#1: Smoke N64



-This. This right here is the filet mignon of game consoles. It's a very cutting-edge, relevant design, and it's hard to believe that it came out in 1999; it looks more modern than most current-gen consoles! It's badass in a huge way, and while it may not be purple, it's still pimpin'.

#2: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Xbox 360



-This is probably the best thing the Call of Duty franchise has given us, and that's coming from someone who actually does like the games well enough. There's a gritty and downright unprecedented style to this console; it captures the essence of the series very well, while still holding a good amount of appeal to those unfamiliar with the series. Hell, even if you hate CoD - and I know many of you do - I still can't imagine you'd think this 360 is anything less than badass.

#3: Midnight Purple 3DS



-For the first time since the Grape N64, here it is: another pimp purple video game system. Also called "Waluigi Purple" by some, this 3DS was released just last month to coincide with the new Mario Tennis title. While that game was seen as a disappointment by many, it's tough to imagine anyone disliking this special edition console, which is a perfect example of a dual-color system done right. As much as I love my Red 3DS, I must admit, I wish I held off until this one came out.

Spice GameCube looks so good. Also this list is pretty clearly Nintendominated.

That's just the nature of the game! The other companies rarely release alternate colors, so Nintendo definitely has a distinct advantage here. They've been doing it since the Play It Loud Game Boys.

That Neo Geo style looks like an FFVI backdrop style selection. Looks a lot better than the other one you posted, at least.

Wow, great list so far. I wish home console games were as colorful and had a much variety as the handhelds seem to have.

As do I. Really, the N64's the only console to offer a large variety of color options; I don't know why Nintendo never tried that again.

#4: Spice GameCube



-Forget Mother 3, F-Zero Climax, Giftpia, Chibi-Robo 3... etc, etc. THIS is the all-time worst NoA snub.

...okay, not really (it's obviously Captain Rainbow, man). But I still can't believe they looked at the GameCube colors and thought: "Y'know, America's not quite ready for an orange console. Let's give 'em Grimace Purple instead." The Spice GameCube is ****ing legendary, and it's become a pretty sought after import item; I'm pretty sure these things have gone for north of $100 here. Which is pretty damn impressive, as people are practically giving away the standard NA GameCubes - even the original Xbox still fetches more on average.

#5: Vibrant Blue PSP



-PlayStation systems aren't exactly known for cutting-edge, striking designs. The PS1 was a boring ol' gray; for the most part, their other systems were a boring ol' black. There's nothing terribly wrong with any of that, I suppose, but this Vibrant Blue PSP puts them all to shame. This was originally part of a "Carnival of Colors" campaign, which also included Radiant Red, Bright Yellow and Spirited Green. All of them were good, and the Yellow and Green ones were legit great in their own right; but Vibrant Blue clearly wins.

#6: Stone Blue Neo Geo Pocket Color

-Man, I regret selling this thing. Not because it was a good system, but because it looked so damn good in my collection! Neo Geo came up with some remarkably clever designs for this little console, and for a long time, I considered this the cream of the crop as far as handhelds went. It's badass and sophisticated in equal measure; it's Michael Caine in Neo Geo Pocket form, if you will.

#7: Bronze DSi XL

-Now we're starting to get to the really top-tier stuff. With the DSi XL, Nintendo went in a very classy direction with the colors, and the Bronze one particularly succeeded in that regard. Compared to the mostly terrible colors for the original DSi, this was a welcome surprise - this is a true gentleman's handheld console.

#8: Arctic White GBA



-Long before the Wii, DS Lite, etc., there was this: Nintendo's first pure-white handheld. The brick GB was more grayish than anything, so this sleek design was pretty unprecedented and ahead of its time. The GBA had plenty of great colors, but to me, this is the clear leader of the pack.

I'm a Cracked fan, so I read this article earlier... and one of the responses in the comments really struck me. Fortunately, it got a ton of upvotes, so it was easy to find.

"I once read this and changed my way of viewing things (I used to be a "nice guy" that raged because apparently girls kept choosing the a-holes): Girls don't wan't "nice guys", they want "good men.' In other words, they want a person whose real virtues makes the people around them better, not those who try to pretend to be everything they mistakenly think women want in hopes to attract them."

#9t: Game Boy Pocket Clear



-This right here is the very first portable system I ever owned. Naturally, I'm a little biased about it - but I truly do feel that, all nostalgia aside, it's a fantastic edition of the system. Unlike that weird (and sort of tacky) clear purple GBC, this is actually straight-up clear; and the result is one of Nintendo's most bizarre, creative and downright clever designs.

But if you felt that the Ice Blue Game Boy Pocket was better... well, that's understandable!

#9t: Char Custom GameCube


-Honestly, I have no idea what a "Char Custom" is, or what the symbols on the system mean. But I do know that this is definitely one of the most distinctive and appealing GameCube models out there. That's a really cool shade of red: it's perhaps the only GameCube that could actually be considered "classy"!

It even has a matching controller, and appears to have a matching Game Boy Player too. Very cool stuff.

#10: Halo 3 Xbox 360



-Ah, 2007: the year of threequels, Simpsons, and Game Fuel. Halo 3 probably had the biggest ad campaign any game's ever received, aside from perhaps Angry Birds; and needless to say, that meant that there was a special Halo 3 Xbox 360 console. There was a Halo Xbox too, but I decided to include this one on the list instead, because it's easily superior.

I mean, just look at that thing! Even if you don't care much for Halo, there's no denying that this is a great design. It's also proof that orange + game systems = success.

#11: Spice Game Boy Advance


-We may have gotten the Spice GameCube controller, but unfortunately, Nintendo of Japan kept the rest of the Spice hardware to itself. Which is a shame, too, because this Spice GBA kicks some serious ass. Amazingly, as good as it is, it's not even the best GBA color; I swear, that system had the greatest special-edition colors ever.

Also, since people like to call the original GBA the "Taco GBA," does that make this a Doritos Locos Taco GBA? >_>

#12: Surf Blue Game Boy Advance SP



-In the vein of that Neo Geo I posted earlier, here's another portable that lets you bring the ocean with you... on the go! Surf Blue is just an awesome name for a color, and this particular shade of blue really pops. I really dig the Graphite one too, but for my money, this is the best SP on the market; and it's a lot better than the Cobalt Blue that the SP launched with.

#13: FIRE N64



-I really feel like orange consoles should be more common, because they're almost always striking. The "Fire" N64, despite having a somewhat misleading name, is a great example: if you went over to a friend's house and saw this, it'd definitely grab your attention. And not for the wrong reasons either, like the Pikachu N64!

(I kid, I kid. The Pika one isn't THAT bad.)

I had the regular N64, myself. It was a good design, but the special editions were some of the best ever.

-I don't think much of the Neo Geo Pocket Color, but there's no denying that there were some awesome colors of it. The other one on this list won't be popping for a while still... but for now, here's the bizarre-yet-brilliant Ocean Blue one. Hang ten, dude!

#15: Graphite Game Boy Advance SP

-Shortly after the Nintendo DS launched, NoA made the baffling decision to make new GBA SPs that had brighter screens and better refresh rates. I have no idea why they did that, but I'm glad they did, because this Graphite one is kickass. I think my Cobalt SP is about to kick the bucket, so I might replace it with one of these soon.

#16: Xbox



-The Xbox really stood out design-wise, next to the bland PS2 and not-so-pimp-purple GameCube. As far as I know, only a special Halo edition followed; but as with the Wii, the original Xbox just nailed it, so there wasn't any need for much variation. Eleven years later, it still looks awesome.

#17: Ice Blue Game Boy Pocket



-My God, even the f***ing box is epic! The Game Boy Pocket had a damn good lineup of colors, and almost every single one could be considered for a list like this. I'd have to say this is my second-favorite of the bunch, though: it's a shame that it was exclusive to Target, as it's quite rare nowadays.

#18: Wii



-This is one of two standard colors that'll be making the list. Nintendo may have only released a few different colors for the Wii, but I don't really mind: they hit the nail on the head the first time. Considering it came out in '06, the design was honestly pretty ahead of its time.

-Anyone remember how crazy the advertising blitz was for The Simpsons Movie? Good times. I still wish I had gone to one of those Kwik-E-Mart 7-Elevens. Anyway, I believe this was a contest prize, but I'm not sure; but regardless, I do know that it's been known to go for a decent chunk of change.

Famicom Game Boy Micro


-This thing actually does look pretty awesome, but the main reason I like it is because of NoA's baffling decision to release it stateside. They released a special edition of a niche system... based on a Japanese system controller... in America. It's kind of hard to believe that actually happened, in retrospect.

Alright, so we can all agree that those 3DS XL colors are weak, right? They just... man, they look so flat. The system deserves better.

To wash that bad taste out of y'all's mouths, though, I've decided to count down the 20 best system colors! I'm including everything: standard colors, special editions, region exclusives, and even contest prizes. In some cases, I'm looking pretty far into the past - so prepare to see some really weird, obscure stuff.

Smooth, rounded corners are needed. The 3DS is not a comfortable system to hold for an extended period of time. Shame about the colours, though. I don't know why Nintendo like their two-toned systems. Just give us a white model and some primary colours and call it a day.

Really! I actually think the 3DS is one of the most comfortable portables Nintendo's released. I do agree, though, that the lack of a white model is bizarre. I don't know why NoA is against white-colored portables all of a sudden; we didn't get the white 3DS or DSi XL, either.

I really liked the DSi XL, but the 3DS one has a strangely off-putting design to me. It seems too... streamlined, y'know? The hardware colors are flat and seem to lack depth, and the corners seem way too rounded and smoothed out. Whereas, to me, the original 3DS looks really stylish.

But I'm also the kind of guy who won't upgrade until... like, three or four revisions later, if at all. I still swear to this day that the DS Grande is better than the DS Lite.
