I just don't get why he won't allow himself to be on the right side of the issue. Somewhere deep down he must know how fucked up this and how fucked up he sounds. Indeed, and thats why that particular country is a wildcard right now. For all we know, they could just go screw it tomorrow and start lobbing nukes left, right, and center considering how destabilized their command structure is currently.

This is much easier to do for a country that actually has nukes.

If you wanna be real pedantic... There's two major companies here, Foodstuffs and Woolworths (that both own multiple chains, although all but one of Woolworths' chains are very minor). The competition is only between Foodstuffs stores, so it's possible there's a better one who works for a Woolworths store; or perhaps one who wasn't yet employed at the time of the competition. Although considering I apparently beat the previous record on speed by a considerable margin (something like 55 seconds, compared to 70ish being typical for someone who wins the contest)...

On what planet would someone consider a 4 year old phone a prize. Must be refurbished since by year 2 all the new stock is usually gone.

The headphones were a way older model too, but at least with those being an older model is basically a non-issue lol (aside from the slight annoyance of using micro USB rather than USB-C to charge, but they need charging so rarely that this isn't much of a problem). Pretty sure the phone is never opened. Oh yeah, not only a four year old model but the lowest end one at that (the plain 12 rather than Pro or anything, 64GB storage).

I'd almost wonder if the prizes are devices that were meant for management use but remained spare so they do this to get rid of them. But then I doubt they'd be buying Beats headphones at all, let alone to the point of excess, for staff. Maybe it's old stock from a partner company or something.

Haven't used them while voice chatting with you so not sure how well they convey susness. They're pretty solid in general tho.

Kinda rethinking whether I sell the iPhone. It *is* still an upgrade in terms of capabilities over my current phone (Oppo A94 5G) even if it's not outright incredible. On the other hand, I'm not super keen on iOS.

Eh, the usefulness of this is overrated. A lot of things are two button presses to find in the menu, vs five presses for the code. It's useful for stuff that's buried deeper in there or knowing what's not in the menu at all, though.

It's a combination of customer service, presentation (correct uniform etc), accuracy and speed. Speed is the tiebreaker, but in practice it really does come down to speed for the top positions as the people in the top spots tend to have perfect marks on everything else. Apparently I was ahead by a significant margin on that.

Ironically I'm hardly ever even on the counter these days; I'm mostly supervising.

Or at least out of three of the four major chains.

They do a yearly competition thing that involves an actual competing round plus a mystery shop and I won first place.

Ironically, the prize I got for the local round (Beats wireless headphones and a $500 gift card) was better, at least for me personally, than the prize for the national (an iPhone 12, 64GB). Probably just gonna sell the iPhone whereas I've been very much enjoying the headphones.

Whats an Oppo phone?

Oppo is a brand that makes Android phones. Fair bit cheaper than Samsung and still pretty decent. Currently on the Oppo A94 5G; nothing amazing but it's done almost everything I've wanted it to so far (apart from streaming games from a PC, which could very possibly be the PC or router's fault).

Those stuck in the traffic must have found it unbearable.

Should add I don't know which model it is either. Might be a bit more inclined to not keep it if it's one of the older ones with Lightning, cause that'll just get frustrating.

(Context is, won it in a work-related competition, I didn't attend the prizegiving whatever thingy and I'm on leave until Friday. The boss videocalled and showed me the box and said I'd won "a new iPhone" but I didn't see/ask what one exactly it was. I'll find out when I grab it, probably gonna pop in later today to pick it up.)

Yeah, but I already have my passwords saved in Firefox. Likewise, I'd be accessing them through that on other devices. I did vaguely see something about being able to set a password manager.

EDIT: Bit more Googling suggests I can do this. This is the main thing for me - I don't want to get too tied into Apple's ecosystem. Buying the odd cheap app from the Apple store is fine; having to move all my established shit into their ecosystem (and worse, keep it synced between that and the rest because I'm still using a Windows PC and if I'm going to move to anything else it's Linux rather than Mac) isn't.

D. It's a good sign the other side doesn't know what they're saying, but it doesn't necessarily mean you're right. It may just mean they don't fully understand why they're right.

So I won an iPhone and. I might just sell it but weighing up the options. (It would be an upgrade and I'm kinda due for one. If I do sell it I'll probably put at least part of the money towards a decent and recent Oppo phone, or maybe go fancy and get the Samsung equivalent.)

Was wondering in particular:

• What's the adblocker situation like? For the browser in particular.
• I understand you can't really use third party browsers properly. Can you still use Firefox as a login manager?

If we're talking about music in English then, I think the UK has always been pretty receptive to music from other English speaking counties.

It seems to go in cycles. Sometimes music from the UK seems to be where it's at; sometimes it gets in a rut and all the good stuff is coming from elsewhere.

It's not so much about whether they like foreign music, more like whether they tend to like local music that isn't particularly good (when they don't like similar non-local music, even if they do like actually good non-local music).

NZ has produced some awesome bands over the years. Thinking of pretty much anything on Flying Nun.

I think the English speaking world is incredibly ignorant of music in non-English speaking countries. Watching Eurovision, I'm always surprised to learn that artists I've never heard of are huge stars in their country who have sold millions (case in point being France's entry).

Probably like 70% of my large playlist and nearly 100% of my smaller one is non-English lol. But this topic I more had in mind cases without a language barrier (which does at least somewhat make sense; even beyond that some people just won't want to listen to songs they can't understand, some languages really do sound better in music than others - personally I'd argue English is one of the worse ones).

It's kinda fun, not overly amazing. I see them a lot at amusement parks too; it's kinda become a defacto habit for me that it's always the first ride I go on. I guess it's just because the only significant one in the country has a pirate ship right by the entrance; the only ride that's closer is the bumper cars and that is not first ride material at all.

Ones that go 360 degrees are a LOT more fun.

Like there's a specific thing I'm thinking of but dunno what to call it. In the US it'd probably be more fair to compare it on a state level than a country one, too.

But anyway like... Here in NZ, simple fact is most NZ music is mediocre at best. Some is awesome, but that segment is irrelevant to this. What I'm thinking of is how a lot of NZers will still act like it's amazing just because it's local. You give them something similar from an artist from the US or even Australia, they won't like it. Heck, tell them it's from somewhere else if they don't know either way, they won't. But if it's NZ music, it gets a pass.

Does this exist anywhere else too or is this a weird NZ thing?

(Obviously it's a bit different when a language barrier is involved, I'm more thinking about other English-speaking countries, or perhaps other cases of a common language.)
