101 Dalmatians
Doc's Ranking 33/51 Karo's Ranking 33/49 Disney downsized its animation department right before 101 Dalmatians, and the movie pays a terrible price as the result. More poorly drawn 'Sleeping Beauty' style cutouts, I'm afraid. Only this time without any pretty backgrounds. 101 Dalmatians is a movie very dependent on its villain (and a very good one, too). Cruella has to bear a lot of the load thanks to poor development of the characters on the good guys side, but thankfully, he simple fact of wanting to see this vile woman get what is coming to her is more then enough to make a good story. A decent movie, but not going any higher then this. Best Character: Cruella De Vil She's one of Disney's most evil and memorable villains, and thankfully she wasn't changed much from the way she was in the book. Worst Character: Anita Radcliffe Anita's role in this movie is the same as 99% of female Disney characters from the classic era - stand around all pretty and proper, and have no personality. -- SuperNiceDog is about 20% cooler then the other gurus. |

This is seriously the first time I heard someone call Disney's Robin Hood 'depressing'. It's in the running for being one of the most light-hearted and funny movies in the whole canon.
Robin Hood Doc's Ranking: 34/51 Karo's Ranking 12/49 A unbelievably underrated classic, this film has a simple charm similar to Winnie the Pooh and Sword in the Stone, yet for some reason is always hated on by critics. Contrary to popular belief, Robin Hood does not have bad animation. Though they may have taken some money saving 'cut and paste' shortcuts, it is not truly bad in the way Emperor's New Groove and Home on the Range are. The character design and dialog are top notch (my favorite quote is Friar Tuck exclaiming 'praise the lord and pass the tax rebates!' as Robin Hood and co. raid the royal treasury), though I would have preferred them not to make Little John yet another Baloo clone. It is also quite refreshing to have a Disney hero who's a little bit in the moral gray area, rather then being some goody-goody boy scout. One thing that is never mentioned is whether Prince John is Maid Marian's father or uncle, as because it is clearly stated that she is the niece of John's brother King Richard, he has to be one or the other (clearly some inter-species relationships going on in the royal family, yesirree). Robin Hood is without a doubt one of the best 'funny movies' Disney has ever done, and is a must see for anyone who likes Disney's comedic fare. Best Character: Prince John One of the best Disney villains ever created, 'PJ's' antics are absolutely delightful and steal every scene he is in. His interactions with Sir Hiss provide much of the comedy in the movie. On another note, one thing you may have never noticed is that Prince John is given the appearance of a female lion. Yet another Disney character with gender identity issues. Worst Character: Alan-a-Dale He does nothing of real significance in the movie besides sing the opening song and provide occasional narration. I get the feeling that they were just trying to cram him into the story because he is such a well known member of Robin Hood's merry men. -- SuperNiceDog is about 20% cooler then the other gurus. |
