Altering my hormonal balance tanked my tolerance even faster than I expected! It was...an adjustment, as I'm sure you know.

But yeah, between that and being 35, I can't just drink without thinking about it.

TC, my advice would be to just take it slow and stop earlier than you're used to.

Topic2022 is at end. What were your favorite music releases of the year?
ElatedVenusaur

This was a slow year for the small number of musicians I actively follow: Faye Webster released a mini-EP called Car Therapy Sessions that was mostly remixes: the catch is that she performed backed by an orchestra, a significant departure from her usual folkish country style. Though she is in many ways still unrefined as an artist, she has undeniable talent and a dorky charm, and hopefully her experimental nature will cure her bad habit: excessive repetition. Perhaps being a part of Courtney Barnett's orbit will also be helpful.

Bjork released a full-blown album, Fossora, replete with mycellic theming and a pair of songs dedicated to her late mother: Ancestress and Sorrowful Soil. I am very fond of the album's bassy opener (Atopos), personally. It's eclectic, varied, and brilliant, as she usually is, but something about it hit harder than her prior few albums.

  • Getting to know my girlfriend even better
  • Charting my path out of retail, either via a MSW program or enrolling in a class to get hired in a lower-level position
  • Getting my facial hair lasered off finally (hopefully)
  • Getting to wear earrings
  • Improving my makeup skills
  • Continuing the process of my legal name change so my new license will have the appropriate name and gender marker (not to mention a much more accurate picture)
  • Continuing to develop my wardrobe and unique fashion sense
  • Continuing the endless labor of voice training
  • Reading lots of books, especially books from feminist and/or trans perspectives
  • Solidifying my relationship with my three classmates and my work bestie into free-standing friendships.

Personally, I do think Greta's insult is problematic, but I think we should hold a 36-year old man to much higher standards than a 19-year old woman who is being sexually harassed by aforementioned degenerate. Focusing on why Greta' response may not be ideal only serves to obfuscate the much greater problem of male sexual violence and entitlement.

I said that I would live alone, but now that I'm thinking about it, that's not the plan at all. Me and the girlfriend have already agreed that we want to get married some day and build a life together, but we're both practical, grounded people, so we understand it'll take time to get there. It would be the three of us: me, her, and her daughter (who is currently a tween).

What was your GOTY this year?
I played hardly anything new this year, to be honest. I blew most of my disposable income between a new mattress and taking a MSW course as a non-matriculating student (a cool $2,200+ out-of-pocket). Then there was the need to continuously buy myself fancy tea, getting a basic makeup set-up going, completely revamping my wardrobe, books, etc. etc.

Oh, and a little jewelry, of course. I still don't have enough jewelry, though I am pretty set on earrings ATM. Not that I can even wear them yet: my body seems over-eager to heal my ear holes shut even two months in, so the studs are staying in for the time being.

And unlike those male ******-chasers who say they like T-girls because we are supposedly the best of both worlds, I am attracted to trans women because we are all woman! My femaleness is so intense that it has overpowered the trillions of lame-ass Y chromosomes that sheepishly hide inside the cells of my body. And my femininity is so relentless that it survived thirty years of male socialization and twenty years of testosterone poisoning. Some kinky-identified thrill-seekers may envision trans women as androgyne fuck fantasies, but thats only because they are too self-absorbed to appreciate how completely fucking female we are.

Then I replied it is almost always their (trans womens) eyes. When I look into them, I see both endless strength and inconsolable sadness. I see someone who has overcome humiliation and abuses that would flatten the average person. I see a woman who was made to feel shame for her desires and yet had the courage to pursue them anyway. I see a woman who was forced against her will into boyhood, who held onto a dream that everybody in her life desperately tried to beat out of her, who refused to listen to the endless stream of people who told her that who she was and what she wanted was impossible.

When I look into a trans womans eyes, I see a profound appreciation for how fucking empowering it can be to be female, an appreciation that seems lost on many cis women who sadly take their female identities and anatomies for granted, or who perpetually seek to cast themselves as victims instead of instigators. I see a wisdom that can only come from having to fight for your right to be recognized as female, a raw strength that only comes from unabashedly asserting your right to be feminine in an inhospitable world. In a trans womans eyes, I see someone who understands that, in a culture seemingly fueled on male homophobic hysteria, choosing to be female and openly expressing ones femininity is not a sign of frivolousness, weakness, or passivity, it is a fucking badge of courage. Everybody loves to say drag queens are fabulous, but nobody seems to get the fact that trans women are fucking badass!
-Julia Serrano

Just sharing one of the most genuinely empowering things I have ever read. Tearing up right now. Good night.

If you want a lesson, trans people, especially trans women, are regularly assumed to be engaged in deception when they present themselves as their identified gender to the world. Society expects trans people to effectively wear a flashing neon sign that reads "I AM TRANS", because blaming trans people is easier than examining why society believes others have the right to know about some one's past, some one's experiences, why they have the right to demand others to conform to their own expectations, even if the other person is a perfect stranger.

But I am a woman, so how can it be deceptive of me to present myself that way?

If you want the same lesson, except much better, read Whipping Girl.

I'm reading Whipping Girl right now, Julia Serrano's seminal text on transmisogyny and the negative way society sees femininity (basically as a lack of certain qualities). But before then, Lilu was a type of desert demon borrowed from the Sumerians and Babylonians who took the form of an unclean shrieking bird and killed newborns. It's sort of crazy how much ancient Judaism took from their neighbors and added their own spin to it.
I mean, Babylon had one of the world's largest Jewish community for centuries. They were probably the last people to live there, even.

Unfortunately, finding out that the US is, in fact, a brutal imperialistic power that ruthlessly enforces its will globally via its unmatched soft and hard power is instead of a kindly policeman LOL is very traumatic.

And some people draw the conclusion that those who oppose US interests must necessarily be better, and wind up carrying water for Russian, Chinese, etc. imperialism despite paying lip service to national sovereignty when the US does something like this. I, personally, think US policy has helped to create this situation, where Russia is a kleptocratic basket case desperately clinging to a glorious imperial past, and of course there are avowed Nazis fighting for the Ukrainians, but that doesn't change the fact that it was Russia who decided to do this, Russia that levels city blocks, Russia that has chosen that Ukraine does not deserve to exist as anything but their subject, Russia which is engaging in genocidal violence against civilians.

And, of course, Russia is also rife with Nazis of its own.

And also that imperialism is bad, regardless of whose it is.

I'm afraid to ask this question on so many levels, but I've wanted to ask this every time I've seen an "ask a trans girl anything" topic. I'm not trying to delve into your personal life, so I want to ask this as a general question of etiquette.

Let's say that a father has two cisgendered children and a transgendered child -- all of whom are grown adults. Papa keeps childhood photos of his three offspring on display in the hallway of his house, including a pre-transition photo of his trans daughter. Would you consider this to be uncouth -- like deadnaming someone -- or is it natural for a parent to want to display photos of their children from all stages of life? Let's say for the sake of argument that the daughter makes no attempt to hide or advertise the fact that she's trans. If people know, they know. If they don't, they don't. Her friends, her lover, and the family members that matter all know and accept it.
I don't think I get it. If she would prefer the photo not be displayed, it shouldn't. If it's not a big deal, it's not a big deal.

My girlfriend saw a photo of me pre-transition once and responded, "I don't even know who that person is, 'cause it's certainly not you."

Are your nails currently painted, and if so, what color?
I wish they were, but it's against Whole Foods dress code for employees working in food prep areas to paint their nails. It isn't always enforced, but I'm a trans woman, so I kind of assume they would enforce it against me.

Anyway, good night. I like Pillars of Eternity, but I must say that the difficulty curve is all kinds of weird.
