I don't consume a terrible amount of Japanese media (probably less than most people), but I've never seen actual Japanese media use it as shorthand for petite. That seems to be an invention of western anime communities.

A better way to understand it is to go through the history of the word. Lolita, the book, came out and caused an upsurge in people thinking it was okay to lust after children. Because English is a highly popular language to use in Japan the term "Lolita complex" came about to refer to people who were into girls as depicted in the book (ie. pretty overtly underage). It would then get shortened to "lolicon", as is very common to do in Japanese (especially on the Internet). There would be a further shortening to "loli", the word that refers to the person that that lolicon lusts after.

It is very explicitly what you are referring to with the caveat that it only refers to girls (shotacon is for boys) as far as a Japanese audience is concerned. The biggest change would be from the non-Japanese one, which has taken a very "sanitize the word" stance in the same way that conservatives use dogwhistles. Something along the lines of a 1000 year old dragon that looks and acts as if she is seven is somehow enough to show that it is actually about just being youthful, as an example.

Depends on the performance and gameplay. Didn't buy SV because of the performance issues and I'm not going to buy any game that runs terribly period. Liked Arceus a lot, but that doesn't guarantee anything.

Whether or not it's a slur is the obvious thing. "Bishounen" just refers to the idea of a boy being pretty, without any onus put on the viewer. In addition, while "is pretty" includes a feminine aspect to it in this context, there is no assumption that the person in question looks in any way like a girl. Arguably the most popular look for a bishounen character is in a butler outfit, something very decidedly something that wouldn't be considered women's clothing.

Inversely, "trap" very much puts all of the onus on the viewer. It uses a loaded term in a way that essentially accuses the recipient of "tricking" them. The person in question is basically being treated as a non-entity whose entire existence is only a thing to mess with the viewers in a sexually charged sort of way. In that way it is an accusation, not a description, and it treats the choices of the accused as somehow extremely disingenuous when the reality is that it's pretty much entirely the fault of the accuser for being so thin-skinned (to put it lightly).

Once the Republican attempt at trolling by putting a memorial day for Kirk on George Floyd's birthday failed it kind of just lost steam because no one actually gave a crap about him, and the fact that he was a garbage piece of trash meant that they couldn't really show any clips of him to try and turn him into anything of a martyr.

I was more just meaning for people who aren't interested in switching. Like, Orlandeau is famously one of the most OP characters in all of gaming but even then Arithmetician is *easily* the best class in the game. Plenty of late-game unique characters are really good, but in the end the biggest reason to run them outside of the oddball situations is "because I want to."

Pretty much the only reason to use other units is to level up a couple of the relevant unique-class characters for the oddball times that they become relevant (such as Worker for his "lol magic" bit).

The point is if someone blew up people with whatever people would stop trying to interact with you. It makes people wanting to keep interact in a cheery manner less understandable. With a phrase like sorry/excuse me, it makes noticeably more sense. The localization made Squall significantly more...rude is perhaps the right word...or standoffish.

As already brought up that particular line is very rude and standoffish. A comparison to Link's "Well excuuuse me, Princess" line is very apt to localizing the emotion behind the line. Do not confuse translation for localization.

Really wish I could find the detailed video that went into depth on this (the claim for more varied dialogue comes from there). But yes, the translation team did the fans a disservice going with "...Whatever...". It gives him an almost "emo" edgelord feel that wasn't what the developers were going for.

What I was talking about was that people treat it as a one-way street: that the only times he could have said his Japanese catchphrase is when he said his English one. For instance:

In that screenshot he might not have said his English catchphrase, but that "...Sorry" was when he said his Japanese one. Thus you ended up with the "crunch of them turning a bunch of lines into "...whatever", but that he still is waaaay less about saying a catchphrase in the English version.

Though the "dark and brooding" protag was always somewhat the intent. That type of protagonist was pretty popular in Japan during that period, hence why half the cast was some shade of dark and brooding in the game that they made with the intention of half the cast being the potential main protag (FFVI).

I referenced several common sources for this. Ultimecia's correct name (transliteration) has been discussed A LOT. Do a google search or whatever you use. I've also clarified this in the past. Some parts of the motifs were lifted from previous topics and YouTube videos which go over the subject (and how "Whatever" is a bad translation on what Squall is saying). I did a lot of work on making everything fit together regarding the two Artemisia I & II motifs and expanding on some under explained parts, although the artist inspiration is my own addition less commonly brought up (still is thought) but is still relevant.

I'm surprised more people are aware of the connections to Artemisia I of Caria in particular due to further discussion on FF8's themes and other modern takes in media on the historical character.

I'm calling it AI slop because it's reaching on all levels in the same way that AI does, and it follows the cadence that you get when you ask AI for something (summary paragraph -> bulleted list).

In this case it's simple to just talk about the first one as at least it's simple to quantify the reaching. First off is the "theme of loss and transformation", which doesn't make even the tiniest bit of sense. Ultimecia has not lost anything, nor did she transform in any way beyond the literal. She is fated to lose in a form of time loop, sure, but that has utterly nothing to do with a thematic loss. The two things are baffling to even tie to her, and even if they were they would end up applying to literally every villain in the series: a ridiculous farce of a point to be made.

Then you bring up the concept of legacy, as if the sheer act of having time powers is enough to draw a connection. Ultimecia in no way, shape, or form has anything to do with a "legacy" motif, and it certainly wouldn't have anything to do with her time powers. Heck, you don't even mention some of the aspects of the game that do at least fit the motif (Squall + Laguna's backstory, for instance), further making it sound like "AI that knows jack crap grabbing stuff from the Internet" rather than something researched. Ultimecia wants no legacy (literally the point of the time kompression), she has no legacy, and she comes from nothing. She has no legacy motif.

Finally you bring up the literal act of her being a woman as a point. And, I mean, it's true that Ultimecia is a woman and Artemisia is a woman's name. So what? If you were making the point that they just picked the name because they liked the sound of it that would be one thing, but what exactly does "female sovereignty" have to do with anything beyond the literal act of having a woman as an antagonist? Artemisia I would be considered a powerful woman because of her military wit, something that doesn't apply to Ultimecia. Artemisia II, on the other hand, isn't even known for being a powerful woman beyond literally being in charge after the death of her husband. And if you want to stretch it you can say she was powerful because she was able to overcome the death of her husband, but that's just like the Artemisia I connection in that you could say that the connection is proof that she isn't related at all. Ultimecia wasn't a good military mind, she was obsessed with power to the point that she wanted it all. Ultimecia wasn't strong of heart, she was terrified of a fated death to the point that she wanted to turn all of time into a single moment that she could rule. The idea falls flat on its face once you move beyond the literal "is woman antagonist" bit.

And we can continue on with the Gentileschi comment, as that's just the same as before: woman famous enough that her name gets a Wikipedia page has a similar name. All villains in Final Fantasy are powerful, Ultimecia isn't particularly vengeful, and Ultimecia is only defiant in the literal sense and not in the way that would imply a theme or motif as would make the connection meaningful. It's the same as people bringing up Artemis, another fan theory name potential, in that any potential is far more based on the name similarity more than it has anything to do with any actual ties. It, however, at least has some weight because Ultimecia at least has some narrative connections to Greek mythos, just with Oedipus and not with someone who just so happens to have a similar name.

I've heard about that as well. He does have a catch phrase that is more like, "Excuse me!" as in "Excuse me Princess!", but he doesn't say it as often and has more varied dialogue over parts that just become, "Whatever".

His catchphrase is warukatta na ( ), which is better translated as "sorry" (though because of its terse nature it can be localized as "excuse me"). He also says it considerably more than the English version says "whatever," though just in different spots (which is where the misunderstanding about "varied dialogue" comes in).

Bounce > Dodge > Juggle. Bounce wasn't that bad with Reaper, Dodge was RNG-ish but I didn't have that big of an issue, and the Juggle just wasn't working for me at all.

I have never read a Harry Potter book or watched any of the films. But I did like the video game Bully, Personas, and Fire Emblem Three Houses. I like the school/university type of games as a unique controlled universe.

It is more comparable to something like Assassin's Creed, or any other Ubisoft-style open world game.

Nah. Until it hits 100% off it's still way too expensive.

That indie one, however, shows promise. Not out yet, though, so who knows on that front.
