True. They've only really brought back the overt "Nintendo ___" branding for the Switch, presumably because:

In fact, I've had moment of confusion several times where someone has referenced their "Switch" and I'm not sure what they mean because it holds more than one context.

Though I think I remember them usually saying "Nintendo 3DS system" when talking about it in Directs, so maybe I'm just blanking on old trends.

There's literally zero reason for them to call it the Switch 64, but there's honestly a part of me that would love to see them go that route just for the sheer inanity of it.

Aside from competition, "Nintendo" stopped being a part of the console's colloquial names after the N64. Officially, certainly, it was the "Nintendo Gamecube," "Nintendo Wii," etc., but "Nintendo" was a pretty important part of "Super Nintendo" and "Nintendo 64" in a way that hasn't really been applicable since the N64 phased out.

Price gouging is largely a consequence of insurance companies negotiating prices down when they actually pay, thanks to the buying power they have. Because insurance companies won't be paying the full sticker price, the sticker price has to be jacked up so the hospitals can still make ends meet when the bill is partially paid. That, in turn, makes things less affordable for uninsured people, giving them more motivation to seek out insurance and benefiting insurance companies even more.

Take insurance companies and questions of maintaining a business relationship with them out of the equation, and you've got a recipe for much more reasonable costs. You've also got a recipe for fiscally conservative politicians to push for cost-saving measures within a universal system, rather than pushing against the system altogether (though most of those politicians have enough investments in the health industry that there's no small amount of conflict of interest there).

Because they liked DMC5 and aren't invested enough in the storyline of the series to want to give up the chance to have more of that gameplay for the sake of respecting the story's natural endpoint. There's also the option to just start a new storyline, in which case it might not be numbered as a direct sequel. Either way, the point is that people want to play more games like the good game they liked.

Lobbying from the insurance and pharmaceutical industries, a belief that such a plan would result in tax hikes (never mind that *all* Americans currently pay more per capita for health care than any other country, so even if everyone's proportional contribution remained the same a universal or single-payer system could save everyone money by just copying how literally anyone else's health care system is structured), and ideological opposition to "handouts" (usually fanned by lobbyists and others with a vested interest in maximizing the profits of the health insurance industry). A sizable amount of money goes into convincing Americans that universal health care would be bad for them, mostly coming from people who make more money without universal health care.

This. The only way in which it's worse is that there are fewer opportunities for particularly wealthy people to jump the queue and get better treatment, but that's not an issue for the vast majority of people (as much as privatized care is sold to the masses by appealing to the fantasy that someday they might be able to attain such a position themselves) and those opportunities would still exist, so there's little reason to care about it. Universal care yields better health outcomes, provides care at a lower overall cost, and results in fewer people trapped in debt.

Every game has mods now and if it depends on mods to be good, it isn't

Eh, that's debatable. If a game is only good with mods, then the studio shouldn't get any credit for making the game good (and Bethesda is one of the worst offenders for this), but a good game is a good game, whether you use mods to get there or not. There's also a substantial amount of variation in which games have interesting mods, which is a product of how easy it is to mod the game (both in a technical sense and in terms of how the game is structured) and how much of a historic modding community the franchise/studio's following has built up (which is quite a bit, in the case of TES/Bethesda). In that regard, studios do deserve some credit for making a game that has significant potential to be modded to be awesome, especially if they've actively cultivated a modding community (Factorio, for example, integrates a mod manager directly into the game, the studio works with modders to solve technical issues that are totally irrelevant for vanilla players, and they've hired several modders to be a part of their team).

More serious ethical considerations aside (like employee abuse or all studio profits being donated to Puppy Kickers International or something) the only thing that matters for determining how good a game is is how much enjoyment players get out of it. Again, studios should be criticized for failing to make a good game is mods are necessary to have a good time, but that good time is no less of a good time because mods are involved in having it.

Or anything that limits arm position, really. Until it becomes difficult to move one of your arms, you don't really realize just how restrictive typical controllers are. I'm not about to suggest that Joycons are perfect controllers, but that design is really the only reason I was able to finish replaying Xenoblade 2 before 3 came out. Heck, it was the only reason I could play much of anything those two weeks, since I couldn't use a standard controller or use a mouse and keyboard at the same time. I could probably have found something to play with just a mouse or with one-handed keyboard controls (I normally use my mouse left-handed when I'm not playing a M+KB game, so thankfully that wasn't affected), but nothing like that was on my radar at the time, so it was good that I could keep going with Xenoblade.

didnt they do that already with the Wii?

Kind of. Wiichucks offer a lot of similar benefits to Joycons (namely that you can hold your hands wherever you want), but functionality-wise they're missing out on a lot of things that keep them from being fully functional as a modern controller (even by 2006 standards, which aren't overly different from what we see today). With Joycons, you've got everything a regular controller would have, but they're completely split.

That came in really handy when I broke my elbow a couple years ago and had my right arm stuck in a sling for two weeks. Instead of trying to hold a regular controller awkwardly off to the side, I was able to use split Joycons in whatever position I wanted and experience only a minor downgrade in the experience. I hadn't previously considered the accessibility angle of it, but it's actually kind of a huge deal. In the same vein, there are 1-handed Joycon grips out there that are literally just an L-shaped piece of plastic, allowing both Joycons to be held and used by players that only have one hand available. One-handed grips for traditional controllers also exist, but they're vastly more complicated to assemble and use, so kudos to the Joycons for being so simple to adapt.

If so, I'm not particularly well-suited for any of those, but I guess track and field provides a reasonably varied experience while also letting me focus more on sprinting and other short-term exertions (exercise-induced asthma means running for long periods of time doesn't work so well).

Being comfortable outside in a t-shirt without a jacket for extended periods of time? I'd draw that line around 5C/40F, but for short periods even -10-20C isn't that bad.

It's definitely weird, but most of that weirdness and any subsequent issues it might create are just cultural. Kissing (on the lips or otherwise) has no more intrinsic meaning than any other form of physical contact. If it creates issues, that's because of other cultural factors assigning value to it that cause confusion and discomfort when it happens unexpectedly, or when somebody doesn't understand those cultural norms (which can be a product of an upbringing that ignores them) and encounters conflict as a result.

Basically, "never do it ever" isn't really reasonable, but "you'll mess your kid up by doing it in America" is valid.

At this point I question how a reasonable person cannot think of a life saver as having a hole in it. That's pretty much the definition of a hole even by common sense standards, which is of course why I used it as an example.

Because a toroid is a complete, self-contained shape. The hole is not "in" the toroid per se, but rather comprises space outside of the shape itself.

Consider forming a bagel. There are two common ways to do this:
  • Take a ball of dough, then punch a hole through it and shape it into a ring
  • Take a ball of dough, roll it into a rope, then press the ends together to form a ring
In the former case, you form the toroid by creating a hole in a disc. In the latter case, you didn't create a hole in anything, you just enclosed space by wrapping an object around it. Can the hole really be said to be a part of the toroid, in that case? Why think about toroids as discs that are missing their centre and not as their own discrete shape?

In the same vein, a straw can either be considered to be a hollow cylinder that's missing its ends (in which case it's got two holes) or a sheet that has been rolled into a circular shape (in which case it's got no holes because passage through the object is not part of the object itself).

For perhaps an easier example, does a room count as a hole in the walls around it?

Do you think of the Large Hadron Collider as having an 8 km hole in the middle of it (a hole that's full or Earth, of course, since a hole in a shape doesn't stop being a hole if it's filled with something other than the material that comprises the shape)? If not, why would you think of a lifesaver as having a 5 mm hole in the middle of it? At what point do you start thinking of a toroid as being a disc with a hole through it and not a bent cylinder?

Like most math, geometry gets weird when you start getting into the absolute fundamentals that ignore common sense for the sake of defining absolute truths.

Every game on every system lags if there's too much going on. That's how "too much going on" is defined.

Tautology aside, significant lag was pretty rare in TotK. Some happened from time to time, and can mostly be blamed on the Switch's limitations (though the game's performance as a whole was very impressive), but it certainly wasn't anywhere close to "this game is barely playable on *old system* and needs to be released on *new system* to be enjoyable." Depending on how the backwards compatibility works, there's also a fair chance that Switch games will perform better on the next system than on the Switch itself, without needing an actual rerelease.

if you think they're going to rerelease titles on it like that, Nintendo doesn't do that

I mean, they did it with almost the entire first-party WiiU library, but that was a bit of an exceptional case because the WiiU sold so poorly that those games needed a second chance to recover their investment. That was clearly a good idea, given that MK8 Deluxe has sold 5 times as many copies as the WiiU itself did.

Given that the Switch is one of the best-selling systems of all time, though, and many of the first-party games on it have become best-selling entries in their respective series (AC:NH sold better than the entire rest of the AC series combined, Smash Ultimate achieved nearly the same thing, MK8 Deluxe accounts for a third of the MK series sales...), I wouldn't expect to see a repeat of that. The Switch has been wildly successful. There's no reason to expect its games to be rereleased to make up for its failure when it objectively hasn't been a failure. This is even more true when you consider that the successor is going to be backwards compatible, so a rerelease isn't necessary to let people play Switch games on it.

Timezones are more political than scientific which feels like it defeats the purpose.

Not so much "political" as just being convenient. If chunks of Alaska were on a different day from the rest of the country at all times, that'd be a nightmare to work around. Similarly, even if you could make a case for, say, having half of Quebec on Atlantic time, it's easier to just make the whole province Eastern than to have to remember that Montreal and Quebec City are in different time zones.

At the end of the day, time zones are always going to be approximations in how well they relate to the day-night cycle. Even if you did divide the earth up with 24 perfect north-south lines, the sun is going to set an hour later on the western edge of any given time zone than on the eastern edge. With that in mind, fudging zone lines a bit to make them easier to remember and minimize the chance that people in a given state (or similar geopolitical region) have to think about what time it is in another city within that state is pretty reasonable. There are limits, of course, and examples of it being a little silly, but I still don't see a problem with taking some liberties.

Ah, yes, that's fair. Making necessary purchases with interest makes some sense (like if your fridge breaks down you're not going to not have a fridge, so if you need to finance one to get it, go for it), but discretionary ones? Yeah, that's pretty dumb, especially if you fall into the trap of doing it for more things at once than you can afford to cover.

If you're out and about near sunrise, though, getting more and more light to start your day for a few weeks before DST ends and it suddenly gets dark again, that's very noticeable, and I find that really messes with me.

Clocks changing automatically can help keep you from being consciously aware of it, but unless your daily schedule shifts at the same time, you're likely to notice some changes in how light it is before/after work.

Big picture is I don't care just stop changing

But if I had to pick one - sun rises late and sets late.

That's really where the issue comes in: Most people agree it should stop, but nobody can agree on which one to pick. So we keep alternating between them.

Having too little fibre can cause constipation because you just don't have the bulk to move things along, but having too much fibre can also cause constipation because you end up with too much bulk and you struggle to keep it hydrated well enough to move smoothly.

digging yourself into a deeper high interest hole is opposite of a solution to that.

Depends on the details of the situation. If you simply aren't making enough money to keep up with ongoing expenses, then yes, going into CC debt to cover the shortfall is just going to make things worse. If you're short for the month's rent because of some significant one-time expenses that wiped out your savings, though, and you know that long-term you'll be making enough to cover your ongoing expenses, the interest, and work toward paying it down, going into CC debt is better than getting evicted for not paying rent (though it's better if you can restructure the debt into something lower-interest).

It's not a long-term solution to not making enough money, but it is a useful safety net for financial emergencies. Aside from the obvious interest costs associated with doing so, there's nothing wrong with using that safety net when needed.

Defenders simply don't have the aggro generation to actually keep aggro, so they're just delaying everyone else's eventual death.

They're usually okay if you haven't gone too deep into trying to squeeze out the most damage you can from your attackers, so I expect they're fine for more casual play (at least in the base game, one of the FR characters deals a ludicrous amount of damage if you're even halfway competent with them and the poor defenders never stood a chance). There's *so* much potential for min-maxing damage, though, that you very quickly outstrip what "low damage with an aggro buff" can keep up with and just end up with a character whose only real use is that they're less likely to die to AoE (but can't natively revive anyone, so if they're the last one standing it's probably already a wipe).

By and large, defenders are kind of meh. They've got interesting design philosophies going into the classes and are thematically cool, but their defenses generally aren't strong enough to justify sticking with "low damage with an aggro multiplier" over "high damage plz don't hurt me," especially with the defensive layers you can put on attackers and healers if you're so inclined. Early-game, that's not as applicable because you don't have all of the tools you need to make attacker/healer tanks work, but as you master more classes and get more gems/accessories to help you out, don't be surprised if you find yourself leaning a little more toward hitting harder over having dedicated tanks.

Buffs are indeed a little under-explained. Most are pretty self-explanatory, but the big ones that aren't are Power Charge (1.5x multiplier for your next damaging art) and Awakening (75% damage boost, 25% damage resistance, 50% art recharge bonus, plus some art-specific boosts). Both are, as you can guess, very strong, but take some finagling to make full use of.

IIRC, it's Flash Fencer that gives you your first experience with the Power Charge buff, which will become very important as you start building up. It's an independent 1.5x damage multiplier to the next damaging art you use, so I'm sure you can imagine how delightful that can get.

#1 is obviously Hawaii.

Geographically, Hawaii very obviously makes the most sense, but economically I don't think they could do it without continuing to use the US dollar and maintaining open borders with the US so American travellers don't need passports to go. The tourism industry just has so much of a stranglehold on their economy that if they did anything to make it harder to visit, it would hurt them pretty massively. There's also a very substantial amount of American money invested in villas and such owned by the uber-wealthy (like Zuckerberg's Wagyu beef ranch), and while that alone wouldn't prevent them from seceding, it could definitely present a complication.

And, really, if you're going to keep using the US dollar, keep open borders with the US, and allow Americans to buy and own real estate without jumping through any extra hoops, what's the point in seceding? Granted, you did just say that they'd have the fewest bad outcomes, not actually that it's a good idea, so I'm guessing you're already there.

At this point I legit believe that it's not that they're not using 2D because they don't want to, but because they can't.

They're still using 2D animation for a lot of the tv series they do, so it's not like the talent isn't there at all. There just doesn't seem to be any appetite for bringing that into movies.

I can't imagine anyone (other than adjl, apparently) who thought to themselves, "Man, what this world really needs right now is more movies set in the Lion King cinematic universe."

There's a fair amount of additional lore that's been established by comics and other media, and while I haven't personally explored it beyond the obligatory "Scar used to be named Taka which means the brothers were named 'King' and 'Garbage' in Swahili lol" that pretty much everyone knows, but I've usually got at least some baseline interest in opportunities to expand the worldbuilding and lore behind stuff I like. I like Lion King (though apparently it's been 10+ years since I've seen it, since I went to the stage show a month or so ago and realized that it hits a little different after losing a parent personally, and my dad died in 2014), so a movie exploring some of the lore that's been established that I haven't dug into was enough to pique my interest.

But then the "live-action" thing kind of kills that interest. I still haven't even seen the remake because I don't see much point in watching something that remade the original frame-for-frame but just worse in every way.
