nitro. 8/10 TV Rating: 3.9 Other Nitro Notes: 1. Brian Pillman was a hell of a talent, and for what very brief amount of time I saw him in WCW, I could tell he was head and shoulders above everyone else. That's probably why he was a Horsemen, competed in the very first Nitro match, and was booked against Booker Kevin Sullivan before Benoit's feud with him. I also feel that his gimmick would have worked far better in today's day and age than it did in the mid 90's. -- Hell, I'm not telling you anything that you don't already know.. WCW Nitro
Airdate: October 6th, 1997 Arena/Location: Target Center in Minneapolis, MN Hour One Commentators: Mike Tenay, Tony Schiavone, and Larry Zbyszko Before the opening video, WCW extends it's thoughts and prayers to Brian Pillman, who died the day before. After the opening video, we get the Nitro Girls. Typical dance numb- wait, is that a nipple? Yep, Brian Pillman tribute and the Nitro Nipple in the span of thirty seconds. Hogan and Bischoff out. Hogan claims he's been putting the title up week after week while Sting never shows up. These two yammer on for several moments, then we get a preview of Hogan's newest (TV) movie, Assault on Devil's Island. Hogan then goes on to say he's considering taking over Turner's Networks. Right. Match One: Jeff Jarrett w/Debra vs. Booker T w/Jacqueline Tenay wonders how well Booker T will do as a single's wrestler. Larry says he'll do fine. I see him winning the World Title in about three years. Back and forth contest here. Jarrett trying everything he can to put Booker down. At first it doesn't work too well, but it eventually starts to grind at Booker T. Mongo runs and argues with Debra. Jarrett tries to interfere, but he gets knocked out for his trouble. Booker T is able to get the win. Winner by pinfall: Booker T *1/2 The Trio talk about Hogan/Piper at Halloween Havoc, which is in a cage. We are then told the main event is Chris Benoit vs. Randy Savage. Chances that ends cleanly? 1.5%. In what must be a cheap product endorsement, Zbyszko plugs Bengay while talking down Savage. Odd. Match Two: Billy Kidman vs. Alex Wright Raven is in the crowd with Perry Saturn! Tenay notes they've had a long term association in 'another wrestilng promotion.' Hmm. Partway through the match, we go to the back where Mongo and Debra are arguing. Double Hmm.. Wright is being rather cocky and can't quite get the win, while Kidman is constantly distracted by Raven and Saturn. Wright though eventually edges the win after a German Suplex Pin. Winner by pinfall: Alex Wright *1/4 More Nitro girls w/ Nitro Party shilling. Jeez, I don't remember this stuff at all. Match Three: Mortis w/James Vandenberg vs. Ernest Miller We are told that Disco Inferno and Jacqueline will fight at Halloween Havoc for the TV Title. Interesting Not a great match. Miller is greener than Mortis' attire. Despite that, Ernest wins with a kick from the top rope. Winner by pinfall: Ernest Miller 1/2* Hour Two Commentators Mike Tenay, Tony Schiavone, and Bobby Heenan Hall and Syxx out. Hall's ribs are now taped up. Hall does the survery, cuts a promo against Larry Zbyszko and Luger. He claims Nash is injured because he fell off a stool while watching Larry Zbyszko matches and injured his knee. Honestly, I think that'd be a legit excuse Nash would use >_>. Match Four: Scott Hall w/Syxx vs. Hector Garza Just like the last few matches, Hall is intimidating the ref while Syxx blatantly interferes. Hall still dominates this match, as he destroys Garza with the Outsider's Edge. Winner by pinfall: Scott Hall Hall has the ref raise his hand as Syxx attacks him from behind. Hall puts the ref in the Torture Rack for the hell of it. He then sprays a 'Z' on the ref. SQUASH We go to the announce booth as they theorize that Ric Flair may be in his 'hometown' tonight. Wait, what? They then talk about Bill Goldberg, before we get a brief viewpoint on his football career and two matches thus far. After a break, we get some more Nitro girls. All are wearing more conservative tops. I wonder why <_<. -- Hell, I'm not telling you anything that you don't already know.. They were used partly to keep the crowds entertained during the commercial breaks, but they also were used to get the crowd pumped once the show went live again. My assumption is that Bischoff and brass figured the fans at home would like a lively and hot crowd instead of one that sat on their hands the entire time.
Of course, after what happened on the next Nitro I'm gonna do, most male fans kept a very close eye on the dance numbers.. Sounds vaguely familiar but not by name, no.
I've checked through most of my Late 1996/early 1997 reviews, and I can't find a jobber's name I didn't know. Maybe it was far earlier than that. To be fair, Giant had just had a match. Still doesn't help that Sting manhandled seven guys without a weapon. Of course, it wasn't a typical nWo 'gang' beatdown, rather they just came at Sting one on one. But that just makes things sillier! -- Hell, I'm not telling you anything that you don't already know.. My WCW watchfest topic Part II: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/8-gamefaqs-contests/59893341 |

Hour Two Commentators: Mike Tenay, Tony Schiavone, and Bobby Heenan
Hour two kicks off with Savage and Elizabeth out. Savage cuts a promo on Piper. Match Five: Jeff Jarrett w/Debra vs. Steve 'Mongo' McMichael Huge Jarrett sucks chant to start this match off. This match got lots of time, which made it gradually worse since I had to suffer through a Mongo match. Jarrett eventually wins with a rollup (with feet on the ropes.. for leverage) Winner by pinfall: Jeff Jarrett 1/2* Nitro Girls again. Syxx and Scott Hall out. Scott Hall on crutches. Hall with the survey, which seems to be mostly pro nWo. Hall then cuts a promo on Lex Luger and Larry Zbyszko. Match Six: Syxx w/Scott Hall vs. Chris Jericho Syxx looks as though he's gonna win with the Buzzkiller, but Scott Hall gets in the ring and toys with the referee, which includes pulling his shirt up and patting his large gut. Larry Zbyszko out now and kicks Syxx off Jericho. Luger out and Hall and Syxx bolt. Zbyszko checks on Jericho as the three men stand in the ring. No Contest N/R We go to the announce booth where Ric Flair is on the phone. Flair cuts a promo on Hogan and says he'll come back and and get his robe and finish his business with Hennig. Flair then tells Benoit and Mongo McMichael to go their own ways. He is disbanding the Four Horsemen. We get video from the first ever Nitro Party winner. These are med students that do Nitro parties. Instead of seeing the actual party, we just get random interviews with people. Eric Bischoff (sans facial hair) out. He cuts a promo against Sting, and claims Sting showed up when he knew Hogan wasn't around. When IS he around? He then says that Sting and Piper are in collusion. Match Seven: Lex Luger vs. Wrath w/James Vandenberg We are told that Mongo McMichael and Jeff Jarrett will be at Halloween Havoc. Lots of matches being announced early. WWE, take a note. Basic squash match that sees Luger win with the Torture Rack. Winner by submission: Lex Luger SQUASH More Nitro girls before the main event. Main Event: The Giant vs. Curt Hennig(c) for the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship Bischoff randomly joins the announce booth. Yes, another match with Tony and Eric. The highlight of this match is that Hennig is able to hit the Giant with the Hennigplex. More shocking is The Giant kicks out. Giant does the kip-up (with ropes), chokeslams Hennig and... nWo rush the ring. DQ. Winner by DQ: The Giant (Hennig Retains) 3/4* Giant does his best against seven men, but Norton clocks Giant with the US Belt. Sting out now. The nWo exits the ring, then attacks Sting. Sting able to hold his own against seven men.. without the bat. Giant isn't able to do it, but Sting can? The show ends with Sting clearing house. Lots of hype for Slim Jim's Halloween Havoc. There's still about four Nitros before the show, and already we got most of the card down. That's a good thing. The matches on this Nitro though was about what I've come to expect. A few decent TV matches, one or two squashes thrown in, and that's about it. Not as many Mean Gene sightings, which wasn't that bad either. Overall another above average Nitro, but I've seen better. 6/10 TV Rating: 4.0 Other Nitro Notes: 1. Bill Goldberg's 1st Theme was NOT Invasion. But another song apparently called Twisted. It's not THAT bad, actually. -- Hell, I'm not telling you anything that you don't already know.. My WCW watchfest topic Part II: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/8-gamefaqs-contests/59893341 |

WCW Nitro
Airdate: September 29th, 1997 Arena/Location: Centrum Centre in Worcester, MA Hour One Commentators: Mike Tenay, Tony Schiavone, and Larry Zbyszko We start Nitro off with the Nitro Girls. After that, we go to the announce booth where the announcers talk about the DDP/Savage feud. They then show the buildup and matches they've had thus far. Match One: Diamond Dallas Page vs. Buff Bagwell w/Vincent They hype up the rest of the matches on the card, particuarly the main event of The Giant/Curt Hennig. Chances that match ends clearnly? 2%. Raven (and Stevie Richards) are in the crowd. Bagwell at one point feigns and injry only to attack DDP when his back is turned. The match ends with DDP accidentally clocking the ref. Vincent and Bagwell try to get the upper hand, but DDP hits a Diamond Cutter on BOTH men and gets the win. Winner by pinfall: DDP DDP/Raven have a confrontation after the match as DDP leaves through the crowd. Hmm... *1/4 We get a video package for the Lucha Libre narrated by Mike Tenay. Nothing is shown, but hypes up what will be seen in future parts. That's actually a smart thing WCW did. Match Two: Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. El Caliente 'El Caliente' is wearing the outfit of another Luchadore jobber that was on Nitro some months back, but for the life of me I don't remember his name. Jakyl, do you know of another WCW jobber that wore a half red/half green mask with mostly red tights? Back and forth contest here. At one point, 'El Caliente' tries to rip off Mysterio's mask. Everyone has realized it's Eddie Guerrero under that familiar mask. Mysterio however is able to get the win with his springboard hurricarana. Winner by pinfall: Rey Mysterio Jr. Mysterio is able to rip off the mask, as the crowd cheers and sees it is truly Eddie Guerrero. *3/4 Mean Gene interviews The Giant. Giant cut a promo on Hennig, stating that paybacks are hell. Back from break, and we see Sting in the crowd. Match Three: Bill Goldberg vs. The Barbarian Mike Tenay tells us that some background of Goldberg. You know, if this was done say ten years later, all the announcers would have to do is go to Wikipedia for about five minutes. Jeez, Technology Marches On, much? Back and forth contest. The Barbarian is able to hit his Super B2B Suplex, but Goldberg kicks out at two. Unless I'm hearing things, I swear I heard a Goldberg chant. Goldberg is able to come out with his second win after another delayed standing suplex. Winner by pinfall: Bill Goldberg (2-0) Mean Gene tries to interview Goldberg again, but to no avail. SQUASH Mean Gene interviews Larry Zbyszko instead. Zbyszko says he'll call the match 'down the middle,' because it'll embarrass Scott Hall that much more. Another Nitro Girl Danceoff. There's five of them. Man, they really shilled the hell out of Nitro Parties. At the announce booth, Tony informs us we'll see Ric Flair later tonight. Nice. Match Four: Juventud Guerrera vs. Disco Inferno(c) for the WCW World Television Championship For as weird Disco Inferno's gimmick was, it's damn funny. Decent back and forth contest in the ring. As that's going on, Alex Wright (wearing the brightest yellow pants I've ever seen) is at the ramp doing his dance. You KNOW you have a ****ed up fashion sense if WCW's announcers call you out on it. Wright tries to get involved, and nearly costs Disco the belt. Jacqueline runs out and makes sure Disco retain by tripping up Juvi. Winner and STILL WCW World Television Champion: Disco Inferno Is.. is this a weird three way love triangle? *1/2 -- Hell, I'm not telling you anything that you don't already know.. Hour Two Commentators: Mike Tenay, Tony Schiavone, and Bobby Heenan
Tony and crew recall what happened during Hour One. Match Five: Psicosis, La Parka, and Los Villano vs. Ultimo Dragon, Juventud Guerrera, Ciclope, and Lizmark Jr. in a Lucha Libre Rules match A cluster**** that's pretty typical with the Lucha Libre matches. After everyone nearly kills everybody else, Juventud Guerrera gets the win over La Parka. Winners by pinfall: Dragon/Guerrera/Ciclope/Lizmark Jr. Crazy match as usual. *1/2 Mean Gene in the ring as he introduces Roddy Piper. Piper (still wearing that gawdy outfit) makes the major announcement. Larry Zbyszko will be the special guest referee between Hall and Luger and Halloween Havoc. That's... That's it? Lee Marshall is in Worcester, MA schilling Nitro from the Centrum Centre. Match Six: Steiner Brothers w/Ted Dibiase vs. Faces of Fear Steiners in control for the majority of the contest, but in yet another shocker, Meng is able to get the win when he hits the Tongan Death Grip on Rick Steiner. Winners by pinfall: Faces of Fear *1/4 Eric Bischoff and Hollywood Hogan out. Hogan has Flair's robe (minus the sleeves. Does he ever wear a shirt with sleeves?) Hogan cuts a promo against Sting and Roddy Piper. Match Seven: Randy Savage w/Elizabeth vs. Stevie Richards Savage cuts a promo against DDP for Halloween Havoc. He then says that he wants Elizabeth to manage Curt Hennig tonight. Stevie getting his ass handed to him. At one point, Savage throws Richards at the railing near Raven. Raven stands up and.. does nothing. Savage wins with the Flying Elbow. Winner by pinfall: Randy Savage SQUASH Raven out. He stares down Savage and.. DDTs Stevie Richards. Match Eight: Booker T w/Jacqueline vs. nWo (Konnan/Norton) w/Vincent in a Handicap match This was supposed to be Harlem Heat and Konnan and Norton, but apparently Stevie Ray was injured. Booker T holds his own for a few minutes, but it eventually turns into a 3 on 1 that results in a DQ. Winner by DQ: Booker T 3/4* Three Nitro Girls do a dance set. Why three? Who knows. Main Event: Jeff Jarrett w/Debra vs. Curt Hennig(c) w/Elizabeth for the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship Hennig in control for the majority of the match. It appears Jarrett might win it with the Figure Four, but Savage is out and hits Jarrett with the US Title. Hennig gets the win after the Hennigplex. Winner, and STILL WCW United State Heavyweight Champion: Curt Hennig ** Hennig celebrate as the show ends. Lots of 'shocking' wins all night. While there was several decent matches, it wsa really weird that they tried to push all these surprises for seemingly no reason. Still, this is the debut of Bill Goldberg, so it's pretty important in WCW history. 5.5/10 TV Rating: 3.7 Another drop for Nitro. At least Raw's ratings fell as well. Other Nitro Notes: 1.Tony keeps calling Hugh Morrus Humorous. Okay then. 2. A longstanding rumor is that Bill Goldberg debuted months earlier as one of the guys of Piper's family. How old is the rumor? DDTDigest (a website that covered WCW shows when it was still live) called this as true as far back as the week after he debuted. As I said when I covered that Nitro, Goldberg was NOT part of the Piper's Third Family. 3. Inferno/Jacqueline was supposed to happen earlier in the year (I think at Uncensored) but I think Disco didn't want to lose to Jacqueline. 4. There were several nWo paid announcements that was showing the Four Horsemen parody. -- Hell, I'm not telling you anything that you don't already know.. WCW Nitro
Airdate: September 22nd, 1997 Arena/Location: E Center in Salt Lake City, Utah Hour One Commentators: Mike Tenay, Tony Schiavone, and Larry Zbyszko We start Nitro off with the Nitro Girls. Nitro Girls going hrough the crowd as they start doing their dance set. After the opening video, Tony and crew tells us that Hennig/Jarrett for the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship tonight. There's also a MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT from Roddy Piper tonight. Eric Bischoff is out. He grabs a headset, and warns Zbyszko to stay out of matches. Zbyszko has footage from Great American Bash 1996 where Hall and Nash attacked Bischoff. Larry calls Bischoff a gutless coward because he ran to the nWo after that Match One: Silver King vs. Rey Mysterio Jr. Larry then berates Tony Schiavone for leaving the week before. Partway through the match, Eddie Guerrero is out. Crowd's pretty hot for Mysterio. He hits the springboard hurricarana for the win. Winner by pinfall: Rey Mysterio Jr. Guerrero is taunting Mysterio, and for his trouble Rey hits him with another springboard maneuver. Rey poses with the belt. *1/4 Match Two: Bill Goldberg vs. Hugh Morrus Tony says they know nothing about this Goldberg guy. Even Mike Tenay is stumped on who he is. Squash? Morrus hits a diving clothesline on Goldberg followed by No Laughing Matter. Morrus for the pin and.. Goldberg kicked out?! Morrus with a back elbow, which Goldberg doesn't sell. Goldberg with a backflip... for absolutely no reason. After a few slams, Goldberg wins with a delayed standing suplex. Winner by pinfall: Bill Goldberg (1-0) SQUASH Goldberg looks into the camera and says 'that's one.' After a replay, Mean Gene tries to interview Goldberg, but Goldberg refuses to talk to him. Tony and crew shill Nitro parties as the Nitro Girls dance. We then get video of what happened at Fall Brawl between Larry and Scott Hall. Match Three: Disco Inferno vs. Alex Wright(c) for the WCW World Television Championship We see Raven is watching from the crowd. That's new. Back and forth contest here. Crowd is really into Disco Inferno. This has been a decent crowd all night. In a relatively big shocker, Disco Inferno is able to win this one (and the title) after both men go for a crossbody, and Inferno takes advantage! Winner, and NEW WCW World Television Champion: Disco Inferno ** Disco is selling an arm injury as Jacqueline(?!) is out and drags Mean Gene to the ring. She wants to talk to Disco Inferno. She tells us that we ALL know why Disco was gone for six months. We do? Jacqueline says she can beat Disco Inferno. Inferno ignores the challenge. Hall and Syxx are out. For the first time ever, Scott Hall does the survey. Hall taunts Larry Zbyszko. He then calls out Lex Luger. After a few seconds, Hall call Luger a coward. Then Hall calls out Larry. Larry runs down, and after he tries to get Syxx out of the ring, Hall calls him a coward. Match Four: Scott Hall w/Syxx vs. Hector Garza Hall is goofing off in the ring. as Garza comes to the ring. Hall proceeds to destroy Garza. After hitting a super Fallaway Slam, Hall picks on Referee Mark Curtis. This backfires terrible as Hector Garza comes from behind and gets the pin! Winner by pinfall: Hector Garza Scott Hall, upset at the lost, hits the Outsider's Edge on Garza and Mark Curtis. N/R -- Hell, I'm not telling you anything that you don't already know.. The only two WCW 1995 PPVs I saw were Havoc and World War 3. I didn't see Fall Brawl at the time because I wasn't sure if I was going to watch the PPVs, and I couldn't even find Starrcade 1995 online. Which is a shame, because it has a pretty decent card.

I should feel bad that you're dealing with the entirety of WWF 1995 PPVs while I (thankfully) only had to deal with three months of that year. Then I realized that I saw a Sumo Monster Truck match, The Giant thrown off a building and being completely fine a few minutes later, Luger/Meng in a near 15 minute match that ended in a DQ, Savage squashing Brutus the Zodiac Man with No Disciples and later Luger in one night, and a mummy (named after a creature that doesn't exist and later became a Ninja) hump Hogan. And that was all on one PPV.
So consider yourself.. Lucky? -- Hell, I'm not telling you anything that you don't already know.. My WCW watchfest topic Part II: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/8-gamefaqs-contests/59893341 |

Hour Two Commentators: Bobby Heenan, Mike Tenay, and Larry Zbyszko
Nitro Girls start hour two by doing another set. Match Six: Stevie Richards w/Half shirt vs. Diamond Dallas Page w/Kimberly Stevie Richards puts up a valiant effort, but DDP gets the win after a Fireman's Carry into a Diamond Cutter. Winner by pinfall: DDP Raven and DDP stare down, but Raven attacks Richards after the match. *1/4 Lee Marshall is in Salt Lake City, Utah schilling Nitro from the brand new E Center. How new? The first show to be there was the next Monday Nitro! Nice trivia, bad puns. Match Seven: Mortis and Wrath w/James Vandenberg vs. The Outsiders(c) w/Syxx for the WCW World Tag Team Championships I thought the Steiners were the #1 Contenders? I guess Mortis and Wrath have been doing well lately. Mortis and Wrath actually hold their own against Hall (and Nash) for the majority of this contest. At several points it even looks like they might get the shocking win, but the timely interference of Scott Hall with a clothesline to Mortis sets the course for the Outsiders to retain. Nash wins with the cocky pin. Winners, and STILL WCW World Tag Team Champions: The Outsiders If this was a properly built up feud, I bet anything this would have been a good match. This was a decent tag match. Oh well. *1/2 Eric Bischoff out after a break. He introduces the rest of the group. Hogan plays guitar with the belt, which is the first time I recall him doing that. Hennig (with a Flair red robe on) comes out last. He's out to Flair's music, to boot. Hennig cuts a promo on Flair and Anderson, then hands the robe to Hogan. "This day has been perfect." Oh ha ha. Savage says it would be an honor to go against DDP at HH. Hogan now cuts a promo against Piper. It's weird seeing Hogan do the crotch chop, by the way. After yammering on for several minutes, the nWo finally leaves. The announcing trio talks about Hogan and Piper, before we get a video of the previous matches between Hogan and Piper. Match Eight: Ultimo Dragon vs. Eddie Guerrero(c) WCW Cruiserweight Championship Eddie in control for the majority of the contest, and wins convincingly with the Frog Splash. Winner, and STILL WCW Cruiserweight Champion: Eddie Guerrero **1/2 Main Event:Mongo McMichael(c) vs. Curt Hennig for the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship Michael Buffer doing intros for this match. Hennig works over Mongo's knee, and Mongo sells it during the match. Mongo though tries to come back and get the win, but fails once Hennig puts him in the Hennigplex and gets the win. Winner, and NEW WCW United States Heavyweight Champion: Curt Hennig Hennig celebrates as Nitro goes off the air. 3/4* Lots of action on this Nitro. Not many squashes, which is good. Mostly clean wins, another postive. Hennig winning hte US Belt was alright, since I didn't really want to see Mongo with a long reign with that belt. They also set up Halloween Havoc's two big matches as well, which was a plus. 6.5/10 TV Rating: 3.9 Slightly down from the week before, but still strong. -- Hell, I'm not telling you anything that you don't already know.. WCW Nitro
Airdate: September 15th, 1997 Arena/Location: Independence Arena in Charolette North Carolina We start off Nitro with an image of Ric Flair in the hospital. He's got a large gash in his head. Flair looks pretty damn bad. Whether that's just makeup or the actual bladejob he did, I'm not sure. We go to the announce booth where Tony is talking about Ric Flair, and how he went to bat for him. Tony starts to choke up and leaves the announce booth. Why did he show up if he was just going to leave not two minutes in? Hour One Commentators: Mike Tenay and Larry Zbyszko We get some stills from the Wargames match, most notably Benoit and Bagwell. They then showed Hennig slamming Flair's head in the cage. Match One: Disco Inferno vs. Dean Malenko Malenko way over in North Carolina. He got a great pop at Fall Brawl, and an equally decent pop here. Malenko is selling the knee injury for the majority of this contest. Disco tries to take advantage, but Malenko is able to get the win after applying the Texas Cloverleaf. Winner by submission: Dean Malenko *1/2 For some bizarre reason, after the match, we get the standard Opening Video, before they go to break. We go to the back where Mark Madden and new Cruiserweight Champion Eddie Guerrero are doing online commentary, or something. Match Two: Faces of Fear vs. Harlem Heat w/ Jacqueline We are told that there will be four title matches tonight. TV, US, CW, and Tag Team. Hah, like Hogan would defend the belt on Nitro.. wait. Stevie Ray plays face in peril, big tag on Booker T. Heatseeker on Barbarian, but he's not the legal man. Booker T walks into the Tongan Death Grip, and Meng gets the win. Winner by submission: Faces of Fear I would've bet Heat would win. * Nitro Girl number. More shilling of the Nitro Parties. Mean Gene is with Kimberly (and DDP.) DDP tells us he's got a disease. A sickness even. I was almost convinced he'd say it was 'more cowbell', but that joke didn't show up till about three years after this. Instead, the disease was Randy Savage. DDP says he's the cure. He calls out Savage for (Slim Jim's) Halloween Havoc. He says don't bring the Slim Jims, he's got something *DDP Symbol* to snap into! Match Three: Juventud Guerrera vs. Rey Mysterio Jr. Rey Mysterio starts the show off by taking off his mask (mask underneath) and giving it to a fan. Hm... Fast paced match that sees Mysteiro get the win after a springboard hurricarana. Winner by pinfall: Rey Mysterio Jr. Mysterio calls out Konnan. **3/4 Match Four: Steve Regal vs. Alex Wright(c) for the WCW World TV Championship Regal apparently plays the face here. Crowd chants for Regal over Wright. Relatively stiff contest between these two. Suprisingly, Regal loses this one in just minutes to Wright after a German Suplex. Winner, and STILL WCW World Television Champion: Alex Wright *1/4 Mean Gene with Ray Traylor. Traylor demands a match against an nWo member. During his tirade, he causes Curt Hennig Mr. Perfect. Whoops! Match Five: Konnan vs. Giant Raven is in the audience. He was shown earlier, but he's not doing anything. So.. wee. Squash match pretty much that sees Giant win with the Chokeslam. Aside from the last match swerve, I'd put this up as one of the best WCW PPVs I've seen thus far. Every match prior to the last two matches were good, clean matches. Even the ending to the tag team prior to WarGames made sense in a weird way. Hell, the actual swerve that Hennig was nWo all along makes sense if you take it in context.
Considering all that, the ending was bad. Hennig should have remained a face, at least for some time after this. The last thing the nWo needed was yet another guy in their group. Bad swerve and ending to an otherwise great PPV. 7.5/10 PPV Buyrate: .53 - which is actually the worst buyrate for a WCW Sunday PPV in 1997 (Souled Out was on a Saturday.) Expect the 9/15/97 Nitro shortly. I'm going to try and finish the rest of 1997 up on a Five days per week schedule. -- Hell, I'm not telling you anything that you don't already know.. Bobby Eaton? He was a heel during that period, but was with Lord Steven Regal and Squire David Taylor as part of the Blue Bloods.
The only generic heel theme I've heard used by multiple guys would be the Hollywood Blonde's theme. If I was able to access more B and C-shows on a consistent basis, I might be of more use to you, man. Sorry. Anyways, here's Fall Brawl for those that missed it: Jericho/Eddie for the Cruiserweight title was a decent opener that really picked up during the second half. The crowd was sort of dead, but it was some good in-ring action. The match ended with Eddie reversing a superplex, followed by a Frog Splash to win the Cruiserweight Title. ***1/4 Steiners/Heat had a decent tag team match up that saw the Steiners win (and prove they are the #1 Contenders) after they pinned Stevie Ray following a double team German Suplex/Clothesline. **3/4 Wright/Dragon ended with Wright retaining the WCW TV Championship after he reversed the Dragon Sleeper into a Dragon Sleeper and hit the German Suplex to get the win. Three straight clean wins thus far. Good match. *** In the back Mean Gene is hocking the old hotline as the four nWo members of the WarGames run by twice. Mean Gene plays detective and finds Hennig out. Well damn. In the match of the night, Jarrett/Malenko put on a great technical match that displayed the talent both men had. Jarrett proved that with the right person he could put on excellent matches. Both men had a back and forth contest, but Jarrett was able to pick up the win (and #1 Contendership for the US Title) after making Malenko tap to the Figure Four Leglock. In the surprise of the night, Wrath and Mortis/Faces of Fear had a surprisingly decent match out of each other, considering one of the workers was The Barbarian. The highlight of this match was a superplex from Mortis on Barbarian while Wrath had Mortis on his shoulders, delivering a double superplex. Wrath picked up the win after a Death Penalty to Meng. *3/4 Giant/Norton had short back and forth match that really displayed Giant's speed. If you count Giant doing a kip-up (using the ropes) and hitting a dropkick his 'speed.' Giant wins after hitting a chokeslam. 3/4* DDP and Luger/Hall and Savage had another decent match, but at the cost of the first nonclean ending. Back and forth contest here, but things start getting screwy around the time Luger is pushed between the two rings. DDP is literally thrown from one ring to another by Savage. Scott Hall attacks referees Mark Curtis and Mickey Jay. As he does this, Larry Zbyszko (who was doing commentary) runs to the ring. After jawing with Scott Hall, he gets in the ring once he sees Luger crawling out from between the rings. Larry pushes Hall into Luger, and counts the pin. Why Larry was able to count the pin I don't know. It was a weird ending, but it really did build up to Hall/Zbyszko.. which I really don't want to see. Good match, strange ending. **1/2 In the WarGames match, the nWo beat the Four Horsemen after Curt Hennig (who had an apparent arm injury) took off his arm wrap thing, had handcuffs, and.. Handcuffed Benoit and Mongo to the cage! It's basically a 5 on 1 on Flair. Benoit and Mongo refused to quit, but Mongo eventually gave up when they threatened to smash Flair's head with the cage door. Mongo quit and the nWo won. After Mongo quit, Curt Hennig STILL guillotined (their word, not mine) Flair. Flair apparently bladed, and the PPV was done. **3/4 -- Hell, I'm not telling you anything that you don't already know.. Personally, I think we're gonna see a change in the announce team disposition. Cole during Raw was less heel than usual, and really didn't do any of his cheap burials. Lawler on the other hand was acting more of the heel than usual. Personally I think Lawler might go back to his old corporate heel role that he had, but I'm not so sure.

Tuesday at 6:00 PM CDT: I will be having a watchfest for WCW's Fall Brawl 1997! I know some of you haven't been a fan of the noon watchfests, well this is your chance to get in on the action with it going back to night time.
I'll probably have the card up (no spoilers) either tomorrow or Monday. -- Hell, I'm not telling you anything that you don't already know.. My WCW watchfest topic Part II: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/8-gamefaqs-contests/59893341 |

Chronic1000 posted... As most of you know by now, I've been doing a WCW Nitro (and now PPV and soon to be Thunder) watchthrough topic. Well, today I've stumbled upon an angle that even back then would've been tasteless and wrong, but nowadays is just eerie and really twisted. You just got to watch it. I dunno. I remember seeing this when it aired, not knowing what happened with owen because I was WCW all the way. I just thought it was them making fun of sting and liked it! The thing is that bit actually happened a year and a half BEFORE Owen Hart died. Looking at it today, it looks bad and like a horribly tasteless reference to what happened (something WCW actually tried to do in a completely DIFFERENT angle, but much more on that when I get there) but this was way before what happened to Owen. -- Hell, I'm not telling you anything that you don't already know.. | Chronic1000 08/19/11 11:41:00 AM #51 | As I pointed out above, Mark Curtis was a really small wrestler, while the fan was a bit of the hefty side. It's funny to note that Dean and Psicosis also attack the fan for all of two seconds before remembering 'aw s***, we're in a match!" -- Hell, I'm not telling you anything that you don't already know.. Definitely some good hype in there for Fall Brawl, some good matches as well. Of course the entire Mannequin bit really made this uncomfortable. While it wasn't exactly in good taste in 1997 before Owen Hart's death, it's still eerie as hell to watch. Discounting that, not a bad Nitro all around. 6.5/10
TV Rating: 4.3, which is good considering they were against Raw, which got a measly 2.2 that week. Other Nitro Notes: 1. For some bizarre reason, Brad Armstrong has a goatee and black tights on. If you think that he's mimicking someone, give me a hell yeah! 2. Dumb Sign of the Night: Some brain surgeon decided to have a 'Deport Eddie' sign in the crowd, which they proudly displayed whenever Eddie was around. Deport Eddie Guerrero where, El Paso, Texas? 3. Hollywood Hogan Stink-o-Meter: "Number One! We don't play no more stinking games!" 4. Here's a link to the Sting mannequin bit: -- Hell, I'm not telling you anything that you don't already know..
