Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said Wednesday that his decision to block former President Obama's Supreme Court pick to succeed the late Justice Antonin Scalia in 2016 led to the Roe v. Wade getting overturned. "Its the single-most consequential decision Ive made in my public career," McConnell said in Kentucky on Wednesday, per Bloomberg. The senator also called the Supreme Court's opinion "a huge step in the right direction." McConnell said that refusing to consider Merrick Garland's nomination led to President Trump putting Justice Neil Gorsuch on the bench, the first of the three Trump appointees that gave the Supreme Court a 6-3 conservative majority. All of the justices appointed by Trump Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett joined the court's opinion, written by Justice Samuel Alito, in overturning Roe. McConnell, when Garland was nominated, directed Senate Republicans to not consider Obama's pick. He then expanded the so-called "nuclear option" to get rid of the filibuster to confirm Supreme Court nominees in 2018.

TopicA "coin flip": Nearly half of U.S. murders go unsolved as cases rise

Police called Denita Williams in April and gave her the address of a gas station in their town of Jackson, Mississippi and asked how long it would take for her to get there. "When I pulled up, all I see is this crime tape," Williams told CBS News. Her son, Kenland Thompson, Jr., was shot and killed while putting air in his tires. He was 20 years old. "The coroner had already taken his body," she said. "He was already gone." Three months later, no one has been arrested for the murder of Kenland Thompson, Jr. "I gave them names," Williams said, describing how she told police she would help them investigate the case herself. "I felt like I was going crazy, giving them so much. They're not doing their job." Across a nation that is already in the grips of a rise in violent crime, murders are going unsolved at a historic pace, a CBS News investigation has found. A review of FBI statistics shows that the murder clearance rate the share of cases each year that are solved, meaning police make an arrest or close the case due to other reasons has fallen to its lowest point in more than half a century.

"It's a 50-50 coin flip," says Thomas Hargrove, who runs the Murder Accountability Project, which tracks unsolved murders nationwide. "It's never been this bad. During the last seven months of 2020, most murders went unsolved. That's never happened before in America." Police are far less likely to solve a murder when the victim is Black or Hispanic, according to CBS News' analysis. In 2020, the murders of White victims were about 30% more likely to be solved than in cases with Hispanic victims, and about 50% more than when the victims were Black, the data show. In dozens of interviews across the country, police and criminal justice experts have offered a range of explanations for these trends. Some factors are evident when visiting communities such as Jackson, Mississippi, which has suffered from one of the nation's highest murder rates. In that city of about 160,000 people, the police department responded to 153 murders in the past year but has just eight homicide detectives to work that caseload. FBI guidelines suggest homicide detectives should be covering no more than five cases at a time. Police Chief James Davis said his department needs more of everything to keep up with the violence. "The whole system is backlogged," Davis said. "I could use more police officers. I could use more homicide detectives, but if the state is backed up, the court is backed up, we will still have the same problem by developing these cases that we're already doing." Police are also contending with a breakdown in trust between their officers and the communities they serve, a result of decades of tensions that spilled over during high-profile cases of police misconduct in recent years. That has made it harder for police to receive tips or obtain help from witnesses, said Danielle Outlaw, the commissioner of the Philadelphia Police Department. Outlaw told CBS News there is a history of "systemic inequities that contribute to the mistrust" in many communities most affected by crime.

Boris Johnson has claimed that Vladimir Putin would not have invaded Ukraine if he was a woman and believes that the war is a perfect example of toxic masculinity. In an interview with German media following the G7 summit in Schloss Elmau, the prime minister cited the Russian presidents gender as a contributory factor to the conflict. Johnson told broadcaster ZDF: If Putin was a woman, which he obviously isnt, if he were, I really dont think he would have embarked on a crazy, macho war of invasion and violence in the way that he has. If you want a perfect example of toxic masculinity, its what he is doing in Ukraine.

https://www.cnn.com/2022/06/29/india/india-udaipur-hindu-muslim-killing-intl-hnk/index.html

Religious tensions are flaring in India following the killing of a Hindu man allegedly by two Muslim assailants as authorities attempt to stop video of the brutal attack from circulating online. Officials in the western city of Udaipur, Rajasthan state, announced a curfew and blocked internet access after videos of the incident went viral on social media, triggering mass outrage across the country. In one video, two men can be seen beginning to attack the victim. In another, two Muslim men appear to confess to the crime and claim to have "decapitated" the Hindu man. However, police in the state told CNN Wednesday the victim had deep cuts all over his body, including slashes on his neck, but that he had not been beheaded. India's Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday said it had directed the National Investigation Agency -- the country's main anti-terrorism task force -- to investigate the case. "The involvement of any organisation and international links will be thoroughly investigated," it said on Twitter. The two suspects allegedly killed the victim, a tailor, after a post appeared on his social media account in favor of the now suspended national spokesperson for India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Nupur Sharma, who made derogatory comments about Islam's Prophet Mohammed, Rajasthan police official Hawa Singh Ghumaria told CNN Wednesday. The victim was arrested on June 12 for allegedly "inflaming religious sentiments" and had since been released on bail, Ghumaria said. The two suspects have been arrested and an investigation is underway, the state's Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, wrote on Twitter on Tuesday. Authorities in the state have responded by deploying more than 600 policemen to the area.

"This incident is very shameful," Ghumaria said during a news conference Tuesday, before urging the public not to watch the videos and appealing for calm. "There will be tension. There always is after such an incident, but it is all under control," he said. The killing has reignited the flames of an already volatile situation between India's Hindu majority and its minority Muslim community, that make up about 14% of the country's 1.3 billion population. Asaduddin Owaisi, a lawmaker and president of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen political party, condemned the killing and demanded the "strictest possible action" against the suspects. "There can be no justification for it," he wrote on Twitter Tuesday. "Our party's consistent stand is to oppose such violence. No one can take the law into their own hands." Leader of the opposition Congress party Rahul Gandhi said he was "deeply shocked" by the incident. "Brutality in the name of religion cannot be tolerated," he wrote on Twitter. "We have to come together to defeat hatred. I appeal to everyone to please maintain peace and brotherhood." Hindu-Muslim tensions have remained a constant throughout India's modern history, occasionally erupting into violence, but analysts and activists say relations have worsened since Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his BJP rose to power with a Hindu-nationalist agenda in 2014. Since then, the ruling party has been repeatedly accused by rights groups, activists and opposition parties of stirring anti-Muslim sentiment. The BJP said in a statement on its website earlier this month that the party respected all religions. "The BJP strongly denounces insult of any religious personalities of any religion," it said. Earlier this month, India scrambled to contain the diplomatic fallout as at least 15 Muslim-majority countries condemned Sharma's remarks about the Prophet Mohammed. The incident sparked uproar among India's key Arab trading partners and calls from around the Gulf to boycott Indian goods.

https://www.business-standard.com/article/international/iran-argentina-apply-to-join-brics-bloc-after-recent-summit-report-122062800935_1.html

Iran and Argentina have applied to join the BRICS mechanism, the Russian state media reported, days after a summit of the five-nation bloc during which the leaders agreed to continue to discuss the possibility of admitting new countries to the grouping on the basis of "full consultation and consensus." Argentina and Iran have applied for joining BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa), Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova was quoted as saying by the state-run Tass news agency. It reported that Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said on Monday that Tehran has applied for BRICS membership. Tehran filed the application for accession to the BRICS, he said. The diplomat expressed hope that "Iran will be able to contribute to the BRICS' operation and benefit the organisation." Argentina's President Alberto Fernandez said at a BRICS+ meeting last week that his country wants to become a full member of the association, the Tass report said.

Ahead of the summit, Saudi Arabia too expressed interest to join the grouping, according to reports. The issue of expansion of the BRICS bloc was figured in the June 23 virtual summit hosted by China, which is this year's chair. The declaration issued at the end of the summit said the leaders will continue to discuss the possibility of admitting new countries to the five-nation grouping on the basis of "full consultation and consensus." Asked for his reaction at a media briefing here on Tuesday about Iran and Argentina applying to join BRICS, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said many countries have expressed their interest to join the five-member bloc of emerging markets. "BRICS countries agreed that it is important to step up cooperation with other emerging markets and developing countries to improve the representativeness of the BRICS mechanism and make it loudly heard on major international issues so that we can better rise up to challenges and uphold the interests of emerging markets and developing counties," Zhao said. "We have noted that many countries including Iran and Argentina have expressed their willingness to join the BRICS family. As the chair of the BRICS this year China actively supports BRICS countries to start the membership expansion process to expand BRICS Plus cooperation," he said. Zhao said that at the 14th summit held on June 23 the BRICS leader made a unanimous voice on the expansion of the BRICS mechanism and they supported discussion, standards and procedure for the expansion.

https://nypost.com/2022/06/29/democrats-strike-out-as-trio-of-preferred-candidates-in-colorado-gop-races-lose/

The Democrats unorthodox strategy of pushing conservative and far-right Republican primary candidates in Colorado in order to face potentially weaker opponents in November fell flat on Tuesday. Three GOP candidates who were boosted by funding from Democratic campaign groups all lost their races in The Rocky Mountain State, which is serving as a testing ground for the Democrats move to favor candidates that they believe would repulse moderate or independent voters and stem forecasted losses for the party in the midterm elections. Rep. Ron Hanks lost the GOP Senate primary to moderate Colorado businessman Joe ODea. Former state Rep. Lori Saine lost to Sen. Barbara Kirkmeyer in the states new 8th Congressional district. And Greg Lopez was defeated by businesswoman Heidi Ganahl in the GOP gubernatorial primary.

The Democratic Colorado Super PAC has dropped at least $2.5 million on the GOP Senate primary, airing ads designed to promote Hanks candidacy by calling him too conservative for Colorado, highlighting his positions on abortion and whether Joe Biden won the 2020 election. As for Lopez, the Democratic Governors Association ran its own paid content about the far-right candidate, calling him too conservative, according to the Denver Post. The group in a statement told the Denver Post Lopez was too extreme and out-of-touch but would not answer questions why they would attempt to help Lopez in the short term. Finally, in the 8th House race, Saine got financial backing from House Speaker Nancy Pelosis PAC. Kirkmeyer got 40% of the vote while Saine only received 19.6% with 97% of the votes tallied.

A drag artist has received death threats after Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene retweeted a photo of them in a revealing outfit and wrongly claimed they wore it to a family-friendly event. Holly Hazmat, a Chicago-based drag performer headlined the Skokie, Illinois annual pride event over the weekend but started receiving negative attention on Twitter after the conservative account Libs of TikTok tweeted a photo of Hazmat at another event and said they would be performing at the family-friendly one. "llinois Park is having a 'family-friendly' pride event featuring a drag performance by this drag queen. @SkokieParks receives millions in funding," the account tweeted. The photo used by Libs of TikTok showed Hazmat in a revealing outfit and suggested that the performer would be wearing it in front of children. Libs of TikTok is influential among American conservatives and known for spreading anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment on the platform.

The tweet was subsequently shared by Greene who added: "This should be illegal." Hazmat responded to say: "This isn't real. You have got to be joking me. @RepMTG @libsoftiktok this is not how I dress for all ages shows." Following the posts by Libs of TikTok and Greene, Hazmat has been "bombarded by MASS death threats, hate comments, and name calling. I even had an individual online post a video stating he was on his way to the event to 'expose this madness.'" However, they still went to the event as planned and said their safety was ensured by the security present. "I wasn't going to let Rep. Marjorie Taylor or anyone diminish my PRIDE," Hazmat said. "I still went to the event, the security team all had my back, and we had a FUN and FABULOUS time. "The Chicago drag community came together and protected me the ENTIRE day. So many words of love and affirmation it really made a performer's heart so warm. "Thought I would share and get the word out there that no matter what anyone says to you, NEVER let anyone diminish the light you have inside of you! It's so much more important to be PROUD of you, express what you have to offer the world, and live FIERCELY." Earlier this month, Greene baselessly claimed that she believes straight people face extinction within 150 years. "Probably in about four or five generations, no one will be straight anymore," Greene said during a livestream broadcast on social media. "Everyone will be either gay or trans or nonconforming or whatever the list of 50 or 60 different options there are."

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2022/06/28/tennessee-abortion-ban-trigger-law-roe/7757761001/

A federal court on Tuesday said Tennessee could move forward with its ban on abortion as early as six weeks into pregnancy to take effect, citing the Supreme Courts decision overturning the landmark Roe v. Wade abortion rights case. The decision from the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday vacated a lower court's injunction that blocked the ban from going into effect. GOP supermajorities in the Legislature passed the law in 2020 with Republican Gov. Bill Lees backing, and it was almost immediately blocked in federal court. The Tuesday decision comes before Tennessees other abortion ban, the so-called trigger ban, is expected to restrict abortion almost entirely by mid-August, according to a newly detailed legal interpretation by the state attorney general Tuesday. Both measures would make performing an abortion a felony and subject doctors to up to 15 years in prison. The Tennessee Attorney General's office argued the state "has a valid interest in protecting the lives of unborn Tennesseans," when it asked for a rapid ruling.

Experts have noted that at six weeks, most women dont know theyre pregnant. Ashley Coffield, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Tennessee and North Mississippi, said in response to the ruling, "abortion bans rob people of their ability to make the decisions that are best for themselves, their lives, and their futures." "It is unconscionable that Tennesseans will lose access to abortion in their communities because of this decision," Coffield said in a statement. "Planned Parenthood remains committed to helping people in Tennessee and Mississippi access abortions outside our state, and our doors are open for non-judgmental information, resources, and financial and logistical support." The ruling, and the implementation of Tennessee's trigger law , appears poised to muddy an already complicated legal and health care landscape in the wake of Roe's fall. The state is now expected to enforce two different abortion laws in less than one month. The six-week ban will be in place for just a few weeks before a near-total abortion ban, signed into law in 2019, is expected to go into effect.

Taraji P. Henson says that amid the Supreme Courts overturning of Roe v. Wade, firearms in the United States have more rights than women. Its about damn time we talk about the fact that guns have more rights than a woman, the Empire star said as she delivered a monologue Sunday as host of the BET Awards in Los Angeles. Its a sad day in America, Henson, 51, said. A weapon that can take lives has more power than a woman who can give life, if she chooses to, the Hidden Figures actor told the audience. On Thursday, the Supreme Court struck down a New York state law that made it difficult to obtain a permit to carry a handgun outside the home, marking a major expansion of gun rights. The following day, the Supreme Court reversed the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, which had established the constitutional right to an abortion.

Henson wasnt the only performer who spoke out against the Roe v. Wade decision at BETs annual awards ceremony. Janelle Mone, one of the nights presenters, took to the stage to denounce the ruling. The Make me Feel singer praised artists making art on our own terms, owning our truth and expressing ourselves freely and unapologetically in a world that tries to control and police our bodies, my body, and our decision, my decisions. Fuck you, Supreme Court, Mone said to cheers, as she raised her middle finger.

https://nypost.com/2022/06/27/biden-admin-wont-allow-abortions-on-federal-land-kamala-harris/

Vice President Kamala Harris on Monday said that the Biden administration wasnt looking into allowing abortions to be performed on federal land in states that restrict the procedure following the Supreme Courts Friday decision reversing Roe v. Wade. The idea was put forward Friday by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and echoed Sunday by Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) after the court rescinded federal abortion rights and allowed states to set their own policies. Harris is the first woman to hold her post, but she faced criticism from abortion rights advocates who said she seemed aloof by releasing a photo of herself watching cable news coverage of the court ruling from Air Force Two. CNN reporter Dana Bash asked Harris in an interview Monday, Can the administration expand abortion access or abortion services on federal land meaning provide the access on federal land that might be in around states that ban abortion? I think that what is most important right now is that we ensure that the restrictions that the states are trying to put up that would prohibit a woman from exercising what we still maintain is her right, that we do everything we can to empower women to not only seek but to receive the care where it is available, Harris said.

Is federal land one of those options? Bash pressed. I mean, its not right now what we are discussing, Harris said, before turning the conversation toward the November midterm elections, which Republicans have been favored to win due to public frustration at high inflation and record gas prices. I will say that when I think about what is happening in terms of the states, we have to also recognize, Dana, that we are 130 odd days away from an election, which is going to include Senate races right part of the issue here is that the court has acted and now Congress needs to act, Harris said. Ocasio-Cortez proposed using federal land to create islands of abortion access in restrictive states while speaking to protesters on the night of the ruling in New York Citys Union Square. There are also actions at President Bidens disposal that he can mobilize, AOC said. Ill start with the babiest of the babiest of the baby steps: Open abortion clinics on federal lands in red states right now. Right now.

https://nypost.com/2022/06/27/biden-aide-interrupts-as-macron-spills-bad-news-about-oil-crisis/

President Bidens national security adviser Jake Sullivan on Monday stepped in to interrupt French President Emmanuel Macron as he broke bad news to Biden with journalists feet away about attempts to get Arab nations to produce more oil to lower record gas prices. Careful. Maybe we should just step inside because of the cameras, Sullivan said, motioning to journalists covering the G-7 summit in Germany. Its unclear if Sullivan was concerned about any particular nugget of news leaking to journalists, but some of Macrons words were clearly audible. I had a call with MBZ, Macron told Biden, referring to the leader of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan. He told me two things. Im at a maximum, maximum [production capacity]. This is what he claims And then he said [the] Saudis can increase by 150 [thousands barrels per day]. Maybe a little bit more, but they dont have huge capacities before six months time.

That news means that Bidens visit to Saudi Arabia next month may fail to woo the oil-rich Arab states to help alleviate a spike in gas prices associated with Russias four-month-old invasion of Ukraine. High gas prices of about $5 per gallon are driving down public approval of Bidens performance while contributing to the worst inflation since 1981. Reuters reported that Saudi Arabia and the UAE have been perceived as the only two countries in producer group the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and the world which still have some spare capacity and could help increase global deliveries.

https://nypost.com/2022/06/27/portland-pregnancy-center-mistakenly-attacked-by-pro-abortion-rights-militants/

Pro-abortion-rights militants mistakenly attacked a pregnancy assistance center in Portland after Roe v. Wade was overturned, upset staffers said Monday. Mother and Child Education Center executive director Maura White, a self-described pro-choice liberal, told Fox News that her Oregon nonprofit helps young mothers and babies in need and has no official stand on the contentious abortion-rights issue roiling the nation. My organization, we are nonprofit, and we help moms, families, kids in need, babies from zero to 5 years old, she said. Were just there to help people. And so they mistakenly thought that we were out here doing anti-abortion and everything. The violence was horrible. The nonprofit suffered at least $10,000 in damage after protesters smashed windows and spray-painted slogans Saturday, White said. She said local police warned her in advance of potential attacks and were sympathetic after the destruction took place. But she noted that local cops have become notably less vigilant when it comes to crime in the wake of the defund the police sentiment in the area. I do feel that the defund the police movement has definitely impacted their ability to be more proactive in the street, she said. Its really unfortunate.

White, a Democrat, said she supports the right to protest but denounced the wave of unrest that has rocked Portland in the wake of the US Supreme Court decision to reverse Roe v. Wade, which federally guaranteed a womans right to an abortion. Free speech is not smashing in the very businesses that are helping people, that are helping children, she said. White said her center assists those who have already decided to bear their children. Theyve already made that choice, she said, adding that her organization has been under attack on social media. They dont understand what we do. The nonprofit helps new mothers struggling with being able to afford diapers, strollers and other basic necessities. They love their kids, she said. Were just helping them be the best parents they can be. While insurance will help pay for some of the damage, White said she has a high deductible and will inevitably have to foot some of the costs. Its so not fair, she said.

The Supreme Court Monday issued a ruling in favor of a Washington state football coach who sought to kneel and pray on the field after games. The court ruled 6-3 along ideological lines that former high school football coach Joe Kennedys prayer was protected under the first amendment. The Constitution and the best of our traditions counsel mutual respect and tolerance, not censorship and suppression, for religious and nonreligious views alike, Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote in the majority opinion. The ruling is the latest of several from the court in favor of religious plaintiffs. The court ruled last week that the state of Maine cannot exclude religious schools from a public program offering tuition aid to private school students, a move that will make it easier for religious institutions to receive taxpayer money.

"I'm wondering how the hell this happened," Sapp said, "and the tape didn't get out, right?"

As we reported, Kaepernick tried out for Vegas in late May ... but the Raiders have been tight-lipped about the workout ever since, with head coach Josh McDaniels declining to get into specifics of how it all went. Kaepernick's agent, Jeff Nalley, denied Sapp's claims in a text message to Pro Football Talk on Sunday ... saying he was told the workout was actually a success. "I guess Warren didnt talk to the General Manager or the head coach," Nalley said. "I spoke to the G.M. [Dave Zieger] several times and he said they all thought Kap was in great shape and threw the ball really well and encouraged any team to call him about the workout and he would tell them the same." Nalley continued, "I'm surprised Warren would say that, because it's not true and you would think he would want Kap on a team." Kaepernick, who last played in the NFL in the 2016 season, remains a free agent ... though the Raiders' current starting quarterback, Derek Carr, told media members earlier this month he would welcome the QB's signing.

The catfish trend is making its way around social media and it doesnt seem to be stopping anytime soon. Kenidi McCray jumped at the chance to join the trend on TikTok showing off some extreme results. Her video was captioned: I really catfished him. She shows off her glam make-up, saying: What my boyfriend gets 0.07% of the time. But Kenidi says her reality is very different to her sensational look. The video then jumps to Kenidi dressed in baggy, over-sized clothes with no make-up and disheveled hair. Kenidi is almost unrecognizable with many of her followers claiming that the glam picture is another person entirely. Her video sent TikTok into a frenzy with many people asking for the truth so Kenidi planned to give it to them. The most liked comment on her post said: Aint no way this is the same person. To which she replied: No possible way that this would be the same, not a chance. Tutorial coming tomo (tomorrow)!! But they werent the only one to be shocked by Kenidis revelation.

A second wrote: I refuse to believe this is same person. Another said: My ex literally got mad at me for this. And I was like uhh you dont take me anywhere to get ready for. One user commented: This is very confusing to me how do people manage to do this. Kenidi replied: Witchcraft.

Rudy Giuliani was attacked by a worker at a ShopRite on Staten Island on Sunday while campaigning for his son, leaving the 78-year-old former New York City mayor shaken, witnesses and law-enforcement sources said. Giuliani told The Post he almost went down when he was hit but regained his composure even as his attacker kept cursing at him. My dad is tough as nails, Giulianis gubernatorial-candidate son, Andrew Giuliani, said. Witness Rita Rugova-Johnson told The Post she was stunned during the attack at the supermarket on Veterans Road. I was shoulder-to-shoulder with Rudy inside ShopRite, Rugova-Johnson said. Were talking, and all of a sudden an employee came out of nowhere and open-handedly slapped him in the back and said, Hey, whats up scumbag? [The attacker] was on duty at the time, the witness said. The cops arrested him. Sources said police took the assailant into custody at the store. The suspect, a 39-year-old from Staten Island, will be charged with second-degree assault involving a person over age 65, law-enforcement sources said. The man has no prior arrests, sources said.

Hes doing fine, Andrew later said of his father. But its a sad day when New Yorkers greatest crime fighter, Americas Mayor, is attacked. I blame the left-wing for encouraging violence. This is crazy. Rudy Giuliani, also a lawyer for former President Donald Trump, was campaigning for his son, including by posing for photos, at the time of the attack, said his partner, Dr. Maria Ryan, to The Post.

https://nypost.com/2022/06/26/south-dakota-will-prosecute-abortion-docs-and-restrict-access-to-pills-gov-noem/

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem on Sunday said her state will prosecute doctors who perform abortions and will work to restrict womens access to abortion pills. South Dakota is among 10 states with trigger laws that declared abortion a criminal offense immediately upon the US Supreme Courts decision Friday to strike down the 1973 Roe v. Wade case that established a womens right to have the procedure. Noem, a Republican, said South Dakota will prosecute doctors, not women, who violate its law. Well continue to have those debates on how we can support these mothers and what it means to really make sure we are not prosecuting mothers ever in a situation like this, Noem said on CBS News Face the Nation. [Prosecution] will always be focused toward those doctors who knowingly break the law to perform abortions in our state. The Supreme Court ruling in a Mississippi case banning abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy struck down Roe v. Wade, allowing individual states to prohibit the practice or put restrictions on it.

In South Dakota, all abortions are illegal except if deemed necessary to save the mothers life. There are no other exceptions, including for rape or incest. CBSs Margaret Brennan asked Noem if South Dakota also plans to restrict access to abortion pills, pointing out that Attorney General Merrick Garland warned states about preventing women from receiving the medication, which has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Noem said South Dakotas state legislature doesnt believe that such telemedicine abortion should be available because it is a dangerous situation for those individuals without being medically supervised by a physician. Brennan asked if South Dakota would overrule the FDA and decide which drugs state residents can receive. Many of those decisions are made at the state level, they absolutely are. Thats what states do, Noem said.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/juul-fda-e-cigarette-ban-in-us/

A federal court on Friday granted a request by Juul Labs to temporarily block an order by the Food and Drug Administration to stop selling its electronic cigarettes in the U.S. The e-cigarette maker had asked the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit to stay what it calls an "extraordinary and unlawful action" by the FDA that would require it to immediately halt its business. The company, which is partly owned by tobacco giant Altria, filed an emergency motion with the appeals court as it prepares to appeal the FDA's decision. The FDA said Thursday that Juul must stop selling its vaping device and its tobacco and menthol flavored cartridges. The action was part of a sweeping effort by the agency to bring scientific scrutiny to the multibillion-dollar vaping industry after years of regulatory delays.

Marketed as an alternative for smokers trying to kick the habit, e-cigarettes have helped some adults do exactly that. However, the products have also ushered in an epidemic of youth vaping. Studies have reached conflicting results about whether vaping truly helps smokers quit, and efforts by the FDA to rule on vaping products and their claims were repeatedly slowed by industry lobbying and competing political interests, the Associated Press reported. The vaping issue took on new urgency in 2018 when Juul's high-nicotine, fruity-flavored cartridges became a nationwide craze among middle and high school students. In 2020, the FDA limited flavors in small vaping devices to just tobacco and menthol. Separately, Congress raised the purchase age for all tobacco and vaping products to 21. The company said in its Friday court filing that it submitted a 125,000-page application to the FDA nearly two years ago. It said the application included several studies to evaluate the health risks among Juul users. Juul said that the FDA cannot argue that there was a "critical and urgent public interest" in immediately removing its products from the market when the agency allowed them to be sold during its review. The company noted that the FDA denied its application while authorizing those submitted by competitors with similar products. The FDA has OK'd e-cigarettes from R.J. Reynolds, Logic and other companies, while rejecting many others.

https://www.cnbc.com/2022/06/24/roe-v-wade-decision-trump-takes-credit-for-supreme-court-abortion-ruling.html

Former President Donald Trump called Fridays Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade the biggest WIN for LIFE in a generation and gave himself credit for the outcome in the controversial decision to undo federal abortion rights. Trump nominated three of the five conservative Supreme Court justices who voted to overturn Roe v. Wade: Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett. That trio provided the margin of victory in the decision, which revoked the constitutional right to abortion that had existed for nearly a half-century. Justice Samuel Alito wrote the majority opinion in the case, which Justice Clarence Thomas also joined in support. Trump, in a statement, said Fridays ruling and other recent court decisions were only made possible because I delivered everything as promised, including nominating and getting three highly respected and strong Constitutionalists confirmed to the United States Supreme Court.

It was my great honor to do so! Trump said. Coney Barrett was confirmed to the Supreme Court just about a week before the 2020 presidential election that Trump eventually lost. Her nomination by Trump was rushed through the Senate process after the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, as Republicans feared they would not have the votes in that chamber to confirm her after the election. Kavanaughs nomination in 2018 ran into serious trouble after a woman claimed that he and a high school classmate of his drunkenly sexually assaulted her in the 1980s. Kavanaugh denied her allegations, and he was narrowly confirmed by the Senate. Gorsuchs nomination by Trump in 2017 came after then-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell a year earlier refused to hold confirmation hearings on then-President Barack Obamas pick for the Supreme Court after the death of conservative Justice Antonin Scalia. Obama had nominated Merrick Garland, who currently is serving as U.S. attorney general. Trump, in his statement, said he did not cave to the Radical Left Democrats, their partners in the Fake News Media, or the RINOs [Republicans in Name Only] who are likewise the true, but silent, enemy of the people. These major Victories prove that even though the Radical Left is doing everything in their power to destroy our Country, your Rights are being protected, the Country is being defended, and there is still hope and time to Save America! I will never stop fighting for the Great People of our Nation! Trump said.

https://gothamist.com/news/nyc-rent-board-approves-steepest-hikes-since-bloomberg-era

Roughly 2.4 million New York City tenants will face the biggest rent hikes theyve seen in nearly a decade after the Rent Guidelines Board approved the increases in a split vote Tuesday night at Cooper Union. The panel of nine mayoral appointees which determines rent adjustments for approximately one million rent-stabilized apartments voted 5 to 4 to increase rents by 3.25% for one-year leases, and 5% for two-year leases. The rates fell within the middle of ranges approved by the board last month and represent the biggest jump in stabilized rents since Mike Bloomberg was mayor. Landlords had pushed for even steeper increases, arguing that building maintenance and insurance costs have surged. And after eight years of small or no increases under former Mayor Bill de Blasio, owners say they can no longer afford to keep their buildings in good repair. "It's not in pace with what it should have been," said Brian Liff, the owner of a single brownstone in Harlem, after the vote. "It's just scratching the surface on what the statistics dictate actually should have been." Tenant groups and advocates called for rent freezes or even rollbacks at a series of public hearings and rallies leading up to Tuesday's vote, pointing to the rising cost of living in New York City, and already subpar building conditions.

"We are facing a recession, we are still in a pandemic, we cannot afford 4 to 6% increases in our rent," said Joanne Grell with the group Community Action for Safe Apartments, prior to the vote. "Now is not the time to destroy families, to increase homelessness and to get people in communities out of their homes." After the proceeding, tenants told Gothamist they fear they'll be forced out of their homes and ultimately out of the city. "There are some people who might not be able to stay in their apartments at all," said Sarah Lazur, a rent-stabilized tenant in Crown Heights. "I don't know where they can go it's not like there's somewhere cheaper to go because the unstabilized rents have been going up massively." The citys median rent on unregulated apartments is up 28 percent in the last year, to $3,200, according to StreetEasy. The good cause eviction bill which would have given market rate tenants similar rights to rent-stabilized ones, and protected against the kind of steep increases currently affecting many tenants failed to pass through the state Legislature this year.

Its time to free the nip. A-list babes are ditching lingerie as part of the latest fashion statement, in which baring some or a lot of cleavage becomes trendy once again. Julia Fox, Dua Lipa and Kristen Stewart are amongst the ladies bearing it all for the paparazzi recently, being snapped while living fully liberated. Theyre opting for plunging necklines, barely there crop tops, unbuttoned suit jackets and even totally sheer numbers, stripping down as the season heats up. They may be following actress Gillian Andersons lead, who last year vowed to never wear a bra again. I dont care if my breasts reach my belly button. Im not wearing a bra, its just too fucking uncomfortable, the Sex Education actress said in an Instagram Live clip.

Weve all heard the tale that bras supposedly ward off sagging with age, but the theory isnt backed by experts. Wearing a bra doesnt affect the risk of breast sagging, or what is called breast ptosis, breast health specialist Cassann Blake, MD, told the Cleveland Clinic, adding that bras wont change the shape either. Its OK to do whatever is comfortable for you. If not wearing a bra feels good to you, thats fine, said Blake. If you feel that some support is needed, then maybe a bralette or a wire-free bra would be a happy medium at home. It all depends on what youre comfortable with. She also assured that wearing a bra or opting not to wouldnt impact breast-cancer risks so a little extra cleavage wont kill anyone.
