have you contributed more than you were before to justify an increase?

your employer is not your welfare agent. You get paid based on what you contribute. Inflation is an outside factor that has nothing to do with your employer.

maybe to make yourself more money you make yourself more productive to deserve more money cause you create more value in yourself.
I love when employers end up eating shit because they refuse to make sure their employees can survive. It occasionally happens. As am employer, you have an obligation to make sure your employees can survive. If you can't afford to pay your employees, you don't any business running... well, a business

A buddy of mine decided that he'd try his hand at having a pit bull when i was roommates with him. Lasted about 3 weeks before he gave him back to the old owners. Bastard was disgusting. Was pissing in my buddy's bed on a nearly daily basis and one time ate his own shit and vomited it back up in front of my bedroom door. Problem dogs can be really annoying. I will admit I thought him pissing in my buddy's bed was kinda funny though lol

I was pet free for quite a while but now I have 3 cats. Definitely prefer pet free life. I'm not the kind of person who gets super attached to pets. They don't add any kind of fulfillment to my life. I mean, I'll be sad when they die but I'm not the kind of guy who's gonna be emotionally wounded like some people are. Cleaning cat litter and cat vomit up gets old. Looking after myself and my daughter is plenty for me already lol

That's also at least partly because previous generations were much better at telling the difference between "necessity" and "stuff I want".
Disagree. That meme that millennials need to cancel their Netflix subscriptions and stop buying Starbucks and all their problems will go away is just a bad boomer meme. Saving any substantial amount of money with anything less than a 6 figure income is damn near impossible now unless you live with someone rent or mortgage free.

Hell, even if you manage to save 10-20k a year, which for most is completely unrealistic, you're looking at what... 200-400k max after 20 years. In 20 years, that probably won't buy you a house lol. And expecting to save that much every year on what would have to be a pretty solid salary is only really reasonable if life goes smoothly for those 20 years. Cutting out your netflix and Starbucks will maybe give you an extra 1000 a year if you buy Starbucks every single day. 1000 dollars doesn't get very far nowadays. Maybe it pays for an extra vacation and a little cushion for a month lol

Older generations need to just admit that everything costs way more now compared to what people are making. It's that simple

Men and women just have different dating problems. I'll take the problems men face dating any day of the week though. Women have to be on high alert for abusive/rapey weirdos. Men that aren't super attractive will have a harder time getting a date and generally feel more pressure to impress/woo their date

That doesn't, however, justify complaining about how "standards are being lowered," nor does it mean it's wrong to criticize the current standards for being unnecessarily restrictive and push for cultural shifts in favour of greater permissiveness.

However, it's also not inherently wrong if you want higher standards in dress associated with someone you're doing business with, especially important business. Unfortunately, you sometimes have to do business with people that you don't know well, if at all. If I have someone handling some business of mine and I don't know either one, I'm probably gonna pick the guy wearing a suit over the guy in shorts and a slipknot shirt

adjl posted...
Basically, there's a purpose in businesses following those arbitrary standards, since that's capitalizing on the culture that has established them. There's no purpose in the standards themselves, though, so eroding them to limit the number of people that are excluded from jobs for not being able to afford the right suit is a good thing.

It's only arbitrary to you and anyone who shares your mindset though. I would imagine that you have standards yourself as far as dressing yourself goes, but where you draw the line is simply different from where someone else does. I imagine you wouldn't attend someone's wedding in flip flops

adjl posted...
As much as a lot of "professional dress" standards are rooted in simple classism
Somewhat true, but it's also not hard to find low cost decent looking suits. Now, if you're actually in the running for the rare job that requires a 4000 dollar perfectly tailored suit to get in the door, I'd imagine you already have the money for it anyway

Which is not "this is a thing because there's an actual purpose behind it," it's "this is a thing because a lot of people want to think it's a thing." These are arbitrary standards that serve no purpose.
But it's still a thing. That's the point. You're basically just arguing against human culture. It is what it is until it isn't. There are enough people out there that want you to be well dressed to handle business that is important to them that it isn't unreasonable for employers to require it for certain positions

Which is generally a good thing. "You're not allowed to hold a professional job unless you can afford a suit" has always been ridiculous, elitist gatekeeping that serves no actual purpose.
Disagree. There are a lot of jobs where looking professional and wearing a suit shows customers that you're taking your job seriously. A lot of people don't want someone to handle... for example... their will or your divorce case while wearing cargo shorts
