For RAID 10, do all the drives have to be the same size?
it may depend on the RAID controller. when I started I was under the impression that all of the drives had to be the same model not just size, but that doesn't seem to be the case. reading, some sources say that even if they have different sizes, the smallest drive will determine the size of the volume.

something I'll point out is, it is a bit cumbersome to implement. you do actually end up with 4 drives and 4 power cables going to them, and 4 data cables, and if one of the 8 data cable ends comes lose you will lose a drive and have to figure out which port is which drive to fix it and then rebuild the RAID after. and annoyingly SATA cables don't attach very securely. (maybe modern ones are better than the ones I have.)

also, depending on the hardware you have, hard reboots will result in long rebuild operations. (supposedly one of the benefits of "hardware RAID controllers" is that they have batteries and prevent this issue. can use UPS instead to protect against power outages, but that's not the only kind of hard reboot.) (rebuild is basically 1-2 hours running in the background. your computer is slower for those 1-2 hours. for NAS maybe it wouldn't matter since it wouldn't be the PC you're using.)

RAID 10. need 4x drives, but theoretically get 2x performance and redundancy, and 2x 1 drive capacity. (4 1TB drives -> 2TB total storage.) can lose any 1 drive, and even a second drive if it's not the wrong one (the mirror of the first, 1/3 chance). (I personally have 2 machines with this and really is how I've had the same volume for 10 years now; I've replaced a drive twice in those 10 years I think.)

friend of mine likes RAID 5 the most. Can't remember exactly, but I think you need 3 drives or more. 1 drive is parity drive. get (n-1) capacity (4 1TB drives -> 3TB total). can lose any 1 drive. I think performance increases linearly based on number of drives, but apparently there is a large write penalty since it has to check parity before writing and then update parity after writing.

an overhyped, overrated game
it's not just overrated, it's actually bad

I'm not sure if most people notice, but the game has no AI and the entire world depends entirely on scripted events. enemy AI literally consists of: if out of range, path into range; when in range, stand still and shoot. that's like placeholder AI that you would write as you're developing the game before writing something more substantial later. (and this is supposed to be a pure FPS game...)

and then the utter tedium of fighting those tripod and helicopter things...

I think the only thing it had going for it at the time was a sense of realism that came from the high-res textures and atmospheric sounds and art style. it does sort of authentically feel like you're in the rural parts of an east european country.

oh and the "story telling"... just about every character in the game from the beginning to the end gushes over the main character which is the most revolting thing ever.

it's basically just a tech demo for the source engine which apparently focuses too much on scripting and not enough on actual gameplay.

No crackling when I use WMP or itunes to watch movies or listen to music.

What the fuck is going on? Wtf is it about sound from YT or games that makes it crackle but not sound from music or movies?
theoretically it would be which part of your computer it was passing through or how much is passing through.

but if youtube does it but playing a video file doesn't, that's definitely odd. I would guess that one of the two is hardware accelerated and the other isn't, or one is very high bandwidth and the other isn't. could also be that one is being played off a noisy drive and the other isn't. (though that would probably be the reverse of what you describe unless YT buffers video to the drive).

if games do it, then maybe it's hardware acceleration. (I know on mine that graphics and video playing both compete for graphical throughput and if I watch a video at 1080p60 my load times in games will be 10x longer and stuff will start failing to load into the game world.)

if it was me I would find a youtube video that did it and then download that video and try playing it off different drives, and I would try to find hw acceleration toggles in programs to see if that made a difference or not. also try switching between hi-res and low-res video.

(chrome hw accel. toggle is at Settings -> Advanced -> System. interestingly mine is off.)

Im wondering if its the GHz interference thingy, how come when I used my phone from the same location theres no crackling?
certain frequencies are reserved for certain things. cellular seems like it's using a wide variety of frequencies that are less than 2GHz (with the odd one being above 2GHz). bluetooth and WiFi are both specifically using 2.4GHz (which really means something like 2.40-2.48 GHz). I don't have any direct experience with them interfering, it's just what comes up when researching this.

it may also just be coming from your PC directly. I know I've used a lot of computers where you could hear mouse movement and hard drive activity in the sound system, for example.

(one thing I wonder is how bluetooth would pick up interference if it's a digital protocol. I don't know enough about the protocol to know one way or the other, but it could mean that the interference is only present at the analog level, which I guess would be in the earbuds/headphones themselves. but I don't know and have nothing to test.)

EM interference

sounds like bluetooth uses the same frequency as some WiFi (2.4GHz) and that can be the culprit (if you have one of those dual setups with both a 2.4GHz and 5GHz network and only use the 5GHz you could try disabling the 2.4 one.)

other things can be microwaves or fluorescent lights. maybe try moving the dongle if it's near something in particular with a large EM field around it like a powerbar/wall adapter or something.

it's only $15 for an insane amount of food (basically 2 days worth of food for 1 person unless you're reeeeeeeaaally hungry). it's basically "all you can eat" unless you're absolutely determined to eat until you pop.

I guess the advantage an actual buffet would have would be variety, where you could eat smaller amounts of more kinds of dishes.

My brain fell out

What I want. Ok, a roll of 1 doesn't count since it's an autofail. I want to take these data points: A 2 = 83% success, or 0.8333, 3 = 0.6666, 4=0.5, 5=0.3333 and 6=0.1666, since that's the normal pattern.... and make a formula so that I could figure out what would happen if you rolled a, say 4.1 or a 2.5 or whatever.
I think part of the problem is that the in-betweens are not defined. they could slope in all kinds of ways (possibly infinite ways).

it looks like there are sites that can do this for you. eg: mycurvefit.com

it seems like it's possible to do this linearly, and the resulting formula is y = (x - 1) / 6

I'm not sure if you have something backwards though saying that 1 = 0% chance of success but 2 = 83% chance of success. it makes more sense if 2 is an 83% chance of failure, and then 1 = 0 still fits linearly.

(1 - 1) / 6 = 0/6 = 0
(2 - 1) / 6 = 1/6 = 0.166...
(3 - 1) / 6 = 2/6 = 0.33...
(4 - 1) / 6 = 3/6 = 0.5
(5 - 1) / 6 = 4/6 = 0.66...
(6 - 1) / 6 = 5/6 = 0.833...

even if you have something slightly different in mind this is probably a good enough start that you could modify it as needed. the key thing here I think is that all of the %s are just x/6 values.

(unless you're looking for this in terms of S and T...?)

In the rules as written if your S is 4 and their T is 4 you hit at 50%, 4=4' But all ranges between 4.01 and 7.99 would ALSO be in the 3+ category.

I want to granularize it so that when you are at half you still need a 6, if you are equal it's still 50/50 (4+) and double it's still a 2+ (83%) with the 3+ and 5+ options being in there somewhere...
did you actually state what you're looking for here? you say "I want to granularize it so that... [everything is still the same]".
