You're giving money to a woman who will spend it on transphobia at a time in which trans genocide has become fashionable in the US and UK. There being no ethical consumption under capitalism doesn't give you carte blanche to not care, because some consumption is less ethical than others.

Also you're literally putting down a rebellion by the anti-Semitic tropes species, IIRC.

I would just like to say: women are great. I texted with one of my former classmates last night (the one who looks like Courtney Barnett) and we had a great chat about what our goals are (mine moreso than hers: shes already waist-deep in school work) and I told her about how rough my month has been: my parents being getting COVID and not being able to see my girlfriend and she commiserated and lamented she hasnt seen her boyfriend in a few weeks and is sad about it. And I ended by reminding her that the semester has just begun and it was important for her to sleep well. It was just such a positive, supportive dynamic.

Female friendship is so beautiful.
Anyway, have a great night everybody! Champions sleep well.

Serrano identifies gender identity as being innate and immutable, though it is neither entirely essential nor entirely constructed - it's both. But subconscious sex is immutable.

You're not tied to this. You were made for you and you should feel the way you want to feel ;) . Learn to take joy in it.

Now that I'm awake, have yet another song, this one NOVA ONE's lovable. Roz Raskin is the front-person, an enby who who once fronted a mediocre punk band (Roz and the Rice Cakes - my girlfriend has a shirt) now fronts something a lot better (ironically, my girlfriend introduced me to NOVA ONE without realizing the singer is the same person), all while adopting an exaggeratedly feminine guise. This is what I cited in my author's note, most specifically this section:

"I'm not tied to this
I was made for me
I'm not tied to this
And I know you see
I'm not tied to this
Won't you let us free
I'm not tied to this
I was made for me."
Considering they're non-binary and they sell t-shirts emblazoned with those lines (I'm not tied to this, I was made for me) it seems to be meant in a broad, liberatory sense. Thus it's actually thematically similar with Caroline Rose's "Feel The Way I Want", but I think there's unique power in Roz's soaring vocal performance.

Off the top of my head, I cited Susan Stryker, Katelyn Burns, Alejandra Caraballo, Jo Yurcaba, Florence Ashley, and, yes: Zinnia Jones. I hadnt read anything by Julia Serrano at the time and dearly wish I had.

I wanted to cite Roz Raskin as well, but left that for the authors note I attached for my girlfriend and therapist.

A more personal question: How do trans people view memories from before transition? Either your personal experience or others'.

Obviously trans people are always trans, but do you view yourself as you presented then? Or is there some kind of mental "correction"? Are there happy memories or do they all cause some level of distress?
Nah, pre-transition memories are mostly just foggy and muddy, if that makes sense: even happy ones. Its just unclear and muddled: which frustrates my deeply inquisitive girlfriend to no end.

Memories from after I started HRT are comparatively sharper, and not just because theyre relatively more recent. I simply became more present. If that makes sense.

Lastly, having to get up to pee is fucking heinous.

Some points before I start!

-I've fallen in love with a new non-binary musician, Caroline "Uncle Carol" Rose. Here, listen to some of their music!
Miami (from her new album, to be released in March): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mqVCCy2np0
Feel The Way I Want*: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3EwDk1zY6g This one's pretty funny, IMO.
Jeannie Becomes a Mom: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgAPnbMHRDo

I have Courtney Barnett's excellent "Here and There" playlist to thank: it highlights the artists who played at the series of music festivals she organized over this past summer, of which Caroline Rose was one another was Faye Webster.
*This is spiritually similar to NOVA ONE's song lovable.

-Why didn't anyone warn me that a woman chopping wood is the fucking hottest thing ever? Jesus help me ladies, if you put on some flannel, whip out an axe, and start splitting wood, I will be putty in your hands. My girlfriend made fun of me, because she is cruel.

-This month has occurred under the shadow of illness: both my parents came down with COVID, about a week apart, and though I somehow managed to avoid getting it, I'm still getting over the stress.

-The Buffalo Bills suffered horrifying trauma and were later gutted like fish by the Bengals at home. This is the fourth year in a row they've collapsed pathetically in the playoffs, so I'm kind of getting tired of it.

-I finished Julia Serrano's excellent book Whipping Girl earlier in the month and am currently working on a translation of Miyamoto Musashi's Gorin-no-sho (The Book of Five Rings).

Ask away! Please be respectful.

The bottom line:

People who are solidly cis will not be questioning their gender identity more than briefly in passing. They won't spend weeks and weeks trying to prove they're fine - if you're reached that point, you are at least non-binary if not transgender.

Also, a surprisingly simple question:

"If you could restart life, which gender would you pick?"
Julia Serrano explains it by saying our gender is determined by three aspects: your assigned sex, which is determined basically by whether or not you have a penis*; gender identity, which is how you yourself identify; and subconscious sex i.e. basically what your brain is. If all three factors align i.e. you have a penis, you identify as male, and your brain agrees, subconscious sex is basically invisible.

But me? I had a penis, I was pretty sure that made me a boy, I referred to myself that way and presented that way, but I couldn't banish the niggling doubt that I wasn't, nor did I ever quite fit in with the boys, no matter how hard I tried. I would dream about just waking up one day and magically being a girl.

*Ambiguous genitalia exists, which is typically when the doctor makes a snap decision as to whether you would make a better boy or girl and likely surgically "corrects" your genitalia.

This is the point where I get out of work and editorialize a little. A few points...

1) The hysteria over trans women competing in women's sports is so very obviously baseless, insofar as possibly the most successful trans woman athlete, Lia Thomas, placed first in 1 out of 3 of her events (the 500m freestyle). She placed 5th in the 200m freestyle and 8th in the 100m freestyle: both times finishing over two seconds behind 1st-place (both races were won by cis women). This was at the national collegiate level, so it's pretty high, but it's not even close to the highest level in women's swimming. Laurel Hubbard technically competed at a higher-level of competition, but did absolutely terribly - attributable in part to her relatively advanced age for weightlifting. Lia, of course, has subsequently been banned by FINA due to a sudden change in regulations regarding trans swimmers that just so happened to exclude the only prominent trans woman swimmer in the world and any other future trans competitor who doesn't transition before the age of 12 - a near impossibility in most of the world so that's as high a level as Lia will ever swim at. Past that, you're looking at MMA fighters like Fallon Fox and Alana McLaughlin (neither of whom fought anyone who wasn't a scrub) and former high school athletes like Terry Miller and Andraya Yearwood.

2) Being a trans woman myself, I am constantly amazed by how fantastically ignorant society at large is about us, about our experiences, and about the nuts and bolts of how hormones work (and thus how HRT works). Even most doctors are ignorant about it! This ignorance is rooted in the essentialization of gender, oppositional and traditional sexism, and, of course, the discounting of femininity in general.

3) Any appearance of issues could be easily dispelled by making transition care wildly available for minors and educating kids and society at large, as starting blockers up early enough would prevent trans women from developing these scary masculine traits that give them nebulous advantages that somehow has yet to produce a hyper-dominate athlete (as well as giving trans men a real shot at getting into the upper ends of the male height spectrum, rendering them far more likely to be competitive athletes themselves, not to mention affording the other undefinable advantages that cis men presumably have over them), but weirdly the same people who think trans people (yes, boxing effecitvely banned a trans man boxer by shunting him off into an "open" category...by himself lol.) should be blanket banned from sports also think that's child abuse or whatever. Weird how that works...

Glad this study proves that Lia Thomas went from a mediocre male swimmer to the best female swimmer in the country not because of genetics, but because of misogyny
That's a lie.

https://www.si.com/college/2022/03/03/lia-thomas-penn-swimmer-transgender-woman-daily-cover
Though Thomas had been an elite distance swimmer throughout high school and could have joined much more prominent swim programs, Penn was the only place she wanted to go. Her brother Wes swam for the Quakers for four years; as a teenager Thomas often traveled to Philadelphia to watch him. She liked Schnur, Penns longtime coach, and the two quickly developed a bond after Thomas arrived on campus late in the summer of 2017.
Thomas became quick friends with many of her new teammates, connecting over a mutual love of niche anime and video games and through the closeness that can be achieved only through taxing swim practices. The hours back and forth in the pool created a kinship, and the work paid off. During her freshman year on the mens team Thomas established several personal records. In her first Ivy League championships, in February 2018, she had top-eight finishes in the 500-yard freestyle, the 1,000-yard freestyle and the 1,650-yard freestyle.
Pretty impressive for a freshman. Of course, between her freshman and sophomore seasons, she started HRT, which very predictably tanked her ability to compete with men. She then again swam at an elite level in her last year of eligibility, this time in the women's division.

One study. OK.
It's actually a review of existing studies on the subject, so it's like many studies in a trench coat.

In any case, trans exclusionary policies have not been fact-based, so this unfortunately will not affect them, at least in the short-term.

A study on transgender women athletes in elite sport has found that if UCI rules are adhered to, there is currently no substantial evidence of any biological advantages for trans women competing in elite womens sport.
It found there was little evidence that biomedical factors related to male puberty such as lung size, bone density and hip-to-knee joint angle predict an unfair advantage. But some evidence that social factors like nutrition, training and access to equipment do.
These are just some of the key findings listed in an 86-page report titled Transgender Women Athletes and Elite Sport: A Scientific Review, which was commissioned by the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) and published in late 2022.
The inclusion of trans women in elite women's sport has been a hot button issue of late with high profile instances such as Emily Bridges' attempt to compete in the UK sparking concern and upset on all sides. While the inclusion of trans women has led to protests by those who worry that cis women (the term for women born anatomically female) are at a competitive disadvantage at some U.S. races.
However, the report concluded that "the fears that cis women need be protected from trans women in elite sport are unsubstantiated and misplaced.
"What threatens womens elite sport, for cis and trans women, is not trans women, but is rather misogyny in the form of underfunding, non-parity in participation and leadership, inequitable sport space allocation/access, and a range of sporting opportunities not afforded to women (cis women and trans women) in equitable ways."
The report is an in-depth review of all scientific literature published between 2011 and the end of 2021 in English, regarding transgender women and their participation in elite sport.
Relying only on peer-reviewed articles or syntheses of academic literature in reputable academic journals, the study explores both the biomedical and sociocultural perspectives when it comes to the question of trans inclusion in sports.

The Testosterone Advantage

The biomedical perspective is the primary consideration of sports governing bodies around the globe and commonly the center of the fairness debate. Many trans athlete inclusion policies, the UCIs included, look to testosterone level boundaries and medicalized interventions such as the suppression of testosterone and supplementation of estrogen to level the playing field (for more detail see below).
After reviewing the scientific literature of the past decade, however, the report finds that not only are these boundaries arbitrary, the studies are flawed and inconclusive.
The review points to shortcomings such as using non-athletic trans women as subjects; inadequately adjusting data for factors such as height or weight; little understanding of the (disadvantageous) effects of hormone therapy; not differentiating between performance-enhancing doping and naturally occurring serum testosterone; or the little attention given to the fact that distribution of testosterone levels between elite cisgender men and elite cisgender women athletes overlaps.
The study was unable to find support for the argument that testosterone exposure and the biomedical factors related to male puberty such as lung size, bone density and hip-to-knee joint angle lead to athletic advantages.
There is not one discrete biomarker that allows easy comparison of athletes bodies to each other in terms of performance, the study concludes.
[Athletes] are a sum of all their advantages and disadvantages, which results in performance.
While sport-specific studies on performance advantages are lacking, the review did find evidence to indicate that trans women who have undergone testosterone suppression have no clear biological advantages over cis women in elite sport, stating:
While an advantage in terms of Lean Body Mass (LBM), Cross Section Area (CSA - a measure of muscle mass) and strength may persist statistically after 12 months, there is no evidence that this translates to any performance advantage as compared to elite cis-women athletes of similar size and height. The loss in LBM, CSA and strength continues after the initial 12-month suppression and, as of today, no significance studies indicate at what rate or how long this loss continues.
Additionally, the higher levels of red blood cell count experienced by cis men normalize within four months of starting testosterone suppression. And, whats more, those opting for gonad removal, often experienced testosterone levels far below that of pre-menopausal cis women.

The Social Scientific Disadvantages

In developing sporting policies, the social scientific studies have largely been ignored, the report states, yet its the social factors that have a far greater impact on athletic performance than testosterone.
Only certain biomedical factors are policed under a mandate of fairness in elite sport, despite strong evidence that financial material resources (such as access to infrastructure and equipment, nutrition, time to train, higher salaries) are associated with advantage in sport, it reads.
The authors of the review argue that when it comes to questions of 'fairness' in sport, the considerations of discrimination and access are important.
Non-inclusive sporting environments mean that trans women are significantly underrepresented in elite sports. From exclusion policies to changing room access and personal safety, trans-discrimination has a direct impact on a trans woman's access to sport, let alone her performance.
Additionally, there are everyday sociopolitical factors to contend with such as transphobia and marginalization in vital areas such as housing, health care, work and public spaces.
The report found strong evidence that elite sport policy is made within transmisogynist, misogynoir, racist, geopolitical cultural norms.
Norms, which the report states, are the continuation of a long history of exclusion of women from competitive sport, especially those women whose bodies were deemed to not conform to normative standards of femininity.

What the Cycling Rules Say

The UCI's policy on eligibility and regulations for transgender athletes, state that those who transition from male to female (MTF) are eligible to compete in the female category as long as:
- the athlete has declared their gender identity as female,
- the athlete can demonstrate that their total testosterone level in serum has been below 2.5 nmol/L for a period of at least 24 months,
- and their total testosterone level in serum must remain below 2.5 nmol/L throughout the period of desired eligibility to compete in the female category.
Not all cycling nations have adopted this policy, which has led to conflict and confusion for elite trans athletes. British Cycling even went so far as backtrack on its own inclusion policy to block new trans riders from competing until it has reviewed and decided on a new licensing policy due this spring.
USA Cycling has adopted the UCI standard and as such, trans women are allowed to compete at all levels as long as the above qualifications are met.

I'm sure the fact this study analyzes sociological factors alongside biomedical factors is going to rustle some jimmies lol.

You don't have any friends you can talk to?
I spent basically an entire year learning how to love myself and embrace being her before I happened to send a particularly fateful Hinge message.

In any case, that's really not how it works. Having a healthy romantic relationship is good for you, don't get me wrong, but the key word there is "healthy". I'm not completely reliant on my girlfriend for social intimacy. which is extra good because she's a bad texter.

Russia has definitely firmed up its line since making the (strategically sound) decision to abandon Kherson, thanks in part to its mobilization efforts, but has failed to make much progress, even in the area around Bahkmut, where it has been on the offensive for a long while. Of course, the best the Russians can hope for is a long, grinding war that they might eventually win, but Ukraine is beginning to receive and train on Western tanks (Challengers from the UK, Leopard IIs from Germany, and Abrams from the US) which could help it tip the scales, and long-term Russia is going to have a harder time procuring materials as long as NATO powers are willing to arm Ukraine (it doesn't seem as though enthusiasm is waning - quite the contrary).

Of course, I suspect that things would get ugly if Ukraine ever managed to retake and control significant parts of Luhansk, Donetsk, and/or Crimea...

I always did want to have kids, but I basically never had myself together until last year. I'm very poor and having kids in this day and age is obscenely expensive. I could still have kids - being a trans lesbian and all - but I don't really want to anymore. Fell for a wonderful but chronically ill lady with a daughter, so I'll probably just mom her.
