On Wednesday morning, President Donald Trump sat down with House and Senate leaders from both parties and struck a deal to tackle Congress’s month from hell. That deal ended up being just what Democrats wanted, and has reportedly left Republicans howling with protest. “I am told by multiple sources [that Republican leaders] are furious,” Politico’s Jake Sherman tweeted. “All GOP leaders were opposed.”

According to the deal, the top three items on Congress’s agenda — hurricane aid money, increasing the debt ceiling, and funding the government — will all be approved as part of a bipartisan agreement. That’s good for everyone, since these were all must-pass measures, and Congress’s failure to act on any of the three this month would have been disastrous.

But the reason Democrats are so happy lies in the details and, specifically, the calendar. That is: The debt ceiling increase and government funding money will only last three months, until mid-December. This is exactly what Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi wanted — in fact, they publicly proposed it before the meeting.

And it’s exactly what House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell feared, and are said to have argued against in the meeting with Trump. In fact, on Wednesday morning Ryan called the idea of a three-month debt limit increase “ridiculous,” “disgraceful,” and “unworkable” — just hours before Trump agreed to it.

Why Republicans in Congress so dislike this deal
The critical background here is that the Republican Party hates dealing with the debt ceiling. GOP leaders know that the debt ceiling must be increased, or else a US debt default with damaging economic consequences would ensue. But conservative activists have spent years agitating against a “clean” debt limit hike without accompanying spending cuts. And many Republican lawmakers who have portrayed themselves as tough on spending fear being criticized from the right for supporting such a measure.

Because the issue so divides the GOP, Republicans can’t come close to passing a debt ceiling increase with just their own party’s votes — they need a lot of Democrats, and that means they need to strike a deal with Democratic leaders.

All this ugliness is why Ryan and McConnell wanted a debt ceiling increase that would last through the 2018 elections. They wanted the debt ceiling issue off their plates so they could move on to other issues, like tax reform, which they hoped to pass by the end of the year. Instead, though, this deal all but ensures the December legislative calendar will be dominated by a painful showdown over the debt ceiling and government funding.

Then there’s the matter of Trump’s border wall money. For months, the president has been signaling that he’d demand money for his wall be included in any government funding bill. He’s even suggested he’d be happy to risk a government shutdown to get his wall money. But what Trump is clearly not willing to risk is a default on the nation’s debt — he doesn’t want to play that game of chicken.

In agreeing to this deal, Trump is putting aside his demand for border wall money for the time being, perhaps hoping to revisit the issue in December. The problem that the debt ceiling matter will be lurking unresolved too at that same time, ready for Democrats to bring up again as a part of another big deal. Basically, it won’t get any easier for Trump to get his wall money by December.

Ms Finney is not the only descendant of Lee to have denounced the violence that broke out in Charlottesville and left 32-year-old Heather Heyer dead. A 20-year-old man has been charged with her murder. “There's no place for that,” Robert E Lee V told Newsweek of the violence. “There’s no place for that hate.” He added: “Our belief is that General Lee would not tolerate that sort of behaviour either. His first thing to do after the Civil War was to bring the Union back together, so we could become a more unified country.”

Bannon left the White House last Friday, after months of rumors that he was on shaky ground. In the aftermath, those around Bannon and at Breitbart signaled some kind of war with the Trump administration — which Marlow’s emails seem to confirm.

In the emails, Marlow raved about what he called a “conspiracy” involving Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump’s marriage, adding that Bannon had previously described them as “evil” and said no administration is more divided than Trump’s. Marlow said he would try to oust the two by Christmas.

In response to the hoax, Marlow tried to brush off the newsworthiness of the exchange, saying it was no more revealing than the pages of Breitbart.

“The obsession with Breitbart News is simply a result of our effectiveness. This time, an imposter deceitfully obtained and shared with CNN tongue-in-cheek emails that revealed that we feel Globalists present an existential threat to the agenda that got President Trump elected," Marlow told CNN. "If people want to know our thinking, they don't need to judge us on illicitly obtained comments that were intended to be private; they can simply read our front page.”

The emails suggest that Breitbart really is planning to go after the Trump administration following Bannon’s departure. Bannon, who returned to Breitbart News Friday, is deeply intertwined with Trumpism. It won’t be an easy divorce, and going against Trump’s inner circle could prove to be an extraordinarily risky move for Breitbart, which has grown in national name recognition largely because of Trump’s base.

A death row inmate in the US state of Missouri is about to be executed – despite new DNA evidence suggesting he is innocent. Marcellus Williams, now 48, was found guilty of the August 1998 murder of Lisha Gayle, 42, at home in St Louis. He was convicted and sentenced to death three years later. He is scheduled to be killed by lethal injection at 6pm on Tuesday (12am GMT).

However, new evidence suggests Williams may be innocent, as DNA found on the knife used to kill Ms Gayle does not match his. Prosecutors claim Williams was burgling his victim’s home when she discovered him and he stabbed her repeatedly. He has always maintained his innocence.

Williams’ lawyers have now asked the US Supreme Court to intervene in a desperate final bid to stop his execution. They are also appealing to Missouri’s Republican governor, Eric Greitens, to grant him clemency. His legal team says technology not available during the initial investigation shows DNA found on the murder weapon matches that of an unknown male and not Williams.

His lawyer, Kent Gipson, told Al Jazeera: "We petitioned the court to look at the new evidence on August 14th, and less than 24 hours later they decided based on the court files that the execution should go ahead anyway. This is unprecedented.

"There is no physical evidence, no eyewitnesses that directly connect Williams to the murder, the DNA on the weapon wasn't his, the bloody footprint at the murder scene wasn't from Williams' shoe and was a different size, and the hair fibres found weren't his. “It was someone else that killed Gayle, not Williams." Supporters have also argued that Williams’ lawyer during his initial trial was inundated with work and did not have enough time to prepare their case – something the attorney himself has admitted. He asked for the trial to be postponed but the court denied the request.

In 2015 the Missouri Supreme Court delayed Williams’ execution to allow for further DNA testing, but despite the new evidence it ruled last week that the killing should go ahead. Williams’ legal team is requesting a new hearing or for his sentence to be reduced to life in prison. The case will now be heard by US Supreme Court judge Neil Gorsuch, who was nominated by Donald Trump in January and serves as the judge for the 8th US Circuit Court of Appeals, which includes Missouri.

Missouri prosecutors say they have enough evidence to show Williams is guilty of murdering Ms Gayle, a former journalist who later moved into voluntary work. They say he sold her laptop after the killing and confessed to the murder to two different people.

These two witnesses formed the core of the case against Williams but his lawyers say the pair – one a cell mate and the other a crack-addicted prostitute who had a relationship with Williams - were motivated by a financial reward offered by Ms Gayle’s family to anyone with information leading to a conviction. Both reportedly received money after the trial.

Williams’ supporters also highlight the racial inequality in the US that means black defendants are much more likely to be sentenced to death than white defendants, especially if the victim is white, as Ms Gayle was. The pool of possible jurors in Williams’ trial included seven African Americas but all but one were blocked by the prosecution, leaving a jury that consisted of 11 white people and just one black one, despite almost half of St Louis inhabitants being black.

President Donald Trump reportedly told West Virginia Sen. Shelley Moore Capito that she could join him on Air Force One when he addressed boy scouts in her state only if she voted in favor of Senate Republicans' healthcare bill, The New York Times reported on Tuesday. Capito turned down the offer and said she wouldn't commit to voting for a bill whose text she hadn't yet seen, Republicans familiar with the conversation told The Times.

Trump's offer to Capito came as Republican senators were pulling out all the stops to salvage their healthcare overhaul effort in the Senate. At the time, Capito was one of several Republican senators who expressed doubts about the bill. After a series of earlier votes on different versions of the plan failed, Republican senators put together a last-ditch "skinny repeal" plan.

The vote on the "skinny repeal" ultimately failed — 49 voted in favor, including Capito, and 51 voted against it, with Arizona Sen. John McCain casting the decisive vote. The bill's failure came four days after Trump made the offer to Capito and gave a bizarre, freewheeling speech to a group of Boy Scouts in Capito's home state of West Virginia.

Trump's speech drew criticism for its increasingly political tilt, as the president took shots at the media, former President Barack Obama, and his 2016 general-election opponent, Hillary Clinton. Despite the mixed reaction the speech got, Trump told The Wall Street Journal that he had received a call "from the head of the Boy Scouts saying it was the greatest speech that was ever made to them." He continued: "And they were very thankful. So there was — there was no mix."

Boy Scouts of America officials pushed back on Trump's claim. According to Time magazine, the organization was "unaware of any call from national leadership placed to the White House" about Trump's speech. The Boy Scouts organization also distanced itself from Trump following his speech, apologizing to those who were "offended by the political rhetoric that was inserted into the Jamboree."
