I keep forgetting about ALBW, so that's another point for 2D Zelda.

There is like one great 3D Zelda (MM, haven't played BotW) while there are a fair more 2D ones (LttP, FSA, LA, OoS). Super Mario is my favorite series. There's just tons of high quality games from both types. I voted 3D Mario and 2D Zelda despite my Top 4 Super Mario games being 2D.

I really need to play more Castlevanias. I could see it potentially rising to third. I have both of the recent compilation collections as well as a bunch of the more modern ones through GWG, so it is just a matter of when.

Tunic is pretty much an open-exploration, linear progression kind of game. You can access a lot from the start but you won't be able to get far.

Howard - Yes

Howard was famously a massive reach for the Giants because of Eddv's strategy of absolutely taking a DE in the 1st, and that player ended up being Howard who had like a 2nd-3rd round grade. Howard didn't start immediately and sat behind R-Kal Truluck (RIP) in what ended up being a 15-1 Super Bowl-winning season for the team in which they had one of the best defensive seasons in our league's history. Howard succeeded him the following season in an enviable supporting cast and ran away with it, becoming one of the most prolific sackers in our history with a good amount of FFs and FRs. He ended up missing almost two seasons worth of games, so you have to wonder how close he could have come to Travis Johnson's career marks, but he certainly had a Hall of Fame career.

Wroten - Yes

I have long gushed about the stellar two-way play of Wroten. He was also never injured until the final two seasons, so he came very close to having started every possible game in his career. Wroten was one of two rookies to be named player of the year at their position. His lack of Pro Bowls can be attributed to Madden's underappreciation for players of Wroten's skillset who provide a great amount of tackles and sacks but rarely are among the league leaders at such stats among DL. He had a high impact on the Lions and Panthers though, with him forming a long-time tandem with fellow Hall of Famer LeKevin Smith as arguably the most important members on some steller Detroit defenses, including a Super Bowl-winning S6. Ever since they shipped him out in an ill-fated trade on draft day a couple seasons after their Super Bowl victory, the Lions defense hasn't been the same. Ditto goes to the Panthers defense in the two seasons when he was in Baltimore. He clearly has had a profound impact in the league.

Wright - Yes

Wright has always been a solid #2 DT in his career, playing alongside some greats in Sam Adams and John Mixon (he was the #1 DT ahead of Mixon for a little bit before Mixon overtook him), before ending his career as the clear #1 in Chicago. He's been a very good run defender and had some pass-rushing chops as evidenced by his 91 career sacks. He also had 24 career FFs+FRs, which is a great mark for a DT. He was even named DL of the Year, as well as four Pro Bowl trips. Why am I hesitating then? It might be because three of his 15 seasons provided more than a third of his career sacks and more than half of his career FFs+FRs. It's not like he has disappeared in the other 12 seasons. He still routinely provides 50+ tackles, but I'm looking at a bunch of seasons with 4 or fewer sacks and 0 or 1 FFs+FRs. I don't know, this is a bit of an iffy case for me even though I have been vocal about my bias toward DL. His peak seasons have been spread apart, but I guess I should give more weight to his DL of the Year award and where his career stats ended up. I will say yes.

Brown - Yes

Brown is a fascinating player. Like Hall of Famer Kamerion Wimbley, Brown began his career as a free agent for awhile before latching onto a team and against all rational thought soon found themselves the starter. From there Brown became just an all-around menace. He was a tackling machine and provided a great amount of sacks, INTs, and FFs+FRs. He clearly made the most of his opportunities. In spite of his limited time in the league, with injuries also plaguing him, he was a two-time Defensive Player of the Year. While my seasonal averages postings are inherently flawed, calculating per 16 games would just be too much of a hassle when this is already a pretty involving aspect of B8NFLL on my end. I'm sure though that his per-16 game averages though would be bonkers. Man those Vikings teams really had some insane defenders if they might get three Hall of Famers in two voting periods.

Bowman - No

It's not often that CBs will find themselves on the ballot, so I decided to add him to the list, but I just don't think that he has much of a case since CBs don't statistically stand out. While I acknowledge his importance and long tenure as a starter on excellent Ravens defenses, I would have liked to see more Pro Bowls and a slight uptick in INTs and/or FFs+FRs.

Because I'm the only one capable of understanding the context of these players careers, I acknowledge that for some it can be difficult to judge these players as a result. As always, here is my public ballot to possibly be a reference tool for whatever the participants ultimately decide.

Manson - No

Manson's impact in the first two seasons of his time with the Pioneers cannot be understated as he transformed the offense into a complete unit with his dual-threat nature en route to their only trips to the Super Bowl, including a win in S14. Outside of that, which did include him being an MVP finalist in S13, you have a pretty mixed bag. He's done well at being efficient and finding the end zone, but he had a weird tenure with the Raiders with a bunch of time-sharing with Romance Taylor to where he had two 1000 yard seasons in six years there, and one was 1015 yards. He spent two seasons in Washington, and one was where he played in a career low four games due to injury. In four seasons with the Pioneers, he had two fantastic seasons, an embarassing S15 where he started all 16 games and failed to eclipse 1000 yards, and a decent swan song with an 1185 yard season, albeit on his second-worst YPC in his career (4.0). His weird career trajectory and untimely injuries caused him to finally record 10k career rushing yards in his final season. This isn't like a Courtney Lewis situation where Lewis was handed a starting job late in his career and became one of the finest HBs when given the opportunity. Manson's effectiveness and production was just all over the place. While I'm thankful for what he did when I was in charge of the Pioneers, I think I would want to see more consistency or at least more standout seasons to vote yes for a player at a position that is bound to have Hall of Fame candidates maybe every season.

Jackson - Yes

His first four seasons in the league as a Titan were that of a promising dual-threat HB with the usual efficiency issues and modest TD totals. His final two seasons there were marred by injury, so Stan shipped him out to his division rival the Jaguars where he backed up and filled in for an injured Adrian Peterson in his most efficient and highest-scoring season yet. He then signed with the Raiders where he blossomed into one of the league's best runners and was a MVP-finalist multiple times there. He finished in the Top 5 all-time B8NFLL rushing list and had 94 total TDs. He's a definite Hall of Famer to me.

Hillis - No

Look, I was trying to decide some people to add toward the end, and I decided that since we will likely never have another FB candidate (multiple blocking ones I believe are, but I don't have the statistics to be able to convince others), I might as well add him in for positional variety/scarcity. Brian Leonard was the only offensive FB I found worthy of being a hall of famer, so Hillis is a no from me.

Jarrett - No

If there's a player to look to indicate how difficult it is for WRs to really set themselves apart from the pack, Jarrett might be the guy. Nobody outside of me would probably guess he would be in the Top 10 among active players in receptions and receiving yards, and it's possible I might have not considered it given I am aware of his injury history and that the Jets never had a passing offense among the league's most prolific. Still, even as a Day 1 starter, the fact he got to over 9000 yards despite more than two seasons worth of games due to injuries is an accomplishment of its own.

Guthrie - Yes

After a rookie season with 48 rec and 412 yards, Guthrie never dipped below either figure in the rest of his career, finishing with one of the best totals in both categories for a player at his position. He could remain high on the receiving yards by a TE leaderboard for the rest of B8NFLL now that I look at the career stats some more. He was also for a stretch the clear best receiving TE in the game, having won TE of the Year three years straight.

Olivea - Yes

The easiest yes from this group. Olivea's career block total could wind up still being the highest when this project is all said and done. While his 10.8 blocks per sack allowed in his career isn't among the upper echelon, it is still an excellent mark to sustain over 16 seasons while also misleading. He spent the final five seasons at G thanks to fellow OTs Matt Kalil and Andre Smith. There, Olivea put up 294 blocks vs 39 sacks, or 7.5 blocks per sack allowed, which is an elite figure for an interior OL. So he's actually been an elite OL at tackle and guard, and his OT block:sack ratio is 12.6, also an elite mark. The 10 Pro Bowls and his profound impact on the Broncos further solidify his no-brainer candidacy.

Jones - Yes

Nobody else is going to say yes, and I fully understand that. Why would I expect anyone to with no formal recognition and stats that don't really jump out? Well let me tell you why I am saying yes. He may officially be an OT, but he's been the Titans RG for the past six seasons. He began his career with the Giants as a 4th round pick and played sparingly as a backup OT. He looked promising, and the AI Orcas, then Lightning or maybe still Saints, plucked him during RFA. He had a good start with 124 blocks against 12 sacks but was riddled with injuries and poor play his final two seasons with 49 blocks against 12 sacks. All as an OT still. He then landed with the Titans and just beasted his final seven seasons. He had 60 blocks against 4 sacks in his lone season as the RT there, but after being displaced to RG because of signing Phil Trautwein, he put up 313 blocks against 32 sacks. I would have to assume that ratio is tops among all starting guards during that span. He had 50-70 blocks in five of those six seasons, so I have no doubt in my mind that he would have been named to the Pro Bowl 4-5 times had he officially been a G.

White - No

Ah shit, I forgot about White. I don't feel likedelving too much into his career, so I'm just going to say that he was underrated, as his career ratios suggest, but I never would consider him to be a hall of famer.

Pino - No
Merz - No

I'm tickled that Pino and Merz had long, successful careers in B8NFLL. I got this game around release in 2005, and sometime later I ended up buying on Ebay a memory card for the Xbox that came pre-loaded with four draft classes from NCAA Football 06 with players already renamed, some that were amusingly misspelled or shortened like D'Brick Ferguson. I have three franchises from that time where I took control of two teams (Ravens/Vikings and Seahawks/Bengals were two), but my main franchise was Dolphins/Jaguars. I, of course, had more of an attachment fro the former, and thus I paid closer attention to the AFC East. In that first draft in the second season, the Jets drafted both Pino and Merz for their team, and I sort of had a soft spot for them as they were stalwarts for the Jets for all seven seasons that I completed (I haven't touched them or the others since I began B8NFLL in 2013).

Anyway, Pino's Pro Bowl totals do raise some eyebrows, but ultimately he and Merz' career ratios aren't quite up to my standards for a Hall of Fame interior OL.

B8NFLL Hall of Fame Ballot

The following posts will contain 15 players and their career accomplishments up for immortalization. This is not a stacked group, so I had difficulty deciding who to include after awhile. It has been suggested that I don't stick to a 15-person ballot in the future, but we shall see.

This is a yes/no exercise, and there are no limits/minimum requirements to who you say yes to. Participation is of course voluntary, and you can PM them to me, DM me on Discord, post in the topic, discuss or whatever. You decide what your criteria for selection is. You can base it solely off of the context of B8NFLL, compare to real life stats, or some marriage of the two. Given how active participation in the league has its peaks and valleys, I will not have a specific target percentage of Yes votes that will ensure enshrinement. It will of course be north of 50% at the very least.

The Almighty Slash Line

All contracts will be presented to you via slash lines. It is imperative that you interpret and understand a slash line and its components, so here is an example to kick off my seasonal explanation:

3 / $9.00 mil / $1.80 mil

3 = length in seasons that the contract will last. All contracts will end up being between 1-7 seasons in length. There are some in-game and league-mandated limitations on length, but I will explain that rather soon.

$9.00 mil = Total salary that a player will earn over the life of the contract should the contract not be reworked while still under said contract or the player released.

Using this example, the player will receive $9.00 mil over three seasons, which gives him an average cap hit of $3.00 mil. His cap hit will not be $3.00 mil in each season though. This contract will see the player's cap hit rise each season, so his first year cap hit might be $2.42 mil, $2.90 mil for the second season, and $3.68 mil for the final season.

$1.80 mil = Portion of total salary that is guaranteed, aka signing bonus. For most, this is the hardest thing to grasp about the slash line and contracts in general. The NFL does not have fully guaranteed contracts, which means that what a player signs for might not actually be what they receive in the end. The team that signs a player to a contract will always be on the hook for the final figure in a slash line, with the only exception being if a player retires while under contract.

Using this example, the player might have a cap hit of $2.42, $2.90, and $3.68 mil in the first, second, and third seasons. However, his signing bonus is stretched out evenly across every season. The annual bonus in this contract would be $600k ($1.80 mil / 3 years). The annual bonus is a feature on the team financial sheet, so that info will always be available to you.

Now, if you trade or release a player under contract with guaranteed money, you will receive a reduction in your salary cap space, aka cap penalty, that is equal to their annual bonus x the years remaining on their contract. Using this example once again, let's say the player is released after the first season. That would leave him with $1.20 mil left in guaranteed money ($600k annual bonus x 2 years left on contract). The team that signed him to that contract would then be issued a cap penalty the following offseason to the tune of $1.20 mil.

If that player would be traded instead, the original team would receive the same cap penalty, but the new team would have a discounted contract. Because the original team is always on the hook for the guaranteed money, the $1.20 mil that is still owed that player is taken out of the contract for the new team. If the cap hits for years 2 and 3 were originally $2.90 and $3.68 mil and the annual bonus was $600k, then the new cap hits for the new team would be $2.30 and $3.08 mil. The new team could then release or trade the player at any time without financial repercussions since the contract no longer had any guaranteed money attached.

Finally, in case someone doesn't know, mil = dollars in millions while k = dollars in thousands.

What happens if you idle during the offseason?

For starters, anyone is free to ask me for advice at any point, and if real life requires you to take a small break at some point that prevents you from doing an event or more, feel free to ask me to temporarily take over your team, and I will make decisions as if I were in charge of your team. However, if the worst comes to pass, I have safety nets in place to protect user teams.

Should you idle during Restricted Free Agency, I will sign a random two players, if applicable, to random tender levels. I will not participate in the second phase on behalf of your team, and should any of your RFAs be signed by other players during that phase, I will default to not matching the deal in the third and final phase.

Should you idle during Unrestricted Free Agency, I officially sign a random half of your players, rounding up, to the contracts that they ask for.

Should you idle during the draft, I will draft as if I were in charge of your team.

Should you idle during free agency, this is unavoidably the most harsh of the four offseason events. I will not sign any players for you and the AI will fill the holes on your behalf at the conclusion of free agency.

Offseason in a Nutshell

There are four major events during the offseason. They will be explained in full detail when the time comes, but here they are:

1. Restricted Free Agency
2. Unrestricted Free Agents
3. NFL Draft + Signing Rookies
4. Free Agency

Restricted Free Agency - This is the most complex of the four, yet it is the one that has the lowest activity. A small sub-section of players whose contracts run out are considered restricted free agents. These players can, but do not have to, be signed by their original teams to a 1 year contract at one of three fixed amounts. Those that do sign can then be offered contracts by any of the other 31 teams to multiyear deals. Any team who has a player sign a contract with another team will then have the opportunity to match said contract or let them sign with another team and receive NFL Draft pick compensation.

Unrestricted Free Agents - Any player with an expired contract who was not considered a restricted free agent is thus an unrestricted free agent. Teams then can elect to re-sign the remaining players or let them enter the free agent market. Unlike the previous event, the other 31 teams cannot do anything to you, so you are free to operate without outside pressure. There are a few more wrinkles, but it is pretty straightforward.

NFL Draft + Signing Rookies - This is an event where all 32 teams can select college football players to join their team. Each team normally has seven draft picks, one for each of the seven rounds of the draft. The order that a team selects is based on their record and playoff performance, if applicable, from the season before. Earlier in the topic, I mentioned this season's draft order, and all teams are free to trade draft picks. After the draft, a separate period of time is devoted to signing all the players that a team drafted.

Free Agency - All players not signed or re-signed in the previous three events enter the free agent pool, and this is the time that every team is able to bid on the services of those without a team (aka free agents).
