A strong 7.0 magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of northern California, according to the US Geological Survey.

A tsunami warning was initially issued along the coasts of both northern California and southern Oregon - an area that includes about 4.7 million people - but has since been rescinded.

The earthquake's epicentre hit closest to the town of Ferndale, California, a small city in Humboldt County about 260 miles (418km) north of San Francisco.

The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office of Emergency Services said they had not immediately received any reports indicating widespread damage.

Typically, after an earthquake first responders in the area will survey buildings and roads to look for any damage and examine structural integrity.

While the earthquake does not seem to have caused huge destruction, one resident of Ferndale who spoke to the BBC in the minutes following the quake said the inside of the building she was in "looks like a bomb has gone off in every room".

Olivia Cobian, the innkeeper at the Gingerbread Mansion Inn in Ferndale, said the inside of the inn now "looks like a warzone".

"We have huge cast iron fireplaces that have been lifted up and moved over, everything's fallen over, broken".

More than 10,000 people have been without power in Humboldt County since the earthquake struck, according to poweroutage.us.

Multiple aftershocks have also been reported since the initial earthquake, which struck around 10:44 local time (18:44 GMT).

Some areas, including the city of Berkeley in northern California, issued an evacuation order due to the threat of a possible tsunami.

"EVACUATE NOW," an X post from the city warned. "People in the Tsunami Zone are in IMMEDIATE DANGER and MUST EVACUATE NOW. Stay east of 7th St. This is a lawful order to leave now."

Kayla Aihara was staying at a hotel in Half Moon Bay, California and got the back-to-back alerts about the earthquake and potential tsunami.

Before the tsunami warning was cancelled, workers at the hotel had told her to vacate a gym and go to higher ground out of fear of the tsunami's impacts.

Some vacated outside and she said multiple people crowded near the shoreline of the Pacific Coast hotel, watching the waves and waiting to see any hints of a tsunami.

California Governor Gavin Newsom was briefed on the earthquakes and was meeting with state emergency officials to help coordinate the response.

The US West Coast is the confluence of a number of the Earth's tectonic plates, and tremors are not uncommon. But a strong 7 magnitude quake isn't typically seen in the region. Experts say there are between 10 and 15 earthquakes of this magnitude that hit globally each year.

The area has been struck by a number of major earthquakes, including a 1994 quake that hit Northridge, in the Los Angeles area, killing dozens of people and injuring thousands more, as it wrought billions of dollars of damage to homes and infrastructure.

SEOUL, South Korea South Koreas National Assembly voted Wednesday to demand President Yoon Suk Yeol lift his decree imposing emergency martial law only hours earlier.

The drama threatened a major political crisis in South Korea, where the U.S. maintains 28,500 troops, at a period of rising tension with Communist North Korea.

All 190 assembly members present early Wednesday morning voted to demand Yoon end martial law, according to Yonhap News. The assembly consists of 300 members.

Yoon in a televised speech declared martial law Tuesday evening to eradicate pro-North Korean forces and protect free constitutional order.

He said he would eliminate anti-state forces and normalize the country as soon as possible, through martial law.

The South Korean military said martial law will remain in force until Yoon himself lifts it, according to local media outlet YTN.

U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Philip Goldberg posted on social platform X at 2:24 a.m. that the U.S. Embassy and Department of State are closely tracking President Yoons recent declaration of martial law. The situation is fluid.

About 300 South Korean police had gathered outside the presidential compound around 1 a.m. carrying riot shields, but no protesters had gathered. At the National Assembly building, about 150 demonstrators, some carrying signs, had gathered outside the gates, facing a line of police officers.

Thankfully, the lawmakers stopped this, said Jeong Seung Hyun, an Ansan city council member and member of the opposition Democratic Party, at the gates.

Jeong said he drove from Ansan, parked on the traffic-choked streets and walked a half mile to the gate.

Park Sung-soo, an office worker from Anyang city said hed been outside the assembly about three hours. He drove to Seoul after hearing the news of Yoons martial law decree, ditched his car and walked to the gates. He carried a sign: Impeachment is peace.

The only resolution to this crisis, he said, is to impeach Yoon.

Yoon in his speech referenced the National Assemblys impeachment efforts against members of his administration, calling it an unprecedented situation since the founding of our country.

South Koreas Democratic Party, which holds the majority in the National Assembly, threatened to file motions to impeach state prosecutors last week in relation to their handling of a stock manipulation case against South Korean first lady Kim Keon Hee.

The declaration of emergency martial law will cause some inconvenience to the good people who believed in and followed the values of the constitution of [South Korea], but we will focus on minimizing these inconveniences, Yoon said.

The leader of Yoons own conservative party, Han Dong-hoon, called the decision wrong and vowed to stop it with the people, The Associated Press reported.

Opposition leader Lee Jae-myung, who narrowly lost to Yoon in the 2022 presidential election, called Yoons announcement illegal and unconstitutional, according to the AP.

South Koreas Constitution allows its president to impose martial law during war time, armed conflict or national emergency.

The president is required to notify the National Assembly immediately following the declaration, the constitution states. If the majority of lawmakers vote to lift the declaration, the president shall comply with the request.

Two types of martial law exist in South Korea: security martial law and emergency martial law, according to the constitution. Under emergency martial law, the president may prohibit political demonstrations and curtail freedom of the press for the government to continue functioning.

Security martial law is declared during war time or a national emergency to maintain peace and order.

Yoons decision marks the first time in 44 years a South Korean president has declared martial law. Former President Park Chung-hee declared martial law on May 17, 1980, a decree unilaterally extended by South Korean Gen. Chun Doo-Hwan, who deployed troops to suppress pro-democracy protesters, many of them on college campuses.

So it seems like the mistake here was not having the forces in place to prevent the members of parliament from getting into the building before declaring martial law. Had they not been able to get in and vote could the president have been able to pretty much do what he wanted?
