SMB2 was also awesome, SMB3 was ok

You're the first person I've ever seen rank 2 over 3.

well, I was describing my initial reaction to them as a kid. as an adult I would say that SMB3 is probably a technically better game, but I still enjoy 2 more.

3 does lots of things good, too, though. for one, it's an impossibly good NES game in terms of technical quality. it almost might as well be a SNES game except for the lack of colors and lower sound quality.

3 has one of the best Bowser fights ever, it has the whole dark world army thing, nothing beats the airship theme especially accompanied by the cannon blasts and lightning. (though now that I think of it, ALL of that is significantly better in Mario All-Stars)

also, I am glossing over a time when I did think it was the best mario game so far, but it was very shortlived. SMW is better in almost every way except maybe challenge. and nowadays I just don't enjoy basically anything about 3 except maybe as I mentioned the airship theme and world 8.

what's great about 2 is how unique it is; it has such interesting and innovative gameplay for a 2d platformer, it's too bad there aren't more games that borrow its style.

mostly agree, it's always been ok at best. SMB1 was mind-blowing as a kid, SMB2 was also awesome, SMB3 was ok, and then SMW was more than mind-blowing (really you have no idea how orgasmic the jump to the SNES was...).

I remember being at a video game party where you had a gaming station and could ask for any NES game and they'd bring it and you could play it. I asked for "mario" expecting SMB1 but they brought SMB3, and I was like "wtf is this shit!?".

What reason do you have to attribute that to biology, rather than sociology?

studies have shown that the more freedom men and women have to do what they want and the less society tells them what they should want, the *more* biological differences matter and the *more* they choose supposedly "stereotypical" jobs.

_AdjI_ posted...
Serious question: Have you ever actually met any women? And interacted with them beyond that initial meeting? Because the only time I would consider that to be true is in the cases where the prevailing cultural ideal is that women who act aggressively and assertively will be seen as bossy and/or bitchy and fired instead of promoted. Take away the preconceived expectations that they should be docile and motherly, and women act pretty much exactly the same as men.

this is ridiculous. most violence is male VS male violence. males need to climb social dominance hierarchies, and if there's no other way to do it, they'll resort to violence to do it.

another thing I heard that relates to this. IQ is a symmetrical bell curve for both men, and for women. so evenly distributed intelligence regardless of sex.

the difference is (supposedly) that mens' bell curve is flatter and wider. so men have a higher tendency towards the extremes. this means that if you take all of the smartest (or dumbest) people in the world, the majority of them will be male.

so when you have a place like google or even all of silicon valley, if it really is meritocratic (like it arguably should be), then as a gathering place of the smartest people in the world, the tendency is going to be that it's a male majority.

it depends how you say it. if you say "women [can] not get ahead at Google because of biological differences", that's wrong, women can get ahead if they want to, and no one can tell them they can't.

if you say "women are 'biologically' less likely to succeed in tech" that's a little better

but I think maybe better still is something like "women are generally biologically predisposed not to want to succeed in tech".

it's not that they can't, or that they necessarily have any disadvantage, it's that given the option, women themselves will tend to choose not to.

Windows isn't a mobile platform, they're just incompetent.

basically. someone with authority and no clue is pushing redesigns of things without allowing a proper software design cycle to generate a well designed product.

the completely idiotic Visual Studio icon redesign was the first time I was hit by this. just a completely thoughtless redesign to something that didn't need it that ended up ruining a crucial part of the whole product.

but now I'm seeing that same spirit of "change what doesn't need changing, oops I guess we made it way worse" in windows 10.

the problem is, from a naive point of view, Microsoft is a company that can make O/S software, word processing software, spreadsheet software, and so on, right? well no, they actually do NOT have that capability.

they are a company that *happens to own the code base* for an O/S, word processor, spreadsheet, etc.

they tweak it here and there on the surface, but they aren't generating this kind of software from scratch, like ever, and even with all the tweaks it's the same thing under the covers. Things like the print server, or joining windows domains, or modifying network settings, underneath that's all the same exact stuff that's been there since at least Windows 3.1. it just gets buried underneath more and more BS UIs. I still deal with print server problems that I've been dealing with since Windows 3.1 because there's no real redesign of anything that matters, just the superficial presentation part, trying to wow the end user with a fancy appearance despite having no real difference aside from the presentation. (exceptions abound probably. the "ribbon" idea is a new thing they came up with that maybe isn't all bad. I think I like the windows 10 start menu, and it IS more functional than older start menus.)

that doesn't account for the severity of the pain you're describing, but it is surprisingly easy (at least for me) to develop a new micro-habit which ends up causing a sore shoulder or knee or something.

I know what you guys mean, but the thing with static damage to electronics is that it's insidious. if you zap it now, it won't necessarily die now, it will die a year from now for no apparent reason. or you'll be plagued by BSODs once a week or so and wonder why. that kind of thing. it causes micro-level damage that may or may not have an immediate effect, but very likely will have a long term effect.

IIRC there's another similar problem with metallic fibres. (looking it up it's called 'whiskering'.) certain kinds of metals can grow tiny 'whiskers' over time, which then break off, float away, fall on something, and short it out.

helly posted...
it hasn't actually mattered for like, more than 10 years.
