-Cloak of Distortion, Adventurer's Vault. Note that it has been errata'd to provide its enhancement bonus in defense, instead of -5.
-Cloak of the Chirurgeon, Adventurer's Vault.
-Cloak of the Walking Wounded, Adventurer's Vault.
-Healer's Brooch, Adventurer's vault.
-Cloak of Resistance, Player's Handbook.
-Lucky Charm, Adventurer's Vault 2.
-Periapt of Cascading Health, Dragon 369.
-Steadfast Amulet, Adventurer's Vault.

That should be good enough to start.

If I can make you a suggestion, CPU...add armor and neck item upgrades there and take out the cloaked sword. You really can't afford to waste item parcels on things that don't upgrade you.

After much, much thinking and soul-searching, I've decided to give Val a class swap, Anagram accepting. The new version of our favorite optimistic loony is something else, alright:

http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=355889

The short of it is, Valerian is less accurate, but hilariously deadly if he gets his tricks going, much more defensively powered, and ready for a nasty nova. His flavor is pretty much intact in spite of the loss of the Divine power source - in flavor terms, if the Divine source represented his martial talents, and the Primal source represents his psychic abilities (complicated enough yet?), Val will be far more attuned to his inner powers than before. Can't wait to see him set the world on fire!

Well yes, but from now on I'm taking a different tack. Up to a point, Val has tried to play the burst damage route. From now, I'm playing to outlast the opposition, and bringing the party along for the ride. You'll see once he's resurrected and the revive penalty wears off!

Oh yeah.

One comment I do have about the session is that I thought that fight was basically perfectly made. I was kind of disappointed with the previous ones for being pretty easy, but this one was a lot of fun. It's kind of sad how it got messed up by our lack of players; I think with 5 people our odds of success would have been pretty good, and of course there were also a lot of ways out of the fight built into it, since it was designed such that winning was hardly guaranteed. And the powers like the domination, cloning, and minion summoning all kept things high-paced and fresh. I'll have to look at it as a valuable resource for the solo fights I'm designing.

Thanks for the compliment! I wanted to see how various different abilities would work, so I gave them all to Eren. I was happy with the way they worked out. That said, had your domination ability worked on Eren, it's possible she would have gone the way of Marial. That's some powerful stuff when it works.

That stuff got nerfed, though. It worked about as well as it could against Eren.

Yeah, basically this. Annoying as it was to lose Val, it was a really good fight and I was at the edge of my seat 'till the very end.

(And of course, the fight has inspired me, too - but in my case, to devise ways to dismantle Ana's encounters :P)

Summary of the session:

-Boner joined, and quickly left. Not his style.
-We arrived at an elven temple, where one of the Furies had taken residence. Surprisingly, the nuns had been spared.
-Entering, we explored the temple, and performed its trials: The Trial of Wisdom, the Trial of Patience, and the Trial of Physique, except...
-The last Trial room had been demolished. Eren was waiting below. A fierce battle ensued, but in the end, missing two PCs was too much...
-And Valerian was killed, in a spiteful retaliation from Eren, after the whole team had been defeated, his heart crushed.
-Mourning Theme:
-Everybody levels up. The Survivors gain 1000 XP. Valerian gains 500, though he has died.

FD, have you ever run solo top Kayle as an ad bruiser? I ask because it wrecks faces at my elo and I'm wondering if it's just because of the skill level. It feels like no one can fight her up there. She has Janna levels of kite that doubles as ridiculous chase. And since I get near infinite sustain with wriggles it's hard to exchange with her. Plus her passive shines in lane when combined with Qs extra damage.

She gets wrecked I think. Kite is irrelevant when renekton has a double dash, Riven has 1000 units of movement that are unaffected by MS, and so on.

The problem is that riot billed themselves as the simple mans dota, so they can't actually do anything complicated.

For instance, I saw a video of one of their champion designers speaking at a conference, and he described the process for the Monkey king. In order to be true to lore, the original design had a permanent clone that was always with you, and the player needed to control both avatars. Then they realized that they were designing their most complex champion ever, which they did not feel was appropriate for the mascot champion of a new market. They went on to release the incredibly boring and bland Wukong that we have today.

And yet complexity does not equal depth. The most respected fighting game in the world is piss-easy compared to today's offerings in mechanics, but people are still discovering new things about it.

Reality check; he wouldn't be where he is without those people. The harsh reality is that despite whatever vision you have, often times you have to compromise. The difference is later in his life he has so much money he can focus on just what he wants, but he shouldn't have been surprised by the negativity that came as a result of it.

Naturally. But the thing is, George Lucas hasn't changed. I really should just post a link to the original ANH script and leave it at that, but the George we see today is exactly the same guy from way back when. The only difference is his circumstances. Lucas is basically John Romero, minus the ego and delays. Why are you acting like he's ever been different?

Lucas lost sight of what was important. A filmmaker is nothing without people to appreciate his art, and he got to a point it was more about him rather than them. If he could have just stayed how he was when I was growing up, that'd just be okay. Thanks George for all you've done despite all of that, and for what you've given me and countless others.

Of course you do work for yourself. There's no point in doing a work you're not satisfied with. Super special secret time, Spiral: the ultimate dream of every last creative person in the planet is to work on their art without anybody harassing them, without budget constraints, and with absolute freedom to do whatever the hell they like. Fans are people who are invited to take a peek into the author's inner world. The author shouldn't have to beg for the fans to feed him, nor listen to their incessant whining, nod, and do as they say, because 99% of the time, fans don't know what they want. It's one thing to draw constructive criticism from fans, but fans tend to just rage like little kids, not do anything of the sort.

If new Jax buys a BV, he can be invincible for 1.5 seconds (due to server lag, BV can actually absorb multiple spells, if they hit simultaneously). After he's finished being invincible, he AOE stuns.

I don't know if he's better now or not, my guess is that they nerfed him because his old numbers were insane. But you should play to his strengths, one of which is apparently having the best initiation in the game.

A guy who melts does not have good initiation. Literally all that the Opposing Force needs to screw you over is a skillshot and you're completely ****ed. The new Jax is basically the Extra Old Jax, also known as Spellbound Jax because he 100% folded to CC. If the enemy has a Kennen or Morg you might as well not even show up - you won't do anything in that fight. He needs his MR burst back in the worst way, seriously. Give him that again and he'll be OK, mostly.

Actually, why the hell not, mathcraft time for the people who don't know Jax.

Old Jax used to have:

-82 MR boost for six seconds. Roughly speaking, this increased your EHP by 82% while the boost was active, so really your teamfight EHP was 82% higher.
-18% innate dodge, always active. With Tabi, this combined for an effective 25% EHP boost, permanently, against autos.
-Super fast HP scaling off his passive. Mix with the above to get astronomical amounts of HP, close to what a heavily kitted tank would get. If you weren't very farmed, you could get like 500 HP over your 2k baseline. So in fights, that's 5k EHP before any base resists or anything, going from purely naked 0 MR 0 Armor values.
-140% AS roiding boost. You're not likely to get that many stacks of your passive, but since it's hard to gauge average stacks we'll go with the max. That's more than three recubows worth of AS, and something like 0.8 AS in bonuses. Coupled with your base AS, that's 1.8 AS without items. This means you can basically ignore AS as a stat.
-MS boost from Nimbleness. This made you much harder to shake off, because you have a natural movespeed of 360 when you've got a counter proc, before even boots or anything. Suffice is to say, nobody could get away from you without their own MS booster or team/tower cover.

So, what does the New Jax get?

New Jax Got:

-MR boost is gone. You lose an 82% EHP boost.
-Counterstrike is tweaked. You nullify autoattack damage for 1.5 seconds. This is hard to gauge vs the permanent 18-25% of yore, but my guess is that the latter boost is better, because you cannot screw Jax out of benefitting from it, and given his bulkiness, it adds up to more resistance over time.
-Your HP scaling is shot to hell. You get 2k HP base now, so kiss your toughness goodbye. Combine with the above changes and it's fair to say Jax is about 30% as beefy as before. 100% from defense boosts, 100% from lost HP and its multiplicative effectiveness of aforesaid boosts.
-Your AS boost is 60% at max now. You gain about 0.3 AS from it. This plus your base puts you at 1.3 AS, so you shoot about as fast as a carry with one Phantom Dancer. This is...passable I guess, but you still need to get AS to trigger your relentless assault procs.
-Roiding boosts gained. 65 AP and 65 AD. The AP is basically a pittance and worth ignoring. The AD boost is interesting though, as roughly speaking, using eyeballing and napkin math, it gives you similar performance to your previous damage. Downside being, of course, that it is contingent on not getting shut down at any point during your six seconds of buffness...and that it doesn't combo well with your Relentless Assault procs. So you suffered a damage loss from hitting with your supercharge less.

So basically, Jax's damage went down slightly, he doesn't have Nimbleness, he lost his tankiness (he doesn't have defensive scaling now. Period.), and he's ridiculously open to magical burst. I'm *probably* seeing things too darkly because Jax is one of my two favorite champions, but this kinda feels like when Morde's shield regen got cut literally in half. Something is missing. This isn't the Jax I know and love. He's...lesser. Stumped. Meaningless, without the ability to properly disengage AND the loss of the defensive boosts that let him stick to somebody after early laning. I'm just depressed right now, like the sun isn't shining as brightly as it did. Anybody care to tell me I'm wrong, that my champion is gonna be fine? Anybody? ;_;

According to some mathcrafting I read yesterday, at 200AP and 300AD it's worth ~7.6k gold, while his old passive gave you ~5.5k at the same items. I think I'm remembering that correctly...

The problem here being that you just lost synergy. Yeah, cool, you gain roflmassive gold advantage. Try telling Mundo how that colossal roiding boost works out if you can't take the heat. Much math has been done on the subject of damage vs. defense. In the end, proper mixing works much better.

PS: Also, Jax lost 80% AS - AKA two Recubows, AKA about 0.5 AS or more. That's 2100 gold...in other words, exactly as much cash as you got out of the new roiding boost. The issue is, Jax is now 100% all-in on offensive. He's like Master Yi, with stupid good offensive boosts and no way to go in without getting cooked except for one ability. I'm not convinced that this works. This feels like a nerf to me because you lost your exponential defensive scaling - so now you get a much more reduced effect from MR and armor. Not to mention Jax also lost Nimbleness, which is even more gold lost, and also a precious precious stat that you won't get back ever again.

EDIT: Incidentally, that mathcraft is completely wrong because it operated based off of TOTAL AD, not bonus. I literally just got done reading it, and I can tell you it's kind of a crock of **** that used wrong stats, wrong damage values, wrong everything. So Jax in fact LOST gold. Not a good time to be a Jumping Jax.

/sigh

I take one day off watching the topic and of course somebody puts the new one up. People just can't wait five seconds. :-/

Anyway, I'm very worried about the Jax changes. Can anybody else look at them and tell me it isn't more or less a straight nerf? The only part of him that was buffed was, naturally, Counterstrike, but that's a small mercy when he has lost more than half of his previous AS boost, his health increase, his full-AD scaling on Leapstrike, and so on. I see only two plusses to him now:

-Counterstrike is semi-safe harass because it lets you get in and get out unscathed if timed right.
-He gains an absolutely colossal roiding boost from R. I haven't done math yet, but a deathcap by itself takes you to 300 AP, and you can crack 300 AD without that much effort. Problem is, of course, that you melt under fire because you have no defensive boost...so unless you can one-touch kill, you're screwed.

Time will tell if the free harass is good enough. Gut feeling says Jax might be scary in midlane still, and another gut feeling says he's a jungler now. I don't know, but I'm curious if anybody else has any opinions.

Same. I think it'd work better if we got a bunch of people together and discussed tracks in small batches instead of '...well damn, gotta go through 150 tracks after day 1'. Like say we get the same 14 guys to redo the list, but instead of posting up a ton of nominations at once, we go through several rounds where each person puts a song forward, it gets discussed, then we add it or chuck it (and everybody gets an equal share of accepted nominations, proposing songs until he's out of content or fills his quota). Obviously this would be much more time consuming, but I'm pretty sure we'd get a much better list, too, both because we get to add more input on nominations than a simple second and because we get much more time to think things through.

Yeah. I'm almost not limiting it to 'stuff I like.' I want to actually be fair and include a wide range of things, even stuff I wouldn't normally listen to.

Stuff like, say, 'Moving Boss'?

(Context on it: This is a track that I'm pretty sure Mycroprocessor would adore, that is exceedingly complex and weird, and it was basically done in a cave with a box of scraps. Kind of like somebody playing a violin concert with a bunch of rocks and some strings made of cat hair. Back in the day it was pretty much revolutionary, because it took some serious voodoo magic to get something like t hat out of the Genesis. Kind of like Plok for the SNES I think?)

If so I approve. There's stuff that was both very traditional and pivotal in VGOST history and both very weird and innovative that got passed over. IIRC we oversaturated the list with some artists and forgot about some very important themes. Not everything HAS to be as bizarre as the link above, but representing the less known or appreciated composers alongside the board darlings would be a nice thing.

Oh, nice! That could work. There's a lot of pieces and composers that should have been on the list but weren't because we kind of went for our obscure crap (myself included). Probably a good idea to start from the basics for the list and then tack on the more obscure stuff.

Incidentally, we totally need a 'remixes to listen to' list. Normal videogame music is good, but it gets even better when you find out all the wonderful ways people have transformed it.

Bah, that's no good. A better way to tackle it would have been to just dedicate a portion of the list to 'names to know', AKA famous and respected composers (Nobuo Uematsu, Yoko Shimomura, Jesper Kyd, the Follin Bros.) and include a few selections from them, a part to 'Great Soundtracks' (Chrono Cross, Umineko, maybe historical OSTs like Dune), and a part for simple 'Random Gems' (something from Thunder Force IV, something from Rocket Knight Adventures, a piece from Unreal Tournament, etc. etc. etc.). So you could give a complete newbie to videogame music an idea of artists to check out, games to give a listen to, and simply an idea of the kind of stuff you can find if you look beneath the surface. That might be too complicated, though?

That list definitely could have used some improvements, and I wish I could have contributed more to it than I did. If you're making a new one Ed, hit me up - I've found some real good stuff since that list was made.

It's not like very similar games hadn't been made before. LoZ is effectively just Adventure on a much bigger scale with more stuff. So no, it's not especially creative at all, considering they didn't add anything especially new or exciting to the genre. What it did do was popularise these things, which is entirely different and requires zero creativity.

It's like pong, a game that gets far more credit than it deserves. It wasn't the first pong game by any means, just the first to be popular.

Now, Adventure, which created the top-down action adventure genre? Creative. ALttP, which added a ton of complex gameplay elements? Creative. But LoZ didn't do anything that hadn't been seen in action adventure games before, and lacked any of the complex creative elements of later games. The basic elements of the Zelda series had been done before Zelda, and that's really all LoZ has.

It did bring saving to consoles though, that's pretty legit. But doesn't really apply here.

So let me get this straight. LoZ is less creative than LttP? Seriously?

Perhaps we should actually let this one fill up this time. Just a thought. >_>

Also Biscuits is the best Felt member. Also I had no idea you were a hot chick LtM.

It's filled up. 20 posts left to go is a pittance. People can keep using the topic after a new one is up, but I'd rather have it up early instead of late.
