Sequence of Events during RFA

1. I will privately contact every user and inform them of their RFAs and the tender levels. If you don’t have any RFAs, then you won’t be notified.

2. Users will have five days to inform me which players they wish to sign and at what level.

3. I will publicly reveal all RFAs from user and A.I. teams that can be signed by other teams (AKA were offered a tender) plus their tender levels and the base kind of deal they are looking for.

4. I will give users five days to decide any action, if any, they wish to take. If they do wish to take further action, they will PM me.

Now by "any action you wish to take," I mean that everyone has an opportunity to attempt to sign RFAs from other teams. You might see some sticker shock but keep in mind that some positions are more expensive (WRs, DTs, QBs) than others (OLBs, Cs, TEs) relative to their overall rating. An 80 WR will usually be more expensive than a 90 C, and that's just how things are

5. If a team attempts to sign another team’s RFA, then the user who owns the RFA’s rights will have three days to decide whether or not to match the offer.

Restricted Free Agency

This minor but oddly detailed offseason event is for a small subset of players who just completed their untampered rookie contract that was exactly three years in length. These players are not eligible to be originally offered multi-year contracts by the team that holds their rights but but instead one-year contracts of fixed figures based on the tender level that you offer them.

Our Tender Levels for this season
No Tender = no potential draft pick compensation = $0
Low Tender = potential original round draft pick compensation = $760k
Mid Tender = potential 1st round draft pick compensation = $1.65 mil
High Tender = potential 1st + 3rd round draft pick compensation = $2.20 mil

Now, the mentioning of draft pick compensation there is only applicable if another team attempts to sign your player. It has no bearing on this first phase of RFA. It wouldn't make much sense if you had to give up draft picks to sign your own player now would it? Newcomers and people who don't have a good memory are certainly free to ask me what round a player was drafted in if that affects their tender level.

That being said, you might want to keep in mind about that draft pick compensation when you determine what tender to offer your player. If you think very highly of your player, you might want to offer the highest tender to deter other teams from attempting to sign them. If you don't consider a player to be a part of your future plans, you might want to offer the low tender so that they barely count against your cap space and you could end up even getting draft pick compensation if someone else wants him.

A word of advice from me: The full monetary amount attached to the tenders is NOT GUARANTEED and in many cases is less than what they would make on the open market, so there is essentially 0 risk to offering all of your players a tender unless you personally hate them with a passion.

You can also engage trade talks with other teams so that you can prearrange a trade that if X player is not signed by another team, you will trade them to Y team for Z compensation that might be lower than what Y team would have had to give up to sign them during RFA. In this scenario, you might want to offer the highest tender level to deter the maximum amount of teams from disrupting the trade.

The Slashline

This is really just for MZero (assuming he forgot all about it) and Tangicide. All contract related info that I post or PM during the offseason, and there will be plenty of it, will come in this format that you need to familiarize yourself with

Example slashline:
3 / $10.0 mil / $3.00 mil

3 = Length in years of the contract. All contracts can be anywhere from 1-7 years in length with two exceptions that we will get to later.

$10.0 mil = Total amount of money paid to the player during the life of the contract. Should the player receiving this contract play out the entire contract on your team, his combined cap hits during those seasons will equal this figure. However, with multi-year contracts, the cap hits won't be the same figure each season unless the third figure is $0.

They are always in ascending order, meaning the first year cap hit will be the lowest and will only rise from there. Using this particular contract, the first year might have a cap hit of $2.68 mil, $3.33 mil in the second year, and $3.99 mil in the final year. This is useful info to know when you determine how long you wish to sign a player for.

$3.00 mil = The amount of the total money that is guaranteed. Guaranteed money basically means how much the team who the player originally signed with is on the hook for no matter what. This is paid in equal installments every season, with this example being $1.00 mil ($3.00 mil / 3). Should he play out that contract with said team, this figure doesn't really matter. It does however matter when it comes to trading and releasing players.

Should you trade or release a player with guaranteed money on their contract, you will receive a cap penalty the following season (you might have heard the term "dead money" in real life) that equals the remaining amount of guaranteed money left on the contract. You know how much guaranteed money is left on a contract by looking at the Team Financial sheet. There is a tab labeled "Annual Bonus" for all user teams with a number attached to each player. If you multiply that number by the years remaining on their contract, you will know how much of a cap penalty you will receive the following year should you release or trade them.

If the player is traded, then the team who receives him will not have to pay the annual bonus for any subsequent season. Using this example, let's say this player was traded after the first season. Since I said his 2nd and 3rd year cap hits were $3.33 mil and $3.99 mil and the annual bonus was $1.00 mil, his cap hits for the new team for the final two years would be $2.33 mil and $2.99 mil.

If the player is released, then whatever new contract he signs will not have the previous one be a factor. If he signs the exact same contract with a new team, the old example figures would be essentially the same for the new team.

Okay, so there are nine players that have demanded trades this offseason. Six are from user teams, three are from AI teams. All nine players are HBs. Thus, I spent some time last night coming up with potential three-way trades since I am of the opinion that it makes sense that all HBs are swapped for one another given their proximity in talent and also gives you a quality backup or starter at the position on a fully non-guaranteed contract that will enable you to release or trade them again in the future.

That being said, you are free to determine your own value for such players, and I also do not publicly reveal who is demanding a trade. When I send out PMs shortly, you can decide whether or not to reveal that info, but should multiple users do so, I will be willing to divulge what trades I came up with concerning all consenting parties.

As a reminder, this is the trade format that we use in B8NFLL

Team A receives:
Player B / Pick C

Team D receives:
Player E / Pick F

Then there's a 24 hour peer review period in which all users can voice their approval or veto the proposed trade. If it passes after that 24 hour period (no set number of vetoes, but I typically use the level of general sentiment), then the trade is made official and will go into effect once all users involved post saying that they agree to the parameters of the trade. It's best that involved users say they agree during the review period.
