On Tuesday, Democrats won a majority of seats contested on election night and saw lower turnout for Donald Trump statewide. The Florida Democratic Party was proud to directly support seven candidates through our Take Back Local efforts four of those seven candidates won their elections in competitive local races.

Last nights municipal election wins are another huge step in our plan to take back Florida, said FDP Chair Nikki Fried. Without a presidential primary, we won 60% of contested local elections and saw lower turnout for Donald Trump than in 2020 showing promising trends for the general elections in November.

FDP volunteers knocked on thousands of doors and spoke to tens of thousands of voters ahead of the March elections, and that hard work paid off we flipped and defended many more seats across Florida. With the results from last night and the trends that weve been seeing since 2022, were confident that Florida is in play.

I want to specifically congratulate Andy Thomson, Yvette Drucker, George Oliver III, and Maria Rodriguez for their hard-fought victories I look forward to supporting their efforts to lead in their communities. Last night proved that Democrats are building the grassroots infrastructure we need to organize year-round, and we plan to take every opportunity to show Florida the difference between failed Republican policies and a fresh, Democratic vision.

Yes, it's a big problem and always has been. It's even worse in Spain and Eastern Europe.

The racism used to be shameless and open in the 70s and 80s (throwing bananas at black players, etc.). Now it takes the form of disgusting social media abuse whenever a black player is perceived as making a mistake (like missing a penalty).

There are quite severe punishments for anyone who is caught doing this, including prison and lifetime stadium bans, but there are a lot of stupid racist scum in the UK, unfortunately.

So, if the people around you at work, home, or in the streets seem a little more tense and maybe you're that person you can thank Paxton for that, at least in part.

But one thing the whole debacle has provided a reminder of is just how horny the Lone Star State is. The amount of search traffic related to these sites going incognito and for virtual private network (VPN) services to circumvent the bans has been awe inspiring.

Looking at Google's search traffic after Pornhub's block went into effect provided a chuckle when the notoriously religious and conservative East Texas ranked top in Texas for searches of "how to access Pornhub."

But the topic deserves a deeper dive, so let's look at what parts of Texas are hardest hit by the bans. And to clear the air, there's no judgement here on these searches from my fellow Texans, just some context of how our state has reacted to the enforcement of a law passed by the conservative majority in the state capitol.

For these thirsty search terms, we'll look at Thursday, March 14, through Friday, March 22. That's the time frame from when Pornhub's ban went into effect through the time this story was written. Google's data may get updates over time.

One of the top searches for that time period up 3,500% was "how to watch porn in Texas?" Lubbock scored highest and the East Texas region of Tyler-Longview and Lufkin Nacogdoches searched for the term second most. Corpus Christ came third, followed by the region encompassing Waco, Temple, and Bryan at No. 4. The top five was rounded out by Austin and San Antonio finished No. 7.

The top search term for VPNs in Texas was "free VPN." The search traffic for this is a close race near the top, but Austin ranked No. 1, followed by Waco, Temple, and Bryan at No. 2; Lubbock at No. 3; DFW at No. 4; and Wichita Falls and Lawton, Oklahoma, at No. 5. San Antonio fell to No. 8 for this search.

Another popular search term is "Pornhub alternatives." Abilene and Sweetwater make an appearance as the area searching the most for this, by a healthy margin. Austin landed spot No. 2; Corpus Christi was No. 3; Amarillo was No. 4; and the East Texas region appears again at No. 5. San Antonio followed closely at No. 6.

Other "breakout" search terms, which means they were up 5,000% or more, include: How to access Pornhub in Texas; VPN; Pornhub VPN; Pornhub access; porn websites; and top porn sites. The list goes on and on with untold numbers of Texans scrambling to find ways to stimulate their visual cortex before they stimulate other things.

The law causing all this was passed by Texas' conservative House, Senate, and Republican Gov. Greg Abbott and requires sites serving pornography to verify the age of visitors before letting them access the content.

WASHINGTON (AP) The Senate passed a $1.2 trillion package of spending bills in the early morning hours Saturday, a long overdue action nearly six months into the budget year that will push any threats of a government shutdown to the fall. The bill now goes to President Joe Biden to be signed into law.

The vote was 74-24. It came after funding had expired for the agencies at midnight, but the White House sent out a notice shortly after the deadline announcing the Office of Management and Budget had ceased shutdown preparations because there was a high degree of confidence that Congress would pass the legislation and the president would sign it on Saturday.

Because obligations of federal funds are incurred and tracked on a daily basis, agencies will not shut down and may continue their normal operations, the White House statement said.

Scientists say they have successfully eliminated HIV from infected cells, using Nobel Prize-winning Crispr gene-editing technology.

Working like scissors, but at the molecular level, it cuts DNA so "bad" bits can be removed or inactivated.

The hope is to ultimately be able to rid the body entirely of the virus, although much more work is needed to check it would be safe and effective.

Existing HIV medicines can stop the virus but not eliminate it.

The University of Amsterdam team, presenting a synopsis, or abstract, of their early findings at a medical conference this week, stress their work remains merely "proof of concept" and will not become a cure for HIV any time soon.

And Dr James Dixon, stem-cell and gene-therapy technologies associate professor at the University of Nottingham, agrees, saying the full findings still require scrutiny.

"Much more work will be needed to demonstrate results in these cell assays can happen in an entire body for a future therapy," he said.

"There will be much more development needed before this could have impact on those with HIV."

Other scientists are also trying to use Crispr against HIV.

And Excision BioTherapeutics says after 48 weeks, three volunteers with HIV have no serious side effects.

But Dr Jonathan Stoye, a virus expert at the Francis Crick Institute, in London, said removing HIV from all the cells that might harbour it in the body was "extremely challenging".

"Off-target effects of the treatment, with possible long-term side effects, remain a concern," he said.

"It therefore seems likely that many years will elapse before any such Crispr-based therapy becomes routine - even assuming that it can be shown to be effective."

HIV infects and attacks immune-system cells, using their own machinery to make copies of itself.

Even with effective treatment, some go into a resting, or latent, state - so they still contain the DNA, or genetic material, of HIV, even if not actively producing new virus.

Most people with HIV need life-long antiretroviral therapy. If they stop taking these drugs, the dormant virus can reawaken and cause problems again.

A rare few have been apparently "cured", after aggressive cancer therapy wiped out some of their infected cells, but this would never be recommended purely to treat HIV.

A pro-Trump lawyer who tried to overturn the 2020 election was arrested Monday after a court hearing about her recent leak of internal emails belonging to Dominion Voting Systems.

There was an existing arrest warrant for the attorney, Stefanie Lambert, stemming from her failure to appear at recent court hearings in her separate criminal case in Michigan, where she was charged with conspiring to seize voting machines after the 2020 election.

Lambert and a cadre of election deniers have disrupted one of Dominions many ongoing defamation lawsuits by publicly leaking thousands of the companys internal emails in recent days, using the disclosures to resurrect false claims about voter fraud.

The controversy erupted when Lambert provided the confidential Dominion documents to Barry County Sheriff Dar Leaf, who has embraced conspiracy theories about the 2020 election and has used his office to hunt for supposed voter fraud against Donald Trump. In the last 24 hours, Leaf has posted more than 2,000 internal Dominion documents on his social media account.

Lambert had access to the Dominion files because she represents former Overstock CEO Patrick Byrne, who is being sued for defamation by the voting company over his 2020 election lies. As part of the case, they have access to discovery from Dominion, whose lawyers said they have already turned over more than a million documents.

Lambert attended a hearing Monday in Byrnes defamation case in Washington, DC, but was never seen leaving the courtroom, and questions swirled among the other attorneys about whether she had been taken into custody.

The judge told Lambert to stay behind as the hearing wrapped up. The other attorneys left the courtroom, and two federal marshals then went inside and locked the doors. Lambert was never seen exiting the courtroom. The marshals declined to say whether they arrested her, and she didnt answer messages seeking comment after the hearing.

The US Marshals Service confirmed in a statement late Monday that Lambert was arrested.

Jeff Bezos' ex-wife, MacKenzie Scott, landed in Elon Musk's crosshairs this month for her philanthropic gift-giving.

But that hasn't stopped her from pouring her wealth into charity work. On Tuesday, Scott announced that she would be donating $640 million to 361 organizations.

The award is more than double the $250 million she had initially pledged to give away last year.

Lever for Change, the organization that assisted Scott with her philanthropic gifts, says 279 nonprofits are receiving $2 million each, while the remaining 82 organizations are getting $1 million each.

Lever for Change said that the open call for applications "initially planned for 250 awards of $1 million each" but that "in light of the incredible work of these organizations, as judged by their peers and external panelists, the donor team decided to expand the awardee pool and the award amount."

Scott's hefty donation has come weeks after Musk slammed her charity work.

"'Super rich ex-wives who hate their former spouse' should filed be listed among 'Reasons that Western Civilization died,'" Musk said in a now-deleted X post on March 6.

Musk didn't elaborate on why he'd singled out Scott, but he's been a harsh critic of efforts to promote corporate diversity, equity, and inclusion.

"DEI is just another word for racism. Shame on anyone who uses it," Musk said in an X post in January.

That wasn't the first time Musk ripped Scott for donating billions to charity. Back in May 2022, Musk claimed that his companies were being sidelined by the Democratic Party because Scott had donated to "PACs posing as charities."

"It's safe to say that MacKenzie [ahem] Scott is not exactly a big fan of her ex-husband. Unfortunately, a lot of others are getting caught in the crossfire," Musk said in an X post in May 2022.

Scott, for her part, appears to have issued no public reactions to Musk's comments about how she handles her money.

Scott said in a post on her website, Yield Giving, that the nonprofits were selected "from a pool of over 6,000 applicants." The 361 organizations, she wrote, were "elevated by peer organizations and a round-2 evaluation panel" and "are vital agents of change."

Scott's donations this year also include support for women's health and minority groups. She's donating to the ACLU of Alabama, the Center for Empowering Refugees and Immigrants, and the Institute of Women & Ethnic Studies, to name a few.

"This open call award helps us take our fight for justice and equity to the next level, continuing our work to dismantle the legal, structural, and cultural barriers that contribute to gender inequity," Megan Peterson, the executive director for the nonprofit advocacy group Gender Justice, said of Scott's donation. Peterson's organization is set to receive $2 million from Scott.

And unlike most philanthropists, who tie specific reporting requirements to their funding, Scott stands out with her no-strings-attached approach toward her donations.

In 2022, Scott said in a blog post on Medium that she'd donated nearly $2 billion to "343 organizations supporting the voices and opportunities of people from underserved communities."

Scott's donations in 2022 included $275 million to Planned Parenthood and $15 million to the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service.

Musk and representatives for Scott at Lever for Change didn't respond to requests for comment from Business Insider sent outside regular business hours.

NEW YORK (AP) Five states will hold presidential primaries on Tuesday as President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump continue to lock up support around the country after becoming their parties presumptive nominees.

Trump is expected to easily win GOP primaries in Arizona, Florida, Illinois, Kansas and Ohio. Biden is expected to do the same in all those states except Florida, where Democrats canceled their primary and opted to award all 224 of their delegates to Biden. Thats not an unusual move for a party with an incumbent in the White House seeking reelection.

Other races outside of the presidency could provide insight into the national political mood. Ohios Republican Senate primary pits Trump-backed businessman Bernie Moreno against two challengers, Ohio Secretary of State Frank Frank LaRose and Matt Dolan, whose family owns the Cleveland Guardians baseball team.

Chicago voters will decide whether to assess a one-time real estate tax to pay for new homeless services. And voters in California will move toward deciding a replacement for former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who resigned his seat after being pushed out of Republican leadership.

Trump and Biden have for weeks been focused on the general election, aiming their campaigns lately on states that could be competitive in November rather than merely those holding primaries.

Trump on Saturday rallied in Ohio, which has for several years been reliably Republican. But there are signs the state could be competitive again in 2024. Last year, Ohio voted overwhelmingly to protect abortion rights in its constitution and voted to legalize marijuana.

Biden, meanwhile, is set to visit Nevada and Arizona on Tuesday.

Both men are running on their records in office and casting the other as a threat to America. Trump, 77, has portrayed 81-year-old Biden as mentally unfit.
