time to return to old movies for the next 6+ months

letterboxd has plenty of good writing on it. you just need to know who to follow (i basically just followed everyone i follow on film twitter).

finding people who are good with particular niches is helpful and not that hard if you search for the right movies.

i think gaspar noe has plenty of style. its just in service to shitty ideas. its all very mean spirited which is not my speed. which is different from bleak which i can deal with (come and see, threads, the piano teacher, etc)

gaspar noe is one of the worst filmmakers currently working, yes. irreversible, enter the void, and climax are pretty but ultimately grotesque, stupid, and hateful movies!

i am generally anti blocking people on social media but my new letterboxd initiative is to block anyone with annoying popular reviews

i just find inarritu to be insanely pretentious. deadly serious stuff is really a drag to me. doing long and crazy takes for virtuosity's sake instead of artistic. like he does realize that editing is an incredibly powerful cinematic tool, right? i dunno man. i dunno. not for me.

This is my first time posting the awards on CE - I will likely post them on the theater board as well - but for the uninitiated, the Quality Cinema Warrior Society was created in protest against people who can only enjoy movies through the prism of intellectual properties. Also because everyone on that board complained about SJWs and I thought it would be funny to call ourselves the QCWs to be extra annoying. We eventually left the board for our own Discord which you can have an invite to if you are a like-minded individual looking for more intellectual cinematic discussion. Shoot me a DM!

Anyway, each year we do a ranked vote for five films in every category except for Best Picture which has ten slots. Winners are then announced (there is no voting round like the Oscars or other shows do). Any film released in the United States is eligible although some exceptions include movies that only played in NYC/LA for a week in 2021 to qualify for the Oscars. Films such as Petite Maman are therefore eligible for 2022 despite technically being a 2021 film. Others to qualify include Official Competition, Memoria, Hit the Road, and Benediction. Return to Seoul however is not eligible.

I will be posting a roundup of where you can stream each nominee and winner at the end of the show. Lots of good movies to check out that you haven't seen or maybe even heard of, probably.

This poll is very English-language and European cinema-centred. I tried to make a list of my favourite films by country, to be fair, including Egypt, India, Brazil and Portugal, where I live, because it is the country of Joo Csar Monteiro, Manoel de Oliveira, Paulo Rocha, Pedro Costa, Teresa Villaverde, Rita Azevedo Gomes, Miguel Gomes and Joo Pedro Rodrigues. But my list was too long, of course ,so I decided to be as stupid as this poll is and to put only French-language films that are very important to me.

One of my few certainties is that cinema contains far too many beautiful movies, which is why Ive long practised a cinephilia of gluttony and believe film critics should operate as bridge-builders rather than gatekeepers. Film canons have their problems, but they are useful as benchmarks against historical amnesia and as objects to be constantly questioned, two ideas which are far from mutually exclusive, as one needs to seriously engage with history in order to put it in crisis.

If there was some guiding principle when I picked these ten films, it was limiting myself to 20th-century movies, not because the past 20 years lack great movies far from it: I could easily put together a worth list made only from work by Pedro Costa, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Claire Denis, Hong Sangsoo, James Gray, Rita Azevedo Gomes, Apichatpong Weerasethakul or Emmanuel Mouret ,as well as veteran filmmakers who still keep contributing essential vital movies such as Marco Bellocchio, Philippe Garrel, Frederick Wiseman, Paul Vecchiali or the late Manoel de Oliveira, Agns Varda, Ral Ruiz, Jonas Mekas or Chantal Akerman.

But the movie industry, in its more populist but also smaller-scale incarnations, seems determined to find ways to exclude the past, its commitment to the big, intoxicating now more perversely disconnected than ever from what came before; so I decided to curate a list that shut up shop in the 1990s, with great apologies to all the wonderful movies made since. Cinema is far too vast anyway and every list, personal or collective, will have to reckon with how much richer it is than any list of ten, a hundred, even a thousand films.

i've been clicking around these all days and i'm noticing a trend of filmmakers picking more older films than critics. the millennial film critics really only have space for citizen kane, a hitchcock, meshes of the afternoon, or singin in the rain as far as pre 1960 american film goes. really bizarre. have younger people, who are ostensibly cinephiles, really ditched classic hollywood that hard?

the only overlap between directors and critics in their 20s-40s seems to be world cinema of the 60s and then new hollywood of the 70s. sometimes the top 10 lynch/wkw/denis match up as well.

seems like the canon could become post-1960 in the next couple decades which aligns with my prediction that cinema will fully become a retrospective medium when the boomer filmmakers are dead.
