Hello! With the 3DS out, the DS is on its last legs. It's time that we determine the best game on the platform.
Rules:
* You can nominate 10 DS games on your first day (ends 12am EST) * You can nominate 5 DS games on each subsequent day * A game is eligible for the contest when it has 5 nominations. More nominations means a higher seed. * The goal is a 64 game bracket; given the DS's depth I don't think this will be an issue * Anything is allowed - ports/remakes/collections/whatever. I expect voters will take the game's merits into consideration and not claim Chrono Trigger DS or Super Mario 64 DS to be the best game ever, but if they want to, that's cool too. * I am open to suggestions on format if people have them.
1. Chrono Trigger 2. Link to the Past 3. Mario 3 4. Pokemon RBY 5. Super Mario 64 6. Mario World 7. Ocarina of Time 7. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Trials & Tribulations (8-0) W, 35-20 vs. Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald 8. Resident Evil 4 9. MGS3 10. Super Smash Bros. Melee (6-2) W, 32-25 vs. #2 Super Mario 64 11. Paper Mario (8-0) W, 23-17 vs. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas 12. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (6-2) W, 33-20 vs. Pokemon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum 13. DS has depth, man. I think the one weak point of the system is that it lacks AAA games. outside of maybe PW, there isn't a top-tier game, at least from my perspective. there's no genre-defining action game, no truly great RPG that's not a port, and not really any influential games.
I wish I found some appeal in Journey. I think it has some great ideas -- super simplicity, embracing the traversal aspect of games, quiet and peaceful co-op, taking in scenery. this is a game that relies very heavily on its one appeal and Journey doesn't seem very fun to just wander. I'd like to try it out just to make sure I'm not missing something.
that said, LTM's argument here is absolute garbage.
the thing with Xenoblade is that its appeal isn't really apparent in videos. it's one of those things where you touch it and want to just explore everything. the music kicks in and the expansive environments capture you. it just feels good in a way that most modern RPGs don't these days.
I was playing on 360 controller today. it's just too much of a bother to set it up for a quick 10 minute gaming session. I was mostly just title grabbing anyway and that doesn't take much skill.
I haven't even bothered to look at it. it never really appealed to me but if it comes out here (still not a guarantee) then I'll play it. it looks a bit more interactive than recent FF games anyway.
I'm okay with 13, but the video just seemed like more of the same. FF13's thing was all style and no substance, and that video seems to be just taking the original formula and pushing it to 11 instead of actually mixing things up and trying something new.

okay, quest 13 down (more like 18 but whatever). #1 on a couple of the stages. I'm currently two seconds ahead of #2 on quest 11. that'll last about 3 hours.
too bad I won't be able to play again until Sunday at the earliest, argh
I played a 3ds today for the first time. first impression on approximately 75 seconds of gameplay: wow, the slide pad is really awful. I bet you get used to it but for someone who's used to just tilting the analog stick lightly, it was pretty jarring. 3d is pretty much as expected.

that's kinda interesting.
I always thought it was weird that MGS3 was getting rated so far ahead of RE4. those two games seem equal to me. it's probably just one point on everyone's ballot but when Mario 3/World are between them it looks wrong.
it's weird. I don't really consider myself a big DQ fan but this is probably my 13th DQ game or so. 1-9, DQM1-4 (with 5 on the way), Rocket Slime. 5 of those games probably crack my top 100, too.
started playing dq6. I'm enjoying this more than I thought I would.
- game starts out surprisingly story-heavy - it's kinda weird with no real party members. there's this assumed character that you take on that's not really communicated to you very well. - light/dark world zone - I hate how you can't use the touch screen to advance text. I do that in most of my DS RPGs. - battles are so very fast compared to the slogfests that are dq8 and dq9. none of this wasted time with animations.
I'm looking for a good handheld one actually! I want to play a DQ game, kinda, but it's 8 I want to play and screw sitting in front of a tv for 60 hours. maybe I'll try DQ5 again after I finish up AAI.
