The Los Angeles Lakers are targeting UConn men's basketball coach Dan Hurley as the franchise's next coach and are preparing a massive, long-term contract offer to bring the back-to-back NCAA national champion to the NBA, sources told ESPN.

The Lakers have had preliminary contact with Hurley and the sides are planning to escalate discussions in the coming days, sources told ESPN. Hurley has been at the forefront of the Lakers' search from the beginning of the process, even while the organization has done its due diligence interviewing several other candidates, sources said.

Lakers vice president of basketball operations and general manager Rob Pelinka and governor Jeanie Buss are eager to formally discuss with Hurley their vision of marrying his dominant program -- built upon his tactical acumen and his elite player development -- with the storied Lakers brand, sources said.

Hurley, 51, has often described his ambition to one day coach in the NBA and has expressed to the Lakers a desire to explore the full picture of a partnership with one of basketball's winningest franchises, sources said.

Hurley told UConn players at practice Thursday that the Lakers had contacted him and that he was listening to what they had to say, sources said.

The pursuit of Hurley comes on the 20th anniversary of the Lakers trying to hire then-Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski to a record-breaking contract in 2004. Krzyzewski elected to remain with the Blue Devils, but the climate has dramatically changed in college athletics. The demands of NIL fundraising for non-power-football schools such as UConn are an especially relentless grind -- and are expected to become even more difficult.

Part of the allure of Hurley traces back to the changing landscape of NBA roster building under the collective bargaining agreement. Because of the roster-building limitations of the new second apron, the ability of big-market teams to construct contending rosters by trading multiple draft picks and young players for a third star player has largely been eliminated. Beyond the 17th pick in this month's draft, the Lakers have a young core of Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura and Max Christie that management believes can still show even greater improvement under Hurley's coaching, sources said.

After historically dominant back-to-back national title seasons, Hurley has emerged as the most coveted coach in the sport -- and the possibility of him leaving UConn and the Big East Conference for the Lakers has massive implications for college basketball and for the NBA. Hurley has constructed a juggernaut that has lapped the sport -- culminating with the NCAA's first repeat champion in 17 years and a tournament performance that produced the biggest point differential in tournament history: 140 points.

The possibility of UConn winning a third straight title looms with the return of a preseason top-five team, but the Huskies did lose two lottery picks (center Donovan Clingan and guard Stephon Castle) and a first-team All-America point guard (Tristen Newton) to the NBA draft.

The Lakers dismissed coach Darvin Ham after a first-round exit in the Western Conference playoffs. Ham was 94-70 in two seasons -- including a trip to the Western Conference finals in 2023.

Hurley is 141-58 (.709) in six seasons as the UConn coach, and he holds an NCAA tournament record of 12 consecutive double-digit victories. A son of Naismith Hall of Fame coach Bob Hurley Sr. -- for whom Hurley played for at famed St. Anthony High School of Jersey City, New Jersey -- Dan Hurley spent nine years as a high school coach at St. Benedict's Prep before rapidly rebuilding college programs at Wagner and Rhode Island. His older brother, Bobby, is the head coach at Arizona State.

A social media influencer finds himself in legal hot water for a viral video involving fireworks launched at a luxury sportscar from a helicopter.

Alex Choi, a Studio City man who boasts 1.2 million Instagram followers, is accused by federal officials of taking a Lamborghini to the federal land portion of El Mirage Dry Lakebed in San Bernardino County, where his associates shot fireworks out of a nearby helicopter at the speeding sportscar, as reported by Seamus Hughes Court Watch.

While Choi has removed the full video, clips can still be found online.

The U.S. Department of Justice said Choiwhose birth name is Suk Min Choiwas arrested Wednesday and was scheduled to appear in federal court Thursday afternoon.

According to the DOJ complaint, Choi directed a YouTube video in which two women in a helicopter flying near the ground and without filming permits repeatedly shot fireworks at a Lamborghini sportscar.

The video titled Destroying a Lamborghini with Fireworks was shot in June 2023 and posted on July 4, 2023.

Choi, 24, is charged with causing the placement of an explosive or incendiary device on an aircraft. The charge is a misdemeanor unless its determined to have occurred willfully and without regard for the safety of human life, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

He faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison.

Choi did not immediately return KTLAs request for comment.

In addition, the pilots licenses were suspended, according to Court Watch.

The Angry Birds Movie 3 will be directed by John Rice (Angry Birds, Beavis and Butt-Head Do The Universe). The screenplay will be written by Thurop Van Orman (Angry Birds 2, Adventure Time, Flapjack), who will also executive produce alongside Toru Nakahara (Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic Prime, Golden Axe). A Yorkshire craft brewery has recalled a beer inspired by the late entertainer Bruce Forsyth out of fear the cans could explode.

Brew York has advised that anyone with the Juice Forsyth IPA in their house should open it while its submerged in water and while wearing hand and eye protection if possible.

The recall, issued by the Food Standards Agency (FSA), applies to 440ml products with the best before date July 23 2024 and is specific to items sold in England.

Unfortunate wording on the can describes the 5.0% ABV drink as a pineapple, mango and passion fruit tropical explosion.

The notice distributed on the FSA website said there have been reports of cans pouring with excessive carbonation, bulging and even bursting in some circumstances.

Customers can contact the York-based brewer once the beer has been disposed, to get a coupon for use on its website as well as a little extra on us as an apology.

The page for Juice Forsyth on Brew Yorks online shop pays tribute to the much-loved Strictly Come Dancing presenter, who died in 2017.

It says: Good game, good game! Do you wanna go higher?

Monolith Productions--the studio working on a currently unnamed Wonder Woman game--may be struggling with the project, according to Kinda Funny Gamescast host Greg Miller, who recently claimed the game's development is "troubled."

"In the past year--'cause Ill leave it ambiguous--I have talked to an insider, who was like, 'This games troubled,'" Miller said during a podcast episode focused on predictions for Summer Game Fest. "Thats it, thats all Ill say. So I dont hold out hope that its in a place to show something [at Summer Game Fest]."

Just days after the podcast, Monolith has announced it's hiring. Specifically, the studio is looking for someone to fill the role of lead gameplay engineer--a fact that could lend credence to Miller's claims. The role of lead gameplay engineer requires quite a bit of experience, and saddles whoever takes the position with a large amount of responsibility as far as the game's development goes. That Monolith (which has been developing the Wonder Woman Game since at least 2021, if not earlier) is looking to fill such a pivotal role this late in the game could simply suggest its previous occupant got a higher-paying job offer at another studio, or simply felt ill-equipped for the role and left of their own volition. But it could also be a reflection of how well the game's development is (or isn't) coming along.

Monolith's Wonder Woman game was first unveiled at The Game Awards in 2021. Although fans of the iconic heroine were hoping to catch another glimpse of her during 2023's award ceremony, no information was revealed. In fact, the only other update we have on the state of the Wonder Woman game is Monolith's confirmation that it will not be a live-service title--a rumor that started last year due to a different Monolith job posting. As such, any unverifiable information on the state of the game ought to be taken with a grain of salt.
